Tina Harrod

Event Date: 20/12/2013, 08:30 pm

Sydney jazz vocalist and songwriter
Sydney jazz vocalist and songwriter Tina Harrod is well known for her unique style and stage presence - and with the release of a third exciting album as well as headlining the Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival recently at Foundry616, the dynamic singer continues to push boundaries and blaze a path of her own.

Her acclaimed album of jazz infused covers Worksongs (2008), then the visceral and cathartic album of originals Temporary People (2010) rightly saw Harrod recognized as one of Australia’s finest singers. Now with The Revolution is Eternal Tina Harrod once again explores new territory with an album of original songs co-written with bassist/composer Jonathan Zwartz and the great LA based pianist and Hammond organ player Larry Goldings, and produced by award winning composer and piano player Stu Hunter.

‘Harrod pours herself, every inch, sinew and synapse, into the songs…she gives you goosebumps.’ John Shand, SMH

Ben Panucci Trio

Event Date: 19/12/2013, 08:30 pm

Short Stories Tour
"Ben Panucci is an entirely uncommon player, with a sound and vision entirely of its own logical and aesthetic world". John Hardaker

Guitarist and composer Ben Panucci is a key figure in a surprise contemporary movement of young musicians who go backwards, forwards and sideways throughout the jazz tradition... Ben Panucci's trio - with bassist Allex Boneham and drummer James Waples - combines several aspects of what they do, in an intimate setting. They can sound a bit like the Hot Club Of france, with that lightly stomping beat, then they can move into somewhat Debussyesque atmospherics and equally atmospheric free improvisation. Their playing in all idioms has a magic combination of authenticity and individuality. Entertainment values are high and so is sheer musicality. Spirit is the word.

Panucci is a wonderful guitarist who can play fluent, clean modern jazz lines and also reach back into the colouristic, richly chorded effects of the earliest electric guitiarists (some of who were jazz players). He can remind you of one or other of the guitarists who played in Nat King Cole's early trios and quartets. With all that his own personality is instantly recognizable. panucci and his trio are a delight. - John Clare

Ben Panucci (guitar) Alex Boneham (bass) James Waples (drums)

aka Sean Coffin Trio
With the classic tradition of tenor sax/bass/drums in mind and a thundering step into the future INTRIONSIC has emerged as the new group from 'Tenor Magus' Sean Coffin (Coffin Brothers, Wield and Sean Coffin Sextet).
As a band this is a relatively new project and all original compositions from Sean. However, the collective performance experience over many years in countries all over the world, the organic intensity the controlled calm on stage and unique thought provoking compositions make it worth getting to Foundry 616 for this gig.

Sean Coffin is a formidable saxophonist, renowned on the Sydney jazz and music scene for over 20 years, performing mostly with his original groups the Coffin Brothers (20 years), Medicinal Purpose, SCQUINT, Eff Sharp and The Theory of Nostrils and the Sean Coffin Trio while also being a highly influential jazz educator.

While living and studying in Boston and New York for 10 years, he worked with many influential artists, including George Garzone, Joe Viola and Bob Mintzer, setting the foundation for his dynamically powerful improvising and compositional style which will be on display at Foundry616 in the exciting trio format.

This will be a swinging and grooving ride through the original compositions of Sean, one of our most dedicated saxophonist/composers and educators.

Sean Coffin - Tenor & Soprano Saxophones/Compositions

Karl Dunnicliff - Double Bass

Nic Cecire - drums

Event Date: 15/12/2013, 10:00 am

200 years of American Art
America: painting a nation
8 NOVEMBER 2013 – 9 FEBRUARY 2014

Part of the Sydney International Arts Series, this is the most expansive historical survey of American painting ever presented in Australia.
With over 85 works, ranging from 1750 to 1967,
the exhibition covers more than 200 years of American art, history and experience.

America: painting a nation includes artists such as Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, James McNeill Whistler, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and John Singer Sargent.

The works have come from four major institutions in the USA: the Terra Foundation, Chicago; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has lent its major work, Edward Hopper’s House at dusk 1935. Most of the works have never been seen in Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales is the only Australian venue for this exhibition.
