Phillip Johnston Quartet

Event Date: 11/04/2014, 08:30 pm

World-class jazz at Foundry616
“Johnston …has a sophisticated and highly personalised compositional language that…. espouses his own quirky, groove-laden ideas."– John Shand, The Sydney Morning Herald

Coming from 2013’s premieres of Wordless! with Art Spiegelman at the GRAPHIC Festival, and his score for Lotte Reineger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) at Randwick Town Hall, Johnston returns to a quartet setting with long-time cohorts Alister Spence, Lloyd Swanton and Nic Cecire.

His upcoming events include Manhattan Moonrise, a new CD from The Microscopic Septet (USA), a performance of Prince Achmed at the 2014 Vivid Festival, and a US tour of Wordless! His recent performance at The Capital Jazz Project (Canberra) with Tight Corners was called “joyous and compelling” by John Shand in the SMH, and The New Yorker called him a “world-class instrumentalist.”

In this upcoming performance, he’ll be playing a mix of new material and works drawn from his many bands (The Coolerators, The Microscopic Septet, Big Trouble, and The Transparent Quartet).

It will be an evening combining improvisation and composition, and always, the unexpected.

Phillip Johnston (soprano saxophone)
Alister Spence (piano/organ)
Lloyd Swanton (bass)
Nic Cecire (drums)

WONDERLAND

Event Date: 09/04/2014, 07:30 pm

When is the moment we stop playing the hero & start becoming the villain?
Lexx Productions brings to Sydney after a successful Canberra premiere, Wonderland; a story of self discovery, destruction and love.

Wonderland follows two young lovers as they battle to defend their own actions during the war of a relationship. As they journey through the chapters of their story, they begin to wonder if the ideals they held so closely are nothing more than a fairytale.

Wonderland is a realistic story set in a fantastical setting, with sculptures created by international artist Andrew Grenfell. These sculptures embody the monsters inside the characters as they begin to question if all fairytales can end in happily ever after?

Warning: Coarse language and implied sex scenes.

Mark Ginsburg South African Project

Event Date: 05/04/2014, 08:30 pm

Come & enjoy world music beats sure to have you up and dancing
Led by saxophonist Mark Ginsburg, this is an exciting local band with a distinctive musicalityand purpose. Having made its debut at Foundry616 late last year, the band is performing on a regular basis at Foundry616, taking audiences on a fascinating musical journey.

Mark has been an determined advocate of building musical bridges between his native South Africa and his newer home, Australia. His efforts have seen him seen perform frequently at South African Jazz Festivals as well as taking groups from here on tour. His deep understanding of the varied, South African musical landscape can be heard in all his musical projects.

His recent participation at a the Grahamstown Jazz Festival in South Africa gave rise to this project which will feature the music of some of the most prolific jazz artists from South Africa. In addition to playing with Global Express, a collaboration of great musicians from Cape Town and Canada, Mark also played in a quintet of South African musicians playing "South African Jazz Standards"- For Mark, this was a real honour to be part of and also to once again feel that strong connection with the heartbeat of South Africa.

Some of that heartbeat will be felt at Foundry 616 - so come and enjoy world music beats sure to have you up and dancing!

Mark Ginsburg (saxophones)
Simon Ferenci (trumpet & flugelhorn)
Judy Campbell (vocals)
Ryan Grogan (piano)
Brendan Clark Jnr (bass)
Dave Goodman (drums)
