Java Quartet

Event Date: 06/02/2014, 08:30 pm

The band's late summer program at Foundry616
"The Java Quartet is well schooled in the Jazz tradition and has built on those concepts in presenting music with dash and a contemporary flair… These Aussies seem to have something brewing". Frank Rubolino, Cadence Magazine, New York

A band with a pedigree and a band with staying power. Bandleader and bassist Michael Galeazzi formed the Java Quartet in 1994. Using the modal jazz styling of Miles Davis and John Coltrane as a starting point, the group has since defined its own ambience through six albums, focusing upon ensemble improvisation to manifest their sound. At once driving, trance-like and reflective, The Java Quartet establishes their own corner of sonic territory.

2010 found the group extending its musical palette with Rejavanation, a collection of remixes and new material incorporating the meditative aesthetics of contemporary dj/dance culture and Hindustani ragas. Started as a part of Michael Galeazzi’s postgraduate research at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the group has invited guests of note (including virtuosos Bobby Singh on Tabla, Adrian McNeil on sarod, lap top performer Jonathan Palmer and Hip Hop producer Morganics) to explore notions of hybridity through contemporary hypnotic landscapes.

In 2014 a new album of original compositions will be released, taking the next step beyond Rejavanation. Once again including guests Bobby Singh and Morganics, this album returns to the acoustic (and organic) nature of the group, blending exotic grooves and spoken word into the jazz harmonic world that is The Java Quartet.

With this new release in the pipeline for 2014 and a new buzz around the band, we are delighted to present the band in late summer program.

Short Sweet And Theatre

Event Date: 05/02/2014, 07:30 pm

Short+Sweet - the festival of tasty short theatre bites
The annual festival of 10-minute plays opens 8 January running through to 3 March at the King Street Theatre, Newtown. The program changes weekly and plays Wed - Sat 7.30pm plus Sun 5.15. Plus the Wildcard performances: Sat 2:30pm, Sun 1pm and Mon at 7:30pm.

Theatre festival director Pete Malicki – taking the helm of his 3rd straight fest - said Short+Sweet was the biggest of its type in the world. This year it boasts 170 short plays – chosen from more than 1200 entries from all over Australia and internationally – and showcasing the talents of 320 writers and directors and more than 450 actors.

On display is the work of both seasoned professionals and talented newcomers – often in an explosive alchemical mix. This year Sydney also welcomes companies visiting from Malaysia and India where the international arm of Short+Sweet is already well-established.

Pete enthused about the networking opportunities such a festival offers artists as well as a door way to further fame - and sometimes even fortune!

"In 2009 when presenting my first Short+Sweet play I saw an amazing monologue by a young woman wrapped in bandages while talking about having sex with super villains.

“That actress was Steph Dawson who just recently landed herself a lead role as Annie Cresta in The Hunger Games."

Other Short+Sweet alumni include Rose Byrne and Brendan Cowell.

This year, the theatre festival runs in parallel during January to a Cabaret and Dance festival, just up the road at the New Theatre.

AT LAST - The Etta James Story

Event Date: 03/02/2014, 07:00 pm

Returns to Sydney following a smash-hit national tour
The sensational Vika Bull and the Essential R & B Band return to Sydney Opera House to enthral audiences once again with the story of one of the most influential soul singers of all time: Etta James.

In 1938 America had endured a full decade of hardships and economic misery as The Great Depression wreaked havoc across the damaged land. It was to this turbulent backdrop that a fourteen-year-old African American girl gave birth to a baby daughter named Jamesetta Hawkins, but the world would come to know her as Etta. Etta James.

During a long and tumultuous career Etta influenced a vast array of artists from a variety of genres and musical styles including The Rolling Stones, Diana Ross, Janis Joplin, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder and more…many more. Etta has been recognized as bridging the gap between rhythm & blues, rock & roll to pop, inspiring the careers of a new generation of artists from Christina Aguilera, Joss Stone and the late Amy Winehouse.

Sadly, her frantic recording and touring schedule coincided with her ever-growing addiction problems and over time Etta not only sang the blues…she lived the blues.

With respect, this is her story.

At Last – The Etta James Story is a two-hour narrative concert starring Vika Bull. Vika brings her heart, soul and funk to tell the story of Etta’s turbulent life and sing her best loved songs including: ‘Tell Mama,’, ‘Something’s Got A Hold On Me’, ‘Pushover’, the heart rending ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’, her iconic signature song ‘At Last’ and more.

Vika Bull will be joined on stage by the sizzling hot The Essential R & B Band that will get you out of your seat and dancing in the aisles!
