The Sound Of Music

Event Date: 21/02/2014, 07:30 pm

Back by popular demand: Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music
The unforgettable Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music experience is back again for three performances ONLY.

Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music is a major audience participation event and an unparalleled night of entertainment where the audience become the stars of the show! See the classic movie on the big screen, re-mastered to its original cinematic glory and with SONG SUBTITLES on the screen so whether you’re an avid Sound of Music enthusiast or only know a lyric or two, the song sub-titles ensure no one misses a beat!

This year’s event sees the return of the sensational Marika Aubrey as your Host! Currently gracing the stage as part of the stellar cast of 'South Pacific' and having dazzled an array of cabaret audiences across Australia and the United States, Marika will guide the animated crowd in song and action as well as judge (with a little bit of help from the Audience Clap-O-Meter!) the show’s famous audience costume parade.

For all Sing-A-Long-A- newbies, be prepared to pull out your Leisl-inspired Gazebo gown, press your best white dresses with blue satin sashes, whip up some Lederhosen made from curtain fabric, or even brown paper (packages) tied up with string! There will be everything from gaggles of nuns to goats and goat herders, even the Alps themselves! Limited only by your imagination!

A tremendous atmosphere fills the theatre, one that is well worth while experiencing first-hand, as the crowd goes wild at those iconic moments - cheering when we see our beloved Julie Andrews for the first time, wolf-whistles for the Captain, hisses for the Baroness – a favourite……and big boos for the Nazis!

So get together with a few of your favourite friends, whip up a cozzie, warm up those vocal chords and get ready to be a part of the ultimate sing-a-long experience as we celebrate the world’s favourite movie music

Privates On Parade

Event Date: 12/02/2014, 07:30 pm

Young and innocent Private Steven Flowers is posted to Singapore to entertain the British troops.
Young and innocent Private Steven Flowers is posted to Singapore to entertain the British troops during the Malayan Emergency in 1948. As part of the ‘Song And Dance Unit South East Asia’ (SADUSEA), he finds himself in a company of military misfits.

The star of the troupe is flamboyant Captain ‘Auntie’ Terri Dennis, a civilian soldier who much prefers lipstick and a feather boa to a rifle and fatigues and delights in running the gamut of drag from Carmen Miranda to Marlene Dietrich to Vera Lynn. With a penchant for sailors and a heart of gold, he benevolently guides this group of shy, sexually inexperienced young lads, straight and gay, as they journey from boys to men, far from home fighting a ruthless enemy in a jungle guerrilla war.

Peter Nichol’s delightful coming-of-age comedy is underpinned by a darker and more poignant reality. Political themes of colonialism, revolution, homophobia and racism and personal stories of fear, loneliness and falling in love, are all served up in a camp concoction of songs, dance, blokes in frocks and very naughty laughs.

“Privates on Parade is like Apocalypse Now given the Kenneth Williams remix or Cabaret retold by Noël Coward … incredibly good fun” Time Out, London

PRIVATES ON PARADE is based on Peter Nichol’s own experiences of doing his National Service as part of an entertainment unit in Singapore (a unit which included Kenneth Williams of Carry On fame). The play won the prestigious Lawrence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy when in debuted in 1977. A film, starring John Cleese, soon followed, and it has enjoyed many revivals over the years since. New Theatre first produced the play in 1989; and in 2012, it was the inaugural production for the new Michael Grandage Company in London, with Simon Russell Beale in the bravura role of ‘Terri Dennis’.

Director Alice Livingstone has been involved in a number of past Mardi Gras productions, as either director, actor or producer, including Mother Clap’s Molly

Short Sweet And Theatre

Event Date: 13/02/2014, 07:30 pm

Short+Sweet - the festival of tasty short theatre bites
The annual festival of 10-minute plays opens 8 January running through to 3 March at the King Street Theatre, Newtown. The program changes weekly and plays Wed - Sat 7.30pm plus Sun 5.15. Plus the Wildcard performances: Sat 2:30pm, Sun 1pm and Mon at 7:30pm.

Theatre festival director Pete Malicki – taking the helm of his 3rd straight fest - said Short+Sweet was the biggest of its type in the world. This year it boasts 170 short plays – chosen from more than 1200 entries from all over Australia and internationally – and showcasing the talents of 320 writers and directors and more than 450 actors.

On display is the work of both seasoned professionals and talented newcomers – often in an explosive alchemical mix. This year Sydney also welcomes companies visiting from Malaysia and India where the international arm of Short+Sweet is already well-established.

Pete enthused about the networking opportunities such a festival offers artists as well as a door way to further fame - and sometimes even fortune!

"In 2009 when presenting my first Short+Sweet play I saw an amazing monologue by a young woman wrapped in bandages while talking about having sex with super villains.

“That actress was Steph Dawson who just recently landed herself a lead role as Annie Cresta in The Hunger Games."

Other Short+Sweet alumni include Rose Byrne and Brendan Cowell.

This year, the theatre festival runs in parallel during January to a Cabaret and Dance festival, just up the road at the New Theatre.
