The Grumpy Old Women - Newcastle

Event Date: 21/11/2014, 08:00 pm

Based on the Hit UK TV Comedy!
Back to knock some sense back into the nation, THE GRUMPY OLD WOMEN return with their brand spanking new show FIFTY SHADES OF BIEGE!

These outrageous women will be entertaining audiences in Warrnambool, Wendouree, Warragul, Latrobe, Shepperton, Sydney, Cessnock, Taree, Tamworth, Newcastle and Port Macquarie from 10 to 23 November.

This jam-packed show comes from the original authors, Jenny Éclair and Judith Holder. It includes all the most Grumpy topics... learning the art of 'Grumpy Grooming', the joy of large pants, a free nagging master class (how to get your own way without him even noticing), beards for women, which style will suit you?

Complimentary Anger Management workshop, middle-aged drinking: the rules, navigating the smorgasbord of worry, voluntary euthanasia vs. retirement, how to customise an unwanted pole dancing kit and a mercifully brief Zumba demonstration. All this and more!

Inspired by the ratings-busting BBC Two series and best-selling Grumpy old Women handbook, Grumpy Old Women Live, is a celebration of the pre-, peri- and post-menopausal female condition. Three live and rather furious females take to the stage for an orgy of middle aged mayhem, with not a thong in sight. Don't forget your bifocals.

Come and bask in an orgy of fury and big laughs in this glorious live version of the hit TV show.

Beyond Desire

Event Date: 21/11/2014, 07:30 pm

A Modern Edwardian Musical of Murder and Mystery
Loosely based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet and E.M Foster’s novel Maurice, the World Premiere of Beyond Desire is playing at Hayes Theatre Co from Friday, 21 November to Saturday 13 December 2014.

The year is 1910. Anthony, having recently graduated from university, is touring Italy when he receives a telegram from his mother. Anthony returns to England to find that his father has been discovered dead in a hotel in London. Suspecting a deeper motive than that uncovered by the police, Anthony, with the help of his college friend James, begins to unravel the mystery behind the death; a discovery which embroils the whole family and household in a riveting story of passion, jealousy, love and deception.

Beyond Desire will be directed by British director Neil Rutherford and will star some of Australia’s leading musical theatre artists. Blake Bowden South Pacific, Mario, David Bulters Much Ado About Nothing, South Pacific, Tony Cogin Billy Elliott, Dr Zhivago, Chloe Dallimore The Producers, The Addams Family, Ross Hannaford King Kong, A Chorus Line, Nancye Hayes Sweeney Todd, Chicago, Annie, one of Australian musical theatre's true triple threats, Phillip Lowe Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Mary Poppins and Christy Sullivan Spring Awakening, The Mousetrap.

“I’m so thrilled to present the World Premiere of Beyond Desire in Australia at Hayes Theatre Co,” said Mr Rutherford. “I feel content that all the right elements have aligned together; the most perfectly brilliant cast, an exciting new venue and a piece which finds itself having delicately matured over the years following several workshops and readings. There is absolutely a place for every style of musical for today’s audiences, but Kieran and I have specifically written Beyond Desire, our third musical together, to be the antithesis of the high octane, large scale International musicals. We hope that the sensitive intimacy and ensemble nature of Beyond Desire will enthrall and excite audiences.

DIRTY DANCING

Event Date: 30/11/2014, 06:00 pm

The Classic Story on Stage
Leading Australian theatre producer John Frost today announced the international hit musical Dirty Dancing would return to Australia late in 2014, a decade after its World Premiere in Sydney.

“Dirty Dancing has been an amazing worldwide success,” said Frost. “The 1987 film was a massive hit, and the original movie soundtrack contains some of the most loved songs of all time. The stage musical gave audiences the chance to hear these songs performed live and to experience the breathtaking dance routines. People flocked to it, breaking records all around the world. The UK Observer called Dirty Dancing ‘The biggest live theatre sensation of all time’. Now, ten years after the World Premiere in Sydney, it returns home to where the magic began, and audiences can again have the Time Of Their Lives.”

“Dirty Dancing is one of our most beloved and timeless properties,” said Lionsgate Television COO Sandra Stern. “Its magic has enchanted audiences on film, television, DVD and digital platforms alike, and it remains a perennial best-seller in our film and television library. We’re delighted to participate in the latest stage incarnation that will introduce Dirty Dancing to a whole new generation of fans, and we expect the stage play to prove yet again that nobody puts Baby in a corner.”

Dirty Dancing was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Sydney in November 2004. Following the Sydney World Premiere season, the production toured to Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Auckland, a sell-out season of 18 months throughout Australia and New Zealand. A new production opened at the Theater Neue Flora in Hamburg, Germany in March 2006 where it broke records for achieving the largest advance in European theatre history.

An Evening With The Viennese Titans

Event Date: 22/11/2014, 07:30 pm

‘HIP’ NEW ORCHESTRA ARCS CLASSICAL TO ROMANTIC GREATS
An Evening with the Viennese Titans on Saturday 22 November in Sydney Grammar School’s magnificent New Hall, features works by Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert – all played on authentic period instruments in faithful performance style.

Conductor is Sydney-born-and-bred – now Berlin-based - Benjamin Bayl, who has led orchestras and opera companies across Europe and Asia. Soloist and principal flutist is stellar international Perth musician, Georgia Browne, who currently resides in London. Consistent with the ethos of the group, she will play an authentic wooden ‘classical flute’.

Through the combination of historical integrity and quality of musical performance, the ensemble is leading the rediscovery of the Classical and Romantic repertoire with the beauty and clarity unique to a full period instrument orchestra. Historically Informed Performance, or HIP, is central to the orchestra’s raison d’etre: all instruments are either 18th century originals or replicas thereof.

An Evening with the Viennese Titans is the group’s latest bold step forward – a must-see!

Two one act plays about a couple of Sydney's unique and iconic storytellers.
THE LES ROBINSON STORY is a one-man, comedy-drama that tells the story of the idiosyncratic Sydney writer and freelance journalist Les Robinson, an eccentric figure on Sydney's bohemian scene between the 1920s and 1960s, whose unconventional ways gained him much local notoriety. Based on Fremd’s experiences of living and working in and around the Cross in the 1990s, BELLE OF THE CROSS features a connoisseur of the pavement, stained with life's residue - blood, dirt, rubbish, condoms and bird shit.

The winters get colder while Belle waits for the thief who stole her money, and with it her life, to be caught.

THE LES ROBINSON STORY & BELLE OF THE CROSS
Written by Kieran Carroll and Angelika Fremd
Directed by Ron Hadley and David Ritchie
Featuring Martin Portus, Matt Thomson, Gertraud Ingeborg and Colleen Cook
