Dale Barlow Quartet

One of Australia's outstanding jazz musicians
Regarded as one of Australia's outstanding jazz musicians, saxophonist and band leader Dale Barlow was one of the first artists to play when Foundry616 launched last year - and the club is delighted to have this heavyweight player back with this outstanding band.

Dale performed at the 2013 International Jazz Day in Turkey alongside jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Branford Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Terri Lynn Carrington, Diane Reeves and many more.

Tenor saxophonist Dale Barlow is one of Australia's few jazz artists with a real international profile, mainly stemming from his stint with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the 1980s (resulting in several albums, most featuring some of Barlows compositions) and recordings with American artists including the Cedar Walton Trio and Billy Cobham, as well as performances with Gil Evans Orchestra and Chet Baker.His reputation was further enhanced with extensive touring throughout Europe and Britain, as well as Asia, South Africa, and the U.S.A.

Barlow is at the helm of this new band, whose players were described by John Shand (Sydney Morning Herald) as having "...musicality, an instinct for avoiding imposing themselves on the music and a lightness in the enunciation of rhythms".

This band is set to ignite the stage on a semi regular basis at Foundry616 as Barlow prepares them for a recording to add to an extensive catalogue of albums as a leader.

Kristin Berardi makes her first, much anticipated, performance at Foundry616.

Now based in Brisbane, she has one of Australia's most recognisable voices and many
accolades, including winning the Montreux Jazz Festival's International Vocal Competition in 2006, supporting Al Jarreau and George Benson at Montreux Jazz Festival 2007 and touring Europe with James Sherlock in their well known duo format, winning the National Freedman Fellowship 2007, the National Australian Bell Award for the Best Jazz Vocal Album for 2010 and also being honoured with the Freedman Fellowship for Jazz in 2010.

Most recently she was awarded another Bell Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album of the Year, and the National Jazz Award for Jazz Voice at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival 2012.

She has released six albums in Australia, and was hand picked by Jon Gordon for his album Evolution, for American Label ArtistShare in 2009.

While Kristin is in high demand as a performer, she is also a much respected vocal teacher, with former positions at Australian National Universityand Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music. 2013 will see her take a part time position at the Brisbane Conservatorium.

The Kristin Berardi Band features Greg Coffin (piano) Carl Morgan (guitar) Brett Hirst (bass) and Tim Firth (drums) and this group has just recorded their second album.

They will be playing a mix of Berardi's originals and some of their favourite jazz standards.

Surviving A Zombie Apocalypse

Looking for something to do during the school holidays? Something a little out of the ordinary?

The Museum of Human Disease is Australia's only publicly accessible medical disease museum - which means this is the only place to come face to face with the deadliest killers in Australia.

We can also teach you how to avoid many of them - including the coming Zombie Apocalypse* (also werewolves*, SARS, influenza, Bird and Swine flu).

Keep your eyes peeled for daily "special activities" including how to wrap a bandage, brain making, zombie disguise make-up, lectures from Zombie "experts", experiments and classes. You could also watch a "virtual autopsy" or build your own "Super Bug" zombie disease.

* Zombies, Zombie Apocalypses and werewolves may not be real, but the science, and fun you will have, are very real.

Running from January 6th to the 24th 2014.
Open Monday to Friday from 9am till 5pm.
Also open Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th of January 9am till 5pm.

Adult's only Zombie movie night and expert talk on Saturday the 18th of January... check website for more details.
