The Pride

Event Date: 18/03/2014, 08:00 pm

The drama of the jungle never felt so close to home...
Side Pony Productions and Rock Surfers Theatre Company present The Pride, a pitch black comedy taking a long hard look at lions.

Weighed down by his impressive mane, Bruce is struggling with the pressure of renovations and taking care of his pride.

He knows his time is limited when James, his younger, stronger, more handsome neighbour, starts peering through the windows admiring Bruce's home and family. The drama of the jungle has never seemed so close to home than in this award-winning comedy exploring people's readiness to forgive, even in the face of gross moral trespasses.

“One of the most original shows on the fringe… moments of complete genius.” The Stage

“An eclectic combination of the Mighty Boosh, ‘The Lion King’ and something out of a marriage counseling session, The Pride is a roaring success and a CAT-astrophically good piece of comedy and heartfelt performance.”
Five Stars, edfringereview.com

The Pride makes its Sydney debut at Rock Surfers after enjoying successful seasons at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Under the Radar (Brisbane), Perth Theatre Company and The Blue Room Theatre, where it took out both the Best Production and Members' Choice awards.

SOCRATES NOW

Event Date: 14/03/2014, 07:30 pm

With Emmy award-winning Greek actor Yannis Simonides
"The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates 399 BC

Humility, wit and the courage to face the ultimate threat with fearless honesty.
Socrates was all this and more.

He was also a timeless, universal stirrer and political radical:
in his own words "the horsefly that bit the arse of Athens".

Now the legendary godfather of philosophy is brought to life, on stage, for just three Sydney performances.
Audiences can ask him questions too; and you can interview him on Sydney radio!

Emmy award-winning Greek actor Yannis Simonides channels the role he has made his own
(in more than 300 international performances) in Sydney next week:

SOCRATES NOW
Seymour Centre York Theatre Friday 14 March and Saturday 15 March at 7.30pm (in English)
and The Factory Theatre on Sunday 16 March at 5pm (in modern Greek).

And Melbourne audiences can still catch the show in both languages from tonight... and later this week.
See attached and www.socratesnow.com.au for details

This funny, thrilling and provocative modern adaptation of the Apology of Socrates,
by the master's faithful student Plato, is a must-see for lovers of theatre, history, philosophy, politics...
or anyone who wants their zest for life re-charged!

Event Date: 13/03/2014, 08:30 pm

Experience fierce and exciting tango
Tángalo are a Sydney-based tango quintet who perform a mix of original compositions and existing tangos.Formed in 2011 by Emily-Rose Šarkova and Owen Salomé, Tángalo grew from a desire to create a greater awareness of tango culture in Australia and the fierce desire to see more tango-dancing to live tango-music.

Successful performances at festivals including the 2013 Made in Argentina, Buenos Aires in the Southern Highlands and the 2012 & 2013 National Folk Festivals have seen Tángalo become a favourite among dancers and audiences. 2013 saw the group tour with Argentine tango singer Fabían Rodríguez and collaborate with Belentango and Tango Butterfly.

In 2014, Tángalo are recipients of an Australia Council for the Arts JUMP mentorship, which will see them travel to Argentina and work in close collaboration with bandoneon player Hugo Satorre (Orquesta Victoria, Otros Aires)

Tángalo use Violin, Guitar, Double Bass, Flute, Accordion, Piano and Voices to create a sound that is beguiling and vividly personal. The dazzling instrumental lines and impassioned vocals reference both the poetic background of tango music, and something considerably more modern.

Pen Island

Event Date: 12/03/2014, 08:30 pm

Jazz with an eclectic take on entertainment
When a trio of talented young jazz musicians bring contemporary jazz together with an eclectic take on entertainment, you can expect a well orchestrated evening of music and fun.

Pen Island present a unique approach to standards, showcasing a wide range of influences approached through the traditional piano trio format. On stage humour, expressed through the music or through stage antics and costumes has a long history in jazz, perhaps exemplified best in the modern period by Sun Ra and in Australia by ensembles like the Adam Simmons Toy Band and the Hoodangers.

But with these three outstanding young artists, it is easy to look beyond the eccentricity to enjoy the musicianship of a high order from pianist Gerard Masters, whose rock credits include Missy Higgins and the Potbelleez but away from the rock/pop circuit he is one of the most exciting pianists in Sydney, bassist Brett Hirst and rising star, drummer MilesThomas.

Pen Island’s music is filled with surprise and drama, a compelling and joyful musical mayhem of a piano trio with a difference.

The show-stopping trio have recently released their first album, Just Blowing, on Ladder Recordings.

Come and enjoy a fun night out @ Foundry616 with this engaging and hugely entertaining ensemble.

Gerard 'Phantom Jazz' Masters (piano)
Brett 'Lumberjack' Hirst (bass)
Miles 'Stallion' Thomas (drums)
