Event Date: 13/03/2014, 08:30 pm

Experience fierce and exciting tango
Tángalo are a Sydney-based tango quintet who perform a mix of original compositions and existing tangos.Formed in 2011 by Emily-Rose Šarkova and Owen Salomé, Tángalo grew from a desire to create a greater awareness of tango culture in Australia and the fierce desire to see more tango-dancing to live tango-music.

Successful performances at festivals including the 2013 Made in Argentina, Buenos Aires in the Southern Highlands and the 2012 & 2013 National Folk Festivals have seen Tángalo become a favourite among dancers and audiences. 2013 saw the group tour with Argentine tango singer Fabían Rodríguez and collaborate with Belentango and Tango Butterfly.

In 2014, Tángalo are recipients of an Australia Council for the Arts JUMP mentorship, which will see them travel to Argentina and work in close collaboration with bandoneon player Hugo Satorre (Orquesta Victoria, Otros Aires)

Tángalo use Violin, Guitar, Double Bass, Flute, Accordion, Piano and Voices to create a sound that is beguiling and vividly personal. The dazzling instrumental lines and impassioned vocals reference both the poetic background of tango music, and something considerably more modern.

Owen Salomé (Composition, Arranging, Flute, Guitar, Vocals)
Emily-Rose Šarkova (Composition, Arranging, Accordion, Vocals)
Susie Bishop (Violin, Lead Vocals)
Amy Putt (Piano)
Johan Delin (Double Bass)

Pen Island

Event Date: 12/03/2014, 08:30 pm

Jazz with an eclectic take on entertainment
When a trio of talented young jazz musicians bring contemporary jazz together with an eclectic take on entertainment, you can expect a well orchestrated evening of music and fun.

Pen Island present a unique approach to standards, showcasing a wide range of influences approached through the traditional piano trio format. On stage humour, expressed through the music or through stage antics and costumes has a long history in jazz, perhaps exemplified best in the modern period by Sun Ra and in Australia by ensembles like the Adam Simmons Toy Band and the Hoodangers.

But with these three outstanding young artists, it is easy to look beyond the eccentricity to enjoy the musicianship of a high order from pianist Gerard Masters, whose rock credits include Missy Higgins and the Potbelleez but away from the rock/pop circuit he is one of the most exciting pianists in Sydney, bassist Brett Hirst and rising star, drummer MilesThomas.

Pen Island’s music is filled with surprise and drama, a compelling and joyful musical mayhem of a piano trio with a difference.

The show-stopping trio have recently released their first album, Just Blowing, on Ladder Recordings.

Come and enjoy a fun night out @ Foundry616 with this engaging and hugely entertaining ensemble.

Gerard 'Phantom Jazz' Masters (piano)
Brett 'Lumberjack' Hirst (bass)
Miles 'Stallion' Thomas (drums)

Briana Cowlishaw

Event Date: 08/03/2014, 08:30 pm

Sophisticated, edgy and stunningly musical
Sophisticated, edgy, and stunningly musical, Briana Cowlishaw returns to Foundry616 after launching her successful second CD Paper Mache City in late 2013.

Born out of the multi-dimensional musical frenzy of New York City, Briana Cowlishaw's Paper Mache City is a collection of songs that one would call stylistically and sonically diverse. Briana's music fuses elements of pop, jazz, folk and rock with 'a modern day Beatles air' as she likes to describe it!

Her sweet tempered vocals and honest lyrics tell a story of life, love, confusion and realisation, drawing inspiration from the greats like Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. All the while, an underlying grounding in the jazz language and all it's delicacies plays itself out superbly.

With her playful and quirky approach and a very strong band of musicians behind her, Briana has carved out her own niche in the Australian music scene,

The band is firing and Cowlishaw sounds as if the world is hers. It just might be.

"With influences ranging from Joni Mitchell and James Taylor to painters Rothko and Picasso, Cowlishaw's new sound is bound to be a heady brew." - George Palathingal, Sydney Morning Herald

“Her songs routinely thwart expectations of where they might go next ... Cowlishaw’s lighter-than-air voice drifts and floats, even as it tackles her songs’ harmonic twists.”
John Shand, The Sydney Morning Herald

“Cowlishaw has a young woman’s voice; high, bright, clean. It’s an attractive instrument, and she uses it accurately and judiciously, delivering her lyrics persuasively. Of course, her work is superbly enhanced by the musicians surrounding her.”
Adrian Jackson, Rhythms
