BIJOU

Event Date: 17/08/2016, 08:00 pm

BIJOU: A Cabaret of Secrets and Seduction starring Chrissie Shaw
Enjoy a winter evening in a cosy Parisian bar, as exotic, aging - but still irresistible - BIJOU and her wonderful pianist spin a musical tale.
Fresh from critical and popular Melbourne and Canberra seasons and a regional NSW tour, Chrissie Shaw is Bijou!
You’re transported to a café-bar in Paris 1933. A wine, a chat; the music plays… there’s a new face in the crowd.
A ravaged figure enters, dressed in faded finery and fake pearls and the evening takes an unexpected turn.
‘Bijou’, former Queen of the Demi-Monde, unleashes a cascade of intimate, colourful memories, taking us back in time to the shadows of her youth.
Bijou survives a hard world by constantly reinventing herself: a young ingénue on the stage of the Paris Varietees;
a high-class courtesan; the hard-bitten madame of a highly imaginative house of joy;
a vulnerable child at the mercy of the adults around her… Bijou takes us on a rollicking journey and emerges triumphant!

This sumptuous, funny, poignant – often dark - cabaret peeps into the private, sensual world of a riveting Parisienne d’un certain age.
She is one of the night people, as captured in Brassai’s iconic and revealing photographs of depression-era Paris.
Featuring the music of Satie, Weill, Hollander, Bruant and more, there is sex, romance, violence, wonderful costumes, passion and poetry.
And, above all, exquisite music.

Chrissie Shaw, award-winning theatre veteran, is a Canberra-based performing artist and writer.
She has produced eight of her own shows, winning Critics’ Circle and Greenroom Awards.
“Bijou” is her latest work, which had two successful seasons at The Street Theatre in Canberra, and has toured to regional NSW
and most recently a highly successful season in Melbourne’s La Mama Courthouse Theatre.

In Bijou, Chrissie collaborates with a whole host of local and national talent including award-winning musician and educator lan Hicks.

Seussical!

Event Date: 19/08/2016, 08:00 pm

This bright and colourful musical will be bringing the magical characters of Dr Seuss to the stage
“After all of those years being stuck on a page, did you ever imagine you’d see me on stage?” – Cat in the Hat

After its spectacular debut with Hot Shoe Shuffle (starring Daryl Somers) and the sell-out success of cheeky Keating and sassy teen hit 13, Sydney’s freshest musical theatre company Birdie Productions is set to explode with more big name stars and more young talent in SEUSSICAL!

And featuring in the leading roles will be Aria award-winning (and current Logie nominee) the iconic star of stage and screen
‘Yellow Wiggle’ SAM MORAN and captivating Matilda star BELLA THOMAS.
SEUSSICAL is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty
(Lucky Stiff, My Favourite Year, Once On This Island, and Ragtime) have lovingly brought to life everyone’s favourite Dr. Seuss characters,
including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie - and a little boy with a big imagination: Jojo.
"Oh, the Thinks You Can Think" captures the show's spirit of imagination, as the colourful characters transport us from
the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

The story of SEUSSICAL centres around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge – not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.
Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping - and even a trial - the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him;
she is the only one who recognises “his kind and his powerful heart”.
The powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged – and ultimately emerge triumphant - in a wonderful musical story that will make you laugh and cry.

Australian Choral Grand Prix

Event Date: 21/08/2016, 02:30 pm

Presented by Sydney Eisteddfod & Rotary Club of Sydney Cove
First presented to audiences back in 2013, the Australian Choral Grand Prix is one of the most diverse and engaging events held annually by Sydney Eisteddfod.

Hosted this year by the talented presenter Andrew O’Keefe, audiences can delight in this amazing showcase of some of Australia’s best choral performers, as choirs compete for top honours in both the People’s Choice and Jury Vote categories.

Sydney Eisteddfod and the Rotary Club of Sydney Cove present an event with outstanding choristers selected from the Youth and Open categories of The John Lamble Foundation Australasian Choral Championships in June, who now compete for a total prize pool that exceeds $20,000.

Finalists will present a program that includes a work by an Australian composer or arranger. AlI Finalists are strongly encouraged to give thought to choralography and entertainment aspects in their chosen program.

The Fort Street High School Chamber Choir were the undisputed victors last year winning both the Jury Vote and the People’s Choice awards. The choir also took won in 2014, which poses the question: who will take the trophy this year?
The total performance time for each finalist is 12 minutes. One choir will receive a prize of $1000 for the best work by an Australian composer or arranger.

Refugees are “dirty skunks”. Thrown into processing centres, they face deportation at a moment’s notice. Teams scour the country searching for skunks and the ‘handlers’ protecting them. Informers are everywhere. In one night the masks and motivations of skunks and handlers alike are stripped away. The ending will surprise and subvert audience assumptions.
