Dancing Naked In The Backyard

Event Date: 18/04/2014, 08:00 pm

A new Australian play from Brave New Word
Welcome to Hinton Street, a quiet suburb away from the stress of the city, where the neighbours are like family.
A neighbourhood that’s barely changed over the years, until a developer from Sylvan Towers arrives with a new concept: Village Living.

Lush gardens and parkland, shops, a waterfall feature and comfortable village housing are all promised. Sylvan Towers plans to give the residents here a new type of development, one that will keep the spirit of their environment.

But when Hinton Street starts to experience robberies, houses being de-valued and hidden personal histories then the question arises: Have these problems been there all along, or is Sylvan Towers too good to be true?

FULL BODY CONTACT NO LOVE TENNIS - Quick ...

Event Date: 15/04/2014, 08:00 pm

The News broken down, digested and made hilarious...right on the spot
Sydney's favourite improv comedy night is trying to figure out what it's all about. We have smart guests like A Rational Fear's Dan Ilic and Weekend Sunrise's Andrew O'Keefe coming in to chat about current affairs with us, to help us understand and we take it and put on comedy sketches made up on the spot.

For 8 years running, FULL BODY CONTACT NO LOVE TENNIS has been Sydney's best improv comedy night, winning awards and sending its cast members off to be famous on televisions and festivals. They deserve it, we say. Come and check out who's next before they move to LA and make the next Thor.

Ensemble Vinifera-Autumn

Event Date: 13/04/2014, 03:00 pm

Ensemble Vinifera perform a trio of Romantic trios at the Independent Theatre
Ensemble Vinifera returns to the Independent in 2014 with four seasonally inspired programs.
We settle into the golden glow of Autumn with a trio of romantic trios. We start with Ernst von Dohnanyi's stylish and idiosyncratic take on the Classical Serenade idiom, then amble through Robert Schumann's evocation of fairy tales for the uncommon trio of Viola, Clarinet and Piano.
Finally Brahms's epic first Piano Trio, written the year after he met Robert and Clara Schumann and formed friendships that would help define his life thereafter.

Phillip Johnston Quartet

Event Date: 11/04/2014, 08:30 pm

World-class jazz at Foundry616
“Johnston …has a sophisticated and highly personalised compositional language that…. espouses his own quirky, groove-laden ideas."– John Shand, The Sydney Morning Herald

Coming from 2013’s premieres of Wordless! with Art Spiegelman at the GRAPHIC Festival, and his score for Lotte Reineger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) at Randwick Town Hall, Johnston returns to a quartet setting with long-time cohorts Alister Spence, Lloyd Swanton and Nic Cecire.

His upcoming events include Manhattan Moonrise, a new CD from The Microscopic Septet (USA), a performance of Prince Achmed at the 2014 Vivid Festival, and a US tour of Wordless! His recent performance at The Capital Jazz Project (Canberra) with Tight Corners was called “joyous and compelling” by John Shand in the SMH, and The New Yorker called him a “world-class instrumentalist.”

In this upcoming performance, he’ll be playing a mix of new material and works drawn from his many bands (The Coolerators, The Microscopic Septet, Big Trouble, and The Transparent Quartet).

It will be an evening combining improvisation and composition, and always, the unexpected.

Phillip Johnston (soprano saxophone)
Alister Spence (piano/organ)
Lloyd Swanton (bass)
Nic Cecire (drums)
