Sydney Comedy Festival - Daniel Townes: The...

Event Date: 06/05/2018, 07:15 pm

Daniel Townes returns to Sydney Comedy Festival with a red hot brand new show.
Please note if you take this Quick Tix you are not eligible to enter the free draw for the show.

Daniel Townes returns with a brand new show about the current divide in our society, equality, fearmongering, offence, Batman, and a load of other things that sound hilarious when you put the word comedy next to them.

As well as being a regular at Comedy Festivals all over Australia, Townes has performed at the prestigious invite-only Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, and won over audiences worldwide with his disarming delivery, dry wit, and cheeky smile: headlining and hosting at comedy clubs throughout the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, Spain, Ireland, South Africa, Canada, The Netherlands, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha.

As seen on ABC2 Comedy Next Gen and Comedy Up Late, and the Just For Laughs Australia Stand-up Series filmed live at The Sydney Opera House.

“Daniel Townes is a small-name comedian with a big talent. It feels like you’re sitting down with a mate, discussing the ridiculousness of life. Townes is genuinely funny, I highly recommend him to anyone tired of seeing big names coast on their reputations.” - The Age

“Pound for pound, one of the best Australian stand-ups going around. The fact that his name might not be familiar is entirely your fault. He is that good. It’s like spending an hour with a mate who’s funnier, warmer and more intelligent than the ones you’ve already got." - GQ Magazine 2017

“Special mention to Daniel Townes’ laid-back, one-liner comedy for making stand-up look so easy, anyone can do it, right?” - The Music 2016

“This highly personal and honest reflection is a touching journey interspersed with top-mark laughs, clever call-backs and acerbic social commentary.” - Herald Sun 2014

“There wasn’t one joke from Townes that didn’t receive a massive response.” - Midwest Times

“Daniel Townes is a fine example of interesting, intelligent and hilarious stand-up.” - rhum.org.au

Tales Of The Silk Road - Melbourne

Event Date: 08/05/2018, 07:30 pm

Experience the majesty in a one night only performance at Melbourne Recital Hall
Distinguished Pipa (Chinese Lute) master Zhang Hong-Yan together with over 30 top-level musicians from the Plucked-String Orchestra of China Central Conservatory of Music will make their Australian debut in Tales of the Silk Road. Experience the majesty in a one night only performance at Melbourne Recital Hall on Tuesday 8 May.

Combining folk music along the Silk Road and contemporary dance, the concert brings together the Pipa, Chinese traditional percussions and exquisite stage decoration, giving audiences an unforgettable multi-dimensional artistic experience. The concert explores wide-spread Chinese masterpieces with strong ethnic features including Spring of Tian Mountain, Cockfight and Tales of the Silk Road.

During a Uygur tour in 2002, Zhang discovered that both the Pipa and Chinese traditional percussion originated from the Western Region (Uygur regions and part of central Asia), and was inspired to bring the instruments back together in concert.

Pipa, also known as the Chinese lute, is a four-stringed Chinese musical instrument, considered the king of plucked instruments. With a pear-shaped wooden body, Pipa has a number of frets ranging from 12 to 26, and dates back to the Han dynasty (around 2nd century AD). With a 2000-year history, Pipa is one of the most popular Chinese instruments, shaping ancient Chinese singing and dancing and a symbol of Chinese traditional culture.

Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again.

Event Date: 03/05/2018, 08:00 pm

“Each scene ...begins with deconstruction and proceeds into detonation”
In Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. UK writer Alice Birch skewers the language and semiotics of both patriarchy and feminism in a play which is equal parts belly-laugh funny and gut-wrenchingly real.

She tears apart the structures that keep feminism and women trapped inside a patriarchal system, and presents a rallying cry for a new feminism; to work outside the system and re-redefine the way we think about womanhood.

Women take their rightful place, centre stage: becoming the aggressor in seductions, demanding what they want from work, trashing supermarkets and with them the fragile masculine ego.

Packed with intelligence, humour and wrenching social commentary, House of Sand bring its signature visceral performance style to a Revolt that is a punch in the face wrapped in a satin glove.
Based on conversations with more than 80 Australian women across a range of socio-economic, cultural, religious, sexuality and gender backgrounds, this new production will resonate deeply with local audiences.

Charles and Eliza Sanders’ award-winning House of Sand creates madcap, visceral performance work
with a signature expressionistic style in and across art forms including theatre, dance, cabaret and visual & performance art.
Directed by Charles and featuring Eliza, Revolt also features the talents of Violette Ayad, Anna Cheney, Enya Daley, Richard Hilliar and Moreblessing Maturure.

Sylph

Event Date: 25/04/2018, 08:00 pm

SYLPH by Jodi Rose “Immortality has a price tag
SYLPH is about Marie Taglioni, known for her chaste, ethereal, sylph-like qualities on stage. But her private life was grounded in affairs with lovers from royalty to the arts, as well as struggles with power, disadvantage and manipulation. The play draws on the older Marie’s experiences and recollections. Jodi Rose (playwright), Gertraud Ingeborg (actor) and Colleen Cook (director and designer) are not so different in age from the mature Marie Taglioni. This team of three formidable women have worked together closely throughout the whole process of bringing this one-woman show to life.
