A new play from Brave New Word
A new play from Brave New Word, performing at the Exchange Hotel, Balmain.

Zoe is an artist, who lives with her sisters Kate and Ella. Their house quickly moves from peaceful to tense, can be very uncomfortable to live in, and they often go without speaking for days (three weeks being their personal best).

When Zoe wins a photography competition and the prize is a trip to Paris for two, both her sisters feel entitled to go with her… and are willing to prove it.

High-level manipulation is at play and old wounds are opened, closed and re-opened again, just to be sure. As Zoe's sisters move in for the kill in ways that only family can, the only possible conclusion they can find is to decide through a game of Monopoly. A game of chance seems only fair... but these three have never played by the rules.

Audiences are invited to come early and enjoy a meal and a drink at the Exchange before the show!

Urban Gypsies Quartet have been performing for over 15 years at numerous concerts, festivals, clubs and special events. They have supported Buena Vista Social Club, Cassandra Wilson, and many more world famous acts.

Urban Gypsies Quartet are an instrumental Jazz/Latin/contemporary band featuring nylon string guitars, cello and percussion. They represent an exciting direction in Latin / jazz mixed with world music influences, exploring a wide range of styles and genres from breezy Bossa Novas to fiery improvised virtuosity. Each instrumentalist is a master of his medium and the results are imaginative, mesmerising and highly evocative.

In the parochial backwater of Dublin, Missouri, where life revolves around the cheese factory, the fundamentalist church and the community theatre, book-keeper Ruth lands the title role in a production of George Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan.

When a prominent local businessman is violently killed, Ruth suspects foul play. She begins a determined quest to uncover the truth of his death, pitting her in direct conflict with powerful forces and unconsciously mirroring the character she is playing on stage: Shaw’s crusading, fearless Joan of Arc.

With echoes of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, the films of David Lynch and the poetic naturalism of Tennessee Williams, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lanford Wilson digs deep into the moral degeneracy of a small town, balancing comic observation and dramatic conflict with lyrical and politically-charged storytelling to illuminate the disparate ways people behave at a moment of crisis.
