Pen Island - Quick Tix

Event Date: 12/03/2014, 08:30 pm

Jazz with an eclectic take on entertainment
When a trio of talented young jazz musicians bring contemporary jazz together with an eclectic take on entertainment, you can expect a well orchestrated evening of music and fun.

Pen Island present a unique approach to standards, showcasing a wide range of influences approached through the traditional piano trio format. On stage humour, expressed through the music or through stage antics and costumes has a long history in jazz, perhaps exemplified best in the modern period by Sun Ra and in Australia by ensembles like the Adam Simmons Toy Band and the Hoodangers.

But with these three outstanding young artists, it is easy to look beyond the eccentricity to enjoy the musicianship of a high order from pianist Gerard Masters, whose rock credits include Missy Higgins and the Potbelleez but away from the rock/pop circuit he is one of the most exciting pianists in Sydney, bassist Brett Hirst and rising star, drummer MilesThomas.

Pen Island’s music is filled with surprise and drama, a compelling and joyful musical mayhem of a piano trio with a difference.

The show-stopping trio have recently released their first album, Just Blowing, on Ladder Recordings.

Come and enjoy a fun night out @ Foundry616 with this engaging and hugely entertaining ensemble.

Gerard 'Phantom Jazz' Masters (piano)
Brett 'Lumberjack' Hirst (bass)
Miles 'Stallion' Thomas (drums)

Briana Cowlishaw

Event Date: 08/03/2014, 08:30 pm

Sophisticated, edgy and stunningly musical
Sophisticated, edgy, and stunningly musical, Briana Cowlishaw returns to Foundry616 after launching her successful second CD Paper Mache City in late 2013.

Born out of the multi-dimensional musical frenzy of New York City, Briana Cowlishaw's Paper Mache City is a collection of songs that one would call stylistically and sonically diverse. Briana's music fuses elements of pop, jazz, folk and rock with 'a modern day Beatles air' as she likes to describe it!

Her sweet tempered vocals and honest lyrics tell a story of life, love, confusion and realisation, drawing inspiration from the greats like Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. All the while, an underlying grounding in the jazz language and all it's delicacies plays itself out superbly.

With her playful and quirky approach and a very strong band of musicians behind her, Briana has carved out her own niche in the Australian music scene,

The band is firing and Cowlishaw sounds as if the world is hers. It just might be.

"With influences ranging from Joni Mitchell and James Taylor to painters Rothko and Picasso, Cowlishaw's new sound is bound to be a heady brew." - George Palathingal, Sydney Morning Herald

“Her songs routinely thwart expectations of where they might go next ... Cowlishaw’s lighter-than-air voice drifts and floats, even as it tackles her songs’ harmonic twists.”
John Shand, The Sydney Morning Herald

“Cowlishaw has a young woman’s voice; high, bright, clean. It’s an attractive instrument, and she uses it accurately and judiciously, delivering her lyrics persuasively. Of course, her work is superbly enhanced by the musicians surrounding her.”
Adrian Jackson, Rhythms

Recent performances have ensured a strong following for the band, headlining at the Norfolk Island Jazz Festival, Darling Harbour Fiesta, Brazilian Ritmo Day, Newcastle Jazz Festival and more. Ranging from fiery percussive grooves to beautifully sparse textures the band plays authentic repertoire on authentic instruments from all over Brazil as well as marrying traditional rhythms to unexpected songs from other genres.

A formidable line up of musicians with great improvisational musicality as well as structured grooves. Come enjoy a “whisper” of Brazil.

Ben Panucci Trio

Event Date: 05/03/2014, 08:30 pm

Experience one of Sydney's best young jazz trios
"He scorches on his electric guitar, which sounds like it's set to 'attack' mode. He's kind of like a jazz Hendrix".
- Australian Stage

Guitarist and composer Ben Panucci is a key figure in a surprise contemporary movement of young musicians who go backwards, forwards and sideways throughout the jazz tradition... Ben Panucci's trio - with bassist Allex Boneham and drummer James Waples - combines several aspects of what they do, in an intimate setting. They can sound a bit like the Hot Club Of france, with that lightly stomping beat, then they can move into somewhat Debussyesque atmospherics and equally atmospheric free improvisation. Their playing in all idioms has a magic combination of authenticity and individuality. Entertainment values are high and so is sheer musicality. Spirit is the word.

"Panucci is a wonderful guitarist who can play fluent, clean modern jazz lines and also reach back into the colouristic, richly chorded effects of the earliest electric guitiarists (some of who were jazz players). He can remind you of one or other of the guitarists who played in Nat King Cole's early trios and quartets. With all that his own personality is instantly recognizable. Panucci and his trio are a delight."
-John Clare
