On The Shore Of The Wide World

Event Date: 09/01/2014, 07:00 pm

Pantsguys Productions & Griffin Independent present a play by Simon Stephens
Alex Holmes is ready for adulthood, ready to lose his virginity and ready to leave his home town. But history isn’t on his side. Alex’s parents are careening towards infidelity, and his grandparents’ relationship continues to splinter. The sting of regret is turning out to be a Holmes family keepsake.

On the Shore of the Wide World is a sprawling and contemporary family saga about what we inherit and what we leave behind, spanning nine months, three generations and a life’s worth of missed opportunities.

After their 2012 Sydney Theatre Awards success (Best Independent Production, Best Independent Director, Punk Rock), pantsguys team up once again with director Anthony Skuse to rekindle their love affair with Simon Stephens.

Surviving A Zombie Apocalypse

Event Date: 06/01/2014, 09:00 am

Adventure Trail
Looking for something to do during the school holidays? Something a little out of the ordinary?

The Museum of Human Disease is Australia's only publicly accessible medical disease museum - which means this is the only place to come face to face with the deadliest killers in Australia.

We can also teach you how to avoid many of them - including the coming Zombie Apocalypse* (also werewolves*, SARS, influenza, Bird and Swine flu).

Keep your eyes peeled for daily "special activities" including how to wrap a bandage, brain making, zombie disguise make-up, lectures from Zombie "experts", experiments and classes. You could also watch a "virtual autopsy" or build your own "Super Bug" zombie disease.

* Zombies, Zombie Apocalypses and werewolves may not be real, but the science, and fun you will have, are very real.

Running from January 6th to the 24th 2014.
Open Monday to Friday from 9am till 5pm.
Also open Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th of January 9am till 5pm.

Adult's only Zombie movie night and expert talk on Saturday the 18th of January... check website for more details.

NOTE:
Double-passes can be used from 9am to 5pm.

Short Sweet And Cabaret

Event Date: 08/01/2014, 07:30 pm

Short+Sweet Cabaret takes place at the New Theatre, Newtown from 8-19 January
Short+Sweet Cabaret takes place at the New Theatre, Newtown from 8-19 January Wed-Saturday 7.30pm with a 2pm Sat matinee. Plus the ‘Wildcards’ shows Sun 12 Jan at 2pm and 7.30pm.
The gala final will play on Sun 19th at both 2pm and 7.30pm.

Kate Gaul is festival director and says merging theatre and music cabaret creates an atmosphere of exploration, energy, politics, stories, character, sex, songs and silliness.

“The festival will test new ideas, take risks and allow audience and performer to share intimate, unique experiences.

"We have been inundated with artists wanting to perform a 10-minute cabaret: music, comedy, burlesque... and some work that is simply undefinable!”

On display is the work of both seasoned professionals and talented newcomers. Big names include burlesque ‘names’ Marlena Rosenthal and Liz Lea as well as opera stars Kannen Breen and Jacqui Dark with their outrageous duo act “Strange Bedfellows (“a raunch-laden remix of favourites that explodes the boundaries of good taste with a hydrogen F-bomb”). Plus bizarre drag porn satire in “Candy Chambers: Hot and Wet”

Other characters and themes include a send-up of sporting WAGS (wives and girlfriends), a hilarious tale of one artist’s lifelong rivalry with Nicole Kidman, dating, an Indian wedding singer, confessions of Cruella de Vil’s playboy son, a western saloon burlesque, an amazing biography set in colonial Ceylon, four competing sperm, inner city housesharing, Marlena Dietrich, a gay virgin, nutty people, a bizarre lunar landing, a helpful usher, and a shocking ‘date with Dali’. There’s even a cabaret where the content is decided by the audience pulling songs out of a hat!

The cabaret festival - followed by Short+Sweet Dance - runs in parallel with the annual short theatre fest, just up the road at the King Street Theatre.

Short Sweet And Theatre

Event Date: 08/01/2014, 07:30 pm

Short+Sweet - the festival of tasty short theatre bites
The annual festival of 10-minute plays opens 8 January running through to 3 March at the King Street Theatre, Newtown. The program changes weekly and plays Wed - Sat 7.30pm plus Sun 5.15. Plus the Wildcard performances: Sat 2:30pm, Sun 1pm and Mon at 7:30pm.

Theatre festival director Pete Malicki – taking the helm of his 3rd straight fest - said Short+Sweet was the biggest of its type in the world. This year it boasts 170 short plays – chosen from more than 1200 entries from all over Australia and internationally – and showcasing the talents of 320 writers and directors and more than 450 actors.

On display is the work of both seasoned professionals and talented newcomers – often in an explosive alchemical mix. This year Sydney also welcomes companies visiting from Malaysia and India where the international arm of Short+Sweet is already well-established.

Pete enthused about the networking opportunities such a festival offers artists as well as a door way to further fame - and sometimes even fortune!

"In 2009 when presenting my first Short+Sweet play I saw an amazing monologue by a young woman wrapped in bandages while talking about having sex with super villains.

“That actress was Steph Dawson who just recently landed herself a lead role as Annie Cresta in The Hunger Games."

Other Short+Sweet alumni include Rose Byrne and Brendan Cowell.

This year, the theatre festival runs in parallel during January to a Cabaret and Dance festival, just up the road at the New Theatre.

Band Of Magicians

Event Date: 09/01/2014, 07:30 pm

The World's first Magic Supergroup
One year ago, four of the hottest young magicians of the moment met for the first time and the world's first magic supergroup was born.

Natural showmen, Justin Willman, Nate Staniforth, Justin Flom and Australia's own James Galea are the faces of modern magic. Working together they have created an act loaded with outstanding illusions, dazzling deceptions and astounding artistry.

Each member's fierce sense of one-upmanship drives the whole Band of Magicians to new, increasingly impossible feats, creating magic that draws on their collective talents, far surpassing what one magician can accomplish alone. Keep your wits about you for this one. It's awe-inspiring entertainment from the finest magic specialists around.
