The Tin Ring: A Performance By Artist Jane...

A play based on a Holocaust survivor’s memoir.
The Tin Ring is a dramatisation of Holocaust survival based on a written autobiographical account by Zdenka Fantlová originated and adapted for performance by Arnfield and international theatre director Mike Alfreds in 2011.

Funded by Arts Council England it was premiered at The Lowry Salford and has performed nationally and internationally since 2011 in both the research phase of a thirty minute performance to the full phase of sixty eight minutes from Speakers House Westminster to Summerhall Edinburgh Fringe August 2013 selected as part of the British Council International Showcase. Performances delivered to date are approaching one hundred and growing.

The underlying research is concerned with witness testimonies as an interpretive tool, and developed within a performance context in order to reflect upon the life experience of victims and perpetrators of crisis.

The Tin Ring developed from a reflective process which sought to better understand the process and efficacy of verbatim testimony as an efficacious route towards improved understanding of the causes and consequences of genocide and mass violence. The methods undertaken to mediate this testimonial of survival included identifying its distinctiveness through text excavation and transposing these testimonials into a live theatrical setting, reshaping the original encounter through different phases; detailing how first-hand testimony can be transferred from the host (Fantlova) to the first surrogate (the performer Arnfield) and transmitted onto the group surrogate (the audience).

Star of stage and screen, Justine Clarke, sings through her favourite jazz repertoire, backed by a stellar Sydney rhythm section.

Justine Clarke has been singing jazz with some of Sydney’s finest musicians for many years. She started singing with The Starfish Club back in 1997 on a recommendation from Vince Jones and she has continued to explore the genre of jazz and swing, her style and sound taking you back in time; performing her own cabaret shows, singing with Tom Burlinson and his big band and continuing to guest appear at The Starfish Club when she gets the opportunity.

She’s looking forward to performing at Foundry616 - it’ll be a rare appearance in another very busy year on screen and stage for this performer. Prepare to swoon as this consummate performer enchants with her sweet voice and playful charm.

Award winning jazz double bassist Brendan Clarke has recently released his debut album as leader Stretch featuring the iconic Andrew Gander on drums, guitarist Carl Dewhurst and Murray Jackson on alto saxophone. (Special guest pianist Matt McMahon will replace Dewhurst for the launch).

Stretch features six original compositions, which represent somehighlights of Clarke’s writing from the past 20 years as well as threejazz standards including “Lazy Afternoon”, inspired by the late great Sydney jazz singer Joe Lane’s rendition.

Clarke has been at the forefront of Australian jazz for over 15 yearsand has accompanied such international luminaries as Chris Potter, Maria Schneider, Jim McNeely, John Riley and Kirk Lightsey. He was a member of Bernie McGann’s last quartet and has been aseminal member of a number of Australian jazz ensembles includingthe Dale Barlow Band, Bobby Gebert Trio, John Harkins Trio, RogerManins’ Hip Flask, Don Rader Quintet, Warwick Alder Quintet andThe Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra.

Jackson Harrison is an award-winning jazz pianist and composer.
