Balmain Sinfonia, Bassoon Virtuoso

Event Date: 30/03/2014, 02:30 pm

Bassoon virtuoso, Mozart, Dvorak + sensuous Scheherazade in Sinfonia’'s first 2014 concert
The Balmain Sinfonia begins its 2014 series with a concert program to savour on Sunday 30 March 2.30pm at the elegant Macquarie Theatre, Macquarie University, North Ryde.

The orchestra’'s 22nd year under conductor and founding Director Gary Stavrou begins with a program of popular favourites as well
as a star turn for brilliant young Newcastle-based bassoon virtuoso, Ben Hoadley (who teaches bassoon at the University of Newcastle
and the Newcastle Conservatorium): Mozart'’s magical Bassoon Concerto, the composer's
only surviving concerto for that instrument and the most popular piece in the bassoon repetory, composed by Mozart at just 18.

The program also features Dvorak's My Homeland, sensuous Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov and Enescu'’s Romanian Rhapsody No.2 (a special request by an audience sponsor).

Strathfield Symphony goes to the Movies
Drum roll, dim the lights …… and let the fun begin! Strathfield Symphony goes to the movies.

From The Force of Destiny to The Ride of the Valkyries and Can Can, the first half will be a feast of fun. The second half features one of the most popular of Beethoven’s symphonies, the Seventh, a little more on the serious side.

The Concert:
Tears at the beginning? The tragedy of Jean de Florette and Manon des sources is inextricably linked with the haunting melody of Verdi’s The Force of Destiny. Thwarted love conquers all.

“I love the smell of napalm in the morning”.
The roar of helicopters mixed with Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries creates the unforgettable and truly apocalyptic image of Apocalypse Now.

Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld is a romp in the best French tradition. The Overture is full of memorable tunes and finishes with the once scandalous Can Can.

The second movement of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony has been used in countless films, the most recent being The King’s Speech. It is extraordinarily beautiful and moving.

Takadimi

Event Date: 21/03/2014, 08:30 pm

Playing wildly vibrant blend that is utterly unique & compelling.
Foundry616 is thrilled to present Sydney-based instrumental quintet Takadimi, a young band with a refreshing sound all their own - an engaging blend of folk, jazz, Latin and African influences as well as Indian classical music, from which the band's name derives. All this played out in a wildly vibrant blend that is utterly unique and compelling.

Their debut album, New Common Sense, created with a nod to seminal European label ECM Music (including Jan Garbarek, Bobo Stenson, or Tomasz Stanko) also reflects the group’s love of the New Acoustic bluegrass of Béla Fleck, the contemporary jazz of Esbjorn Svensson Trio and James Muller, and John Butler’s pounding tribal rhythms.

However, New Common Sense exceeds the sum of its various sources of inspiration, written collaboratively, it highlights a band working from a solid understanding of traditional styles to forge their own innovative approach to music-making. The album is a tribute to the skill, friendship and quiet optimism of a talented group of young musicians.

“Folk. Jazz. Latin. Bluegrass. However you want to label them, Sydney instrumental quintet Takadimi are definitely worth paying attention to. Their debut album New Common Sense mingles these styles and more on what can be best described as an eclectic global tour-de-force. ”
Cameron Barnett - Alternative Media Group

Takadimi are:
James Hazelwood-Dale (double bass)
Ben Kidson (drums)
Brianne Curran (violin)
James McKendry (guitars)
Kieran Ryan-Colton (guitars)

Dan Barnett - Swing Machine

Event Date: 20/03/2014, 08:30 pm

Sydney-based Big Band playing a wide range of styles
Foundry616 is thrilled to present this exciting Sydney-based big band led by Dan Barnett, one of our premier vocalist/trombonists.

This versatile young musician and his band thoroughly enjoy their music which, as the name Swing Machine suggests, ranges from 1920’s traditional Jazz, New Orleans/Dixie Jazz, to modern contemporary dance music and everything in between - Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Frank Sinatra, 50’s Rock n Roll, 60’s Soul & Funk and exciting Latin sounds - in the unique Dan Barnett style (with a voice that has been compared to Frank Sinatra andHarry Connick Jnr).

Held in high regard by his peers, Dan has assembled a collection of the very best musicians in the country. Their treatment of great standards like ‘Don't get around much any more’, ‘Tain't what you do it's the way that you do it’ and ‘The Point of no Return’ will guarantee that your guests will be humming them for days.

Having studied under some of the leading musicians in Australia and the USA, Dan Barnett went on to guest star with a wide cross section of performers – ranging from Dragon, The Whitlams and Jimmy Barnes - to The Gotham City Horns, James Morrison andTommy Emmanuel. He has also delighted theatre audiences with his featured roles in the Australian productions of “Buddy” (the Buddy Holly story); and “Testimony – The Legend of Charlie Parker”.

This is an ensemble to experience live - don't miss it!

High Windows Low Doorways teams writers with performers, to tell a tale from the actor’s own spiritu
Written by Ellana Costa, Noelle Janaczewska, Jonathan Ari Lander, Mark Langham, Katie Pollock, Alison Rooke and Melita Rowston
Performed by Kit Bennett, Matt Butcher, Alice Keohavong, Naomi Livingstone, Peter McAllum, Gavin Roach and Helen Tonkin
Directed by Paul Gilchrist

“Don’t tell me your beliefs.
They don’t sing, or laugh, or weep.
Speak of the visions you’ve had,
and the paths you’ve walked.
Tell me your stories.”

High Windows Low Doorways teams writers with performers, to tell a tale from the actor’s own spiritual experience.

Epiphany, euphoria and ecstasy,
those glorious moments when nothing makes sense, and it no longer matters.

Dread, despondency and despair,
those painful moments when it seems only too clear.

Join us as we share tales of fear, hope and love; of life, death and beyond.

“We don’t have answers. We only have ourselves.”
