NEXT TO NORMAL

Event Date: 08/01/2015, 08:00 pm

Pulitzer Prize & Tony Award winning Hit Broadway Musical
Boasting the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and three Tony Awards including best musical score, Doorstep Arts in association with Hayes Theatre Co willpresent Next to Normal at Hayes Theatre Co from Thursday 8 January after a wildly successful season in Geelong earlier this year.

With poignant lyrics and a powerful contemporary rock score, Next to Normal is an insightful and fiercely honest story of love, loss and family life. Reprising her critically claimed role, Natalie O’Donnell (Mamma Mia, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), leads a superb cast as Diana, a troubled woman in danger of being engulfed by her past. Cathartic and ultimately uplifting, Next to Normal challenges us to ask the question, ‘What is normal?’
Joining Natalie in the cast are some of Australia’s finest musical theatre talent including Anthony Harkin (Avenue Q, Shane Warne The Musical), Alex Rathgeber (An Officer And A Gentleman, Fiddler on the Roof), Brent Trotter (Jersey Boys, Four Seasons In One Night), Kiane O’Farrell (Carrie: The Musical, 42nd Street) and Clay Roberts (CATS, Thoroughly Modern Millie).

Playing its Sydney professional premiere, Next to Normal was rated the Theatre People’s Choice for the number one production over its two-week Geelong season and Director Darylin Ramondo is excited to introduce this critically acclaimed production to a Sydney audience.

Frances Madden - Album Launch

Event Date: 06/12/2014, 08:30 pm

One of Sydney’s most exciting & in-demand ‘popular jazz’ artists
Frances has become one of Sydney’s most exciting and in-demand ‘popular jazz’ artists.

Described by ABC Classic FM’s Mal Stanley as ‘one to watch’, Frances is a sophisticated and classy vocalist, pianist and original songwriter.

Frances’ original songs, whether up-tempo swing, blues or ballads, have a natural fresh quality and universal charm that connects with her growing audience. Her distinctive interpretation of classics and jazz standards often goes beyond genre, reinforcing both her unique sound and a broad ‘adult contemporary’ appeal.

Frances regularly performs with her band at Sydney’s leading jazz venues - this is her second performance at Foundry616. Her band includes some of Australia’s finest up-and-coming young jazz musicians including 2014 Wangaratta Festival finalist Peter Koopman on guitar, James Heazlewood-Dale on double bass and Tim Geldens on drums. They attracted and thrilled a large crowd at the recent Manly Jazz Festival.

Frances grew up listening to Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Eva Cassidy and Ella Fitzgerald who she acknowledges amongst her influences. She studied classical piano while at school, later moving to contemporary music and jazz, and taking up singing after she finished. She then completed a Degree in Music Performance at the Australian Institute of Music. Since graduating at the end of 2010, Frances has established herself as a viable professional performing artist.

What if Memory and Dream fell in love, and left you stranded in a vortex of uncertainty, spiked with just enough clues to drag you deeper into corridors of familiar doors with no handles.

Where sleeping and waking are lucky guesses at best, and the world rests on the tip of your tongue, defying you to name it. Further you fall, like a tiny piece of puzzle in the wrong jigsaw, searching for the edge of recognition, until it turns its back completely, and the shape that is you collapses into space. An edgeless, endless space that can’t quite touch the universe.
You exist only in the memory of others.
Tell Me Again is a story from a netherworld where fact meets fiction and strangers know your name.

Plays 10th - 21st December Wednesday - Saturday 8 pm, Sunday 7 pm

Elodie Sablier CD Launch

Event Date: 05/12/2014, 08:30 pm

Elodie Sablier - CD launch "Silent Bridge"
"In Australia, Elodie Sablier has found a new music - individual, intimate and frequently exquisite" is how French Pianist and Composer Elodie Sablier was recently described by the Sydney Morning Herald.

For the launch of her new album, Silent Bridge, Elodie Sablier's performance at the Foundry616 is bringing together her exquisite piano composition and performance skills.

Blessed with technique from the best French Conservatoires, and with the influence of several years on the Sydney jazz and alternative music scene, Elodie delivers a touching honesty in her sound that pushes the boundaries of classical music in her own inimitable style.

For this particular occasion, Elodie will be playing some of her compositions accompanied by extracts of movies, many of which have been key sources of inspiration for her album.

Elodie's music is a thing of great beauty, and the performance of this young talented composer promises to be nothing short of enchanting.

BALMAIN SINFONIA

Event Date: 07/12/2014, 02:30 pm

Brahms, Dvorak and Mendelssohn
The Balmain Sinfonia concludes its stellar 2014 season with an extraordinary reunion with international violin sensation SUSIE PARK.

The Sun 7th December concert takes place at 2.30pm at Macquarie Theatre, Macquarie University and is sure to win hearts and touch musical souls.

In 1995, a barely known Sydney teenager named Susie Park won the Balmain Sinfonia Concerto Competition (and the Richard Goldner Award), stunning the judges with her performance of the Wieniawski Violin Concerto No. 2. She went on to play that concerto with the Sinfonia in a full, major concert program and equally stunned the audience with her brilliant but mature interpretation. Her career overseas has since been stellar – Vienna, New York, Boston, Copenhagen and many more of the world’s iconic concert halls.

Now, she returns to Sydney to headline the Sinfonia’s final concert for 2014 featuring in Brahms’ sublime Violin Concerto. The program also includes Mendelssohn’s wonderfully tuneful Ruy Blas Overture and Dvořák’s sweeping Symphony No. 6.

SWEENEY TODD

Event Date: 04/12/2014, 07:30 pm

The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
SWEENEY TODD
BOOK BY HUGH WHEELER
MUSIC & LYRICS BY STEPHEN SONDHEIM

“Dark, nightmarish and thrilling, a masterpiece”
The Telegraph (UK)

Sweeney Todd has long been on New Theatre’s wish-list, so we’re really excited that it’s coming to our stage as the last production for our 2014 season. Sydney is in the midst of a surge of creativity when it comes to independently produced musicals, with companies such as The Hayes Theatre Co, Luckiest Productions, Wooden Horse and Squabbalogic bringing to life a treasure trove of riskier, less frequently produced work and diversifying the theatrical landscape.

The talented ensemble includes recent AIM Music Theatre graduate Erin Bogart, Briony Burnes, Jamie Collette (Privates on Parade), Daisy Cousens, Carl Olsen and Steven Richie (Fiddler on the Roof featuring Topol, Melbourne).
