A show about the great singer & songwriter Joni Mitchell
RAINEE LYLESON: Take Me As I Am: An Evening with Joni Mitchell

“It felt like I was sitting in a club in the 70s watching Joni Mitchell sing and tell her stories. I almost forgot where I was! Rainee has the accent, the mannerisms, the instrument playing and the singing down pat. An incredible show not to be missed! There may have been tears.”
- Lauren Lucille, Nina and Lauren: An Evening with Nina Simone

Rainee Lyleson embodies Joni Mitchell in her one-woman show about the great singer-songwriter. Joined by some of Sydney's best young musicians in what people are calling "an awe-inspiring tribute to Joni", Rainee weaves music with the stories that inspired so many of her great songs like Both Sides Now, River, Amelia, and Big Yellow Taxi. With a focus on a reworking of much of her material into a jazz format, this show is for Joni Mitchell fans and music lovers alike.

Short Sweet And Theatre - Quick Tix

Event Date: 20/02/2014, 07:30 pm

Short+Sweet - the festival of tasty short theatre bites
The annual festival of 10-minute plays opens 8 January running through to 3 March at the King Street Theatre, Newtown. The program changes weekly and plays Wed - Sat 7.30pm plus Sun 5.15. Plus the Wildcard performances: Sat 2:30pm, Sun 1pm and Mon at 7:30pm.

Theatre festival director Pete Malicki – taking the helm of his 3rd straight fest - said Short+Sweet was the biggest of its type in the world. This year it boasts 170 short plays – chosen from more than 1200 entries from all over Australia and internationally – and showcasing the talents of 320 writers and directors and more than 450 actors.

On display is the work of both seasoned professionals and talented newcomers – often in an explosive alchemical mix. This year Sydney also welcomes companies visiting from Malaysia and India where the international arm of Short+Sweet is already well-established.

Pete enthused about the networking opportunities such a festival offers artists as well as a door way to further fame - and sometimes even fortune!

"In 2009 when presenting my first Short+Sweet play I saw an amazing monologue by a young woman wrapped in bandages while talking about having sex with super villains.

“That actress was Steph Dawson who just recently landed herself a lead role as Annie Cresta in The Hunger Games."

Other Short+Sweet alumni include Rose Byrne and Brendan Cowell.

This year, the theatre festival runs in parallel during January to a Cabaret and Dance festival, just up the road at the New Theatre.

The Embroidery Girl

Event Date: 18/02/2014, 07:30 pm

The Embroidery Girl is coming to Sydney
Following a successful tour of the United States, playing New York and Washington DC’s internationally renowned Kennedy Center, The Embroidery Girl is coming to Sydney for two performances at the State Theatre on February 18 & 19.

The US shows received critical acclaim:

“There were several dances which could have stood alone… the music was especially composed for this production and telegraphed the ecstasy and agony experience by the characters… the stage design here was a spectacular tour de force!

“The Embroidery Girl was a stunningly beautiful experience. When it comes to your town you must buy tickets for the entire family.”
FRANCINE SCHWARTZ, Washington DC Metro Arts

The Embroidery Girl

The story of the dance The Embroidery Girl takes place during the transition period from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. It tells the tragic love story of Xiu Niang, a girl who has mastered Suzhou Embroidery, and a painter named Ming Zuan. The dance/drama portrays a romantic heroine who together with her artist beau, fights against the feudal ethical code, and pursues her liberation from bondage as a concubine and captive of an arranged marriage.
