V.D.

Event Date: 07/05/2014, 07:30 pm

VD by Pete Malicki
“Every year she’s single on Valentine’s Day, Sophie buys a cat. She has 10 cats…”

After full houses and standing ovations in April, V.D. is returning to the New for another three shows. This one-woman comedy explores the life of Sophie, a 35-year-old romantic who likes a bit too much gin. We join her as she falls in and out of love, struggles with power plays in her new job, and travels to India on a journey of spiritual (un)enlightenment.

Written by Australia’s leading monologue playwright, Pete Malicki, V.D. has won a total of 13 awards, including Best Play and Best Comedy at Short+Sweet Auckland 2013, Best Theatre Performance at Brighton Fringe, People’s Choice Winner and Best Comedy at Short+Sweet Brisbane 2011. It’s performed by Eliza St John, who won Best Actress at an international festival in Chennai, India in 2013.

As a 10 minute play, it has been performed in Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne, Auckland, Malaysia, England, US, Scotland (Edinburgh Fringe), Philippines and India.
Eliza flies to Brighton England the day after closing night to perform V.D. there.

“…a hilarious and deeply entertaining hour-long monologue in which Eliza St john carries the audience in the palm of her hand, perfectly delivering Malicki’s script… I’ve seen a few of Pete Malicki’s plays now, but this is by far his strongest, the wit and confidence shining through every performed word. V.D. is a simple tale, beautifully told, but it is achingly funny, made all the more so by St John’s excellent performance. She owns the character Sophie; they have morphed into one.” Review

“V.D. left audience members in stitches with lines such as ‘Did you ever notice how Valentine’s Day shares the same initials as venereal disease?’ This script is electrically performed by Eliza St John, whose personality and talent is stunningly showcased in this stellar performance.” Review

Kristen Fletcher Trio - Quick Tix

Event Date: 05/05/2014, 08:30 pm

Pop & Jazz Fusion
Foundry616 is delighted to welcome this exciting young trio to the stage for the first time.

Kristen’s trio has been performing for the past 5 years with Carlo Tapia on bass & Dom Cabrera on drums. With each musician accomplished in their own right, they enjoy taking risks & pushing boundaries making each show a unique experience. KF3 have created a sound that is "rather unique on Australian shores" according to Tone Deaf in relation to their effortless blend of pop & jazz fusion. The trio fuse electronic elements with the iconic jazz sound & some serious funk, with Kristen's smooth vocals being the glue that holds it all together.

In 2013, the trio embarked upon their most exciting endeavour yet, the recording & releasing of their self-titled debut album.

Currently they are preparing for their first International Tour to the Philippines in May so come and catch this farewell gig where you are guaranteed to hear them in top form.

BELLE

Event Date: 04/05/2014, 08:00 pm

Based on the inspiring true story
BELLE is the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mabatha-Raw), who was the illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral and a negress slave.

Belle was a remarkable figure in 18th century society, being the first mixed-race woman to be raised as an aristocrat.
Being in the care of her great-uncle, Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the colour of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing.

Left to wonder what her future will hold, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar's son bent on change who, with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England.

NOTE:
The tickets will be posted in an envelope to the winner’s address and can be used at participating cinema.
Information on valid days and screening times can be found on the tickets.

The Pirates Of Penzance

Event Date: 03/05/2014, 02:00 pm

Stash the gold, guard the women and hide the rum - the Pirates are coming!
This swashbuckling musical comedy adventure, presented by Chatswood Musical Society (whose recent productions of Joseph, Dusty and Miss Saigon all won popular and critical acclaim) is loaded with enough laughs to fill Davey Jones' locker and it stars an all-singing, all-dancing, all-star cast!

The Pirates of Penzance follows the fortunes of Frederic, a devastatingly handsome young lad who is mistakenly apprenticed to the Pirate King. When Frederic falls for the equally delectable Mabel, (whose father is the very model of a modern Major General), a tempest brews on the sea of love.

Full of roving rogues, piratical puns and dazzling damsels in distress, it's a treasure chest full of mischievous musical mayhem. A topsy-turvy tale of love and duty highlighted by the famous strains of 'Poor Wandering One,' 'I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General,' 'Oh, Is There Not One Maiden Breast' and more.

This is the Joseph Papp version that packed them in on Broadway. For Chatswood, Annie Veitch directs with musical director Gerard Plummer and choreography by Stephanie Edmonds. It stars Georgia Burley, Joshua Oxley, Andrew Dickson, Paul Murton, Alison Griffiths & William Sunderland.

Funny, flirty and filled with bumbling pirates and keystone-ish cops, it’s no wonder this Gilbert and Sullivan was such a hit when it premiered in 1879. It still is, though years have rolled over its head… 135 years later, it remains a favourite on stages throughout the world. So don’t miss the boat!

THOM PAIN - Based On Nothing

Event Date: 05/05/2014, 08:00 pm

The Pulitzer Prize nominated play for ONE WEEK ONLY
Thom Pain is just like you, except worse.
He is trying to save his life, to save your life ‐ in that order. In his quest for salvation, he'll stop at nothing, be distracted by nothing, except maybe a piece of lint, or the woman in the second row.
Award winning American playwright, Will Eno’s comic, disturbing and provocative play, is playing for one week only.

THOM PAIN (based on nothing) charts one man's anguished journey from shattered childhood dreams to the tenuous optimism of adulthood, told in dangerous intimacy by a voice loaded with wry humour and deceptive charm. In a surreal but touching exploration of death, rejection, love and fear, Thom Pain questions as much as he reveals, yet affirms life's worth through a realisation of its unpredictable splendours amid its predictable mediocrities.

MOTHERS

Event Date: 02/05/2014, 08:00 pm

A show that shines light on the good, the bad & the ugly sides of motherhood
MOTHERS – showcasing the original work of two dozen Australian writers, actors and directors – is an honest tribute to the heroic efforts and sacrifices made by mothers of all ages.

Its nine main characters span the breadth of the maternal spectrum: a woman whose romantic dream is to be a mother; a teen who hadn’t planned to be one; a new mum in her 40s; a motherless mother; a soon-to-be grandmother; a mourning mum; a struggling immigrant mum; a role-juggling mum; and a very different kind of mother – all have a story to tell.

Together their sometimes funny, often moving or confronting tales blend to a whole that mums – and dads – of all ages will relate to.
