Experience an outstanding jazz band
Mike Nock kicks off the new year with this stellar quartet featuring new addition and drumming sensation Oli Nelson, winner of this years James Morrison Scholarship. With saxophonist Karl Laskowski and bassist Brett Hirst completing the picture, this promises a start to the festive season in style with this brilliant group playing today’s jazz at its exciting best!

Since Mike Nock’s 1985 return to Australia, his groups have maintained a tradition of introducing outstanding younger musicians to Australian audiences.

This special edition of his quartet features 2013 Generations in Jazz winner, drummer Oli Nelson with established heavyweights bassist Brett Hirst and saxophonist Karl Laskowski, in a program of Mike’s originals along with selected jazz standards. This will be an exciting night of music – expect sparks to fly!

Sydney jazz vocalist and songwriter Tina Harrod is well known for her unique style and stage presence - and with the release of a third exciting album as well as headlining the Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival recently at Foundry616, the dynamic singer continues to push boundaries and blaze a path of her own.

Her acclaimed album of jazz infused covers Worksongs (2008), then the visceral and cathartic album of originals Temporary People (2010) rightly saw Harrod recognized as one of Australia’s finest singers. Now with The Revolution is Eternal Tina Harrod once again explores new territory with an album of original songs co-written with bassist/composer Jonathan Zwartz and the great LA based pianist and Hammond organ player Larry Goldings, and produced by award winning composer and piano player Stu Hunter.

Come and experience a thrilling big band led by one of Australia's great pianist/composer and educators, Judy Bailey, in a rare opportunity of a jazz club setting.

Judy Bailey (Musical Director): Since arriving from New Zealand, Judy has become one of Australia`s leading musical identities. In addition to a prolific career involving performance, recording, touring and teaching. Judy has received numerous awards, including the inaugural APRA award for Jazz Composition, an Australian Entertainment award for Jazz Performance, the Order of Australia Medal for services to Jazz and Education, and more recently, the Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music. Judy continues to teach at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Jazz Connection is part of the Sydney Youth Jazz Ensemble Inc, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the provision of high quality music for youth, under the musical direction of Judy Bailey. These young jazz musicians are drawn from throughout the Sydney region, most attending the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Jazz Connection plays a large range of music. From early Ellington to Basie, from Brookmeyer to Judy Bailey’s originals: Come and enjoy a musical journey from the early 1900s to the present, revisiting the great bands including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Thad Jones and more.This show is great for all ages – especially young budding musicians –to come and get a taste of what big bands are about.
