Event Date: 23/07/2017, 07:30 pm

Led by the conductor Zhou Wen, over 40 talented musicians will play a series of famous Chinese music
Led by the conductor Zhou Wen, over 40 talented musicians will play a series of famous Chinese music.

In a unique display unlike any other orchestral performance, the internationally acclaimed Hubei Chime Bells National Chinese Orchestra brings The Imperial Bells of China - Chimes in Concert to Australia.

Together with Bianqing (stone-chime) and other ancient instruments, like se, chi, drum and banjo, chime bells are the earliest twelve-tone equal temperament instruments in the world and have major cultural and historical values.

Led by the conductor Zhou Wen, over 40 talented musicians will play a series of famous Chinese music at the concerts. The use of the precise replicas of these ancient Chinese bells creates an authentic melodious timbre sound. The grand occasion of the Chinese palace symphony orchestra will be recreated and the ancient Jingchu people’s artistic lifestyle will be reproduced on stage.

Not only is the sound of the bells filled with romantic and sonorous melodies but they are also visually breathtaking due to their grand scale and elaborate cast technique. The Imperial of China represents a ritual in China’s outbound cultural exchanges, it has been performed in front of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Egyptian Present Abdel Fattah, the king and queen of Belgium and many more during the official visits and all across 57 countries and regions for more than 1000 times.

For one show only on 23 July at Sydney Opera House.

Tasty Sunday Afternoon Concert

Event Date: 20/07/2017, 02:30 pm

The myth of ‘no female composers’ will be exploded – in style! – in a wonderful winter afternoon con
The myth of ‘no female composers’ will be exploded – in style! – in a wonderful winter afternoon concert on Sunday 30 July when Ensemble Vinifera makes its appearance in the popular Prelude in Tea series at the Independent Theatre.
The monthly concerts featuring outstanding chamber musicians include refreshments - and a delectable selection of cakes!

“Why are there so few female composers?” It’s a question that resurfaces regularly and yet, there are in fact many first-rate female composers; this concert will feature works from several, spanning the early 19th century through to the present day.
The feature work is Ensemble Vinifera's first commissioned work from Sydney composer Jessica Wells.
Vinifera will also be performing works by contemporary American composer Libby Larsen as well as Nadia Boulanger, Rebecca Clarke, Clara Schumann (student and wife of Robert) and Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel (brother of Felix and considered a child prodigy of similar stature).

Ensemble Vinifera features Andrew Wilson (cello), Ella Brinch (viola) and John Lewis (clarinet).
The group was created in 2013 by several Sydney musicians who regularly perform together in the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.
Based around a core group of Viola, Cello and Clarinet, Vinifera metamorphoses as required to perform anything from solo Bach to octets for mixed winds and strings.
The ensemble is inherently flexible, playing music from a wide variety of eras, genres and national backgrounds across a broad palette of instrumental combinations.

The musicians particularly enjoy bringing less frequently seen groupings, composers and works to Australian audiences.

Guest artists for this concert include Christina Wilson (mezzo-soprano), Ewan Foster (violin),
Naremburn's Lisa Osmialowski (flute) and Azumi Lehmann (harp) with Alan Hicks (piano)
