Event Date: 07/06/2018, 07:00 pm

Stellar cast assembled for Sydney Opera House season of ASSASSINS
The Sydney Opera House has announced the final cast members for its upcoming production of the critically-acclaimed musical Assassins. After a sold-out season at the Hayes Theatre Co, which received widespread critical praise and multiple nominations in last year’s Sydney Theatre Awards, this darkly entertaining, revue-style musical arrives at the Sydney Opera House’s Playhouse in June.
As previously announced, reprising the role of John Wilkes Booth, earning him the 2017 Sydney Theatre Award for Best Male Actor in a Leading Role, is acclaimed actor, singer and showman David Campbell (Dream Lover). Joining him in the role of Sam Byck is Anthony Gooley, awarded ‘Best Actor in an Independent Production’ (2011 Sydney Theatre Awards). Playing the role of Giuseppe "Joe" Zangara is Luigi Lucente, most recently seen on Sydney stages in Muriel’s Wedding and leading the cast in the Australian Premiere of Dogfight at the Hayes Theatre Co. The final cast announcement is Sydney Theatre Award winner Madeleine Jones (Muriel’s Wedding, Ladies in Black) who will play the role of Emma Goldman.
Set in a fairground shooting gallery, the Tony Award-winning Assassins tells the story of nine misfit Americans who killed (or planned to kill) their President-of-the-day. The genius of America’s greatest musical-theatre composer and lyricist, Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods) combines with John Weidman’s book, exploring the disillusionment associated with patriotic idealism. Deploying a dose of absurd humour and a century of musical pastiche, Assassins dissects the motivations of some of history’s most notorious criminals.
Continuing their roles from the critically-acclaimed Hayes Theatre Co season are Connor Crawford (The Sound of Music, City of Angels), Hannah Fredericksen (Dream Lover, Heathers), Kate Cole (Ladies in Black, Sweet Charity), Bobby Fox (Jersey Boys, Blood Brothers), Jason Winston - formerly known as Jason Kos - (Cabaret, Miracle City),

The Seraphim Trio Present: NUMBER ONES

Event Date: 27/05/2018, 02:30 pm

Award-winning Australian ensemble, the Seraphim Trio return to the Independent Theatre
Part of the popular Prelude in Tea series that always includes a sumptuous selection of cakes and refreshments, this performance features a Schumann and Jankowski Trio No 1 - as well as Mozart’s No 2!

The piano trio may have been a late comer to chamber music repertoire but Mozart's Trio in G major - his first serious chamber work - is thrilling. The composer’s classical style is echoed in Schumann's late foray into the genre and his first trio is lovingly and meticulously prepared as a present for his wife Clara's 28th birthday, unfolding with grandiosity and romanticism.
Between these two, Seraphim is delighted to give the world premiere of Jakob Jankowski's Piano Trio No.1,
generously commissioned by Graham Abbott.

Over the last two decades, Seraphim - Helen Ayres, Anna Goldsworthy and Tim Nankervis - have remained steadfastly committed to chamber music.
Winners of the Piano Trio Prize and the Audience Choice Award at the Australian National Chamber Music Competition in 2001, Seraphim Trio has regularly performed at the Melbourne International Arts Festival, the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival, the Adelaide Festival of Arts, the Peninsular Summer Music Festival and in 2013, Opera Australia's Ring Festival in Melbourne.
Alongside its acclaimed subscription series, Seraphim Trio is frequently broadcast on ABC Classic FM
and on the MBS network and maintains a robust commissioning program.

Seraphim frequently collaborates with Australia's leading musicians: most recently Diana Doherty, Paul Dean, Lisa Harper-Brown and David Elton. The group has studied in Germany with Hatto Beyerle and in Australia with William Hennessy,
Eleonora Sivan, Mark Mogilevski, Ronald Farren-Price and Lois Simpson.

Don't miss this delightful - and tasty - musical treat!

The Walworth Farce

Event Date: 19/05/2018, 07:30 pm

The Walworth Farce is a wild exploration
Dinny has kept his two boys Sean and Blake locked away from the dangers of the world in a tiny flat on Walworth Road, South London ever since bringing them from Ireland as young boys. He endlessly forces them to perform a farce at 11am every morning which is the story of their final day in their homeland. But as the outside world begins to infiltrate their seclusion and cracks begin to appear in Dinny’s version of events, the blurry line between truth and lies threatens to tear the family apart.
Equal parts hilarious, menacing, absurd, terrifying, tender, violent and deeply moving, Enda Walsh’s The Walworth Farce is a wild exploration into what can happen when we get stuck inside the stories we tell. Because in the end ... what are we if we’re not our stories?
Workhorse Theatre Company has assembled a wonderfully talented cast and creative team for their production of The Walworth Farce, which plays at Kings Cross Theatre from 17 May. The acting ensemble includes Rachel Alexander (new graduate of The Actors Centre making her professional debut) as Hayley, Laurence Coy (The Removalists, The Night Alive) as Dinny, Robin Goldsworthy (Look Back In Anger, All My Sons) as Blake and Troy Harrison (The Motherf**ker with the Hat, Savages) as Sean. The Walworth Farce is directed by Kim Hardwick (The Shifting Heart, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), with set and costume design by Isabel Hudson (The Shadow Box, The View UpStairs), lighting design by Martin Kinnane (The Shifting Heart, New Year’s Eve Harbour Bridge effects 2000-2007) and sound design by Benjamin Freeman (Sydney Theatre Award winner for 4:48 Psychosis).
Producers Zoe Trilsbach and Troy Harrison are thrilled to present this deceptively old-fashioned high farce.

A Midsummer Nights Dream

Event Date: 18/05/2018, 08:00 pm

MAGIC, MUSIC, LAUGHTER & LOVE IN JOYFUL SHAKESPEARE A Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Guild Theatre
Deep in a woodland clearing, enter a mysterious fairyland and a time of myth & legend where anything is possible… and nothing is it what it seems!

It’s almost 40 years since The Guild presented a Shakespeare play… and director Susan Stapleton knows it’s well overdue.
Stapleton’s own dream of staging this magical Shakespearean classic goes back to her years of studying the Bard at University, including a course at Cambridge in England.

It’s the personal quality of Shakespeare’s work that fascinates Susan:

“He can be very cheeky and bawdy yet, as a poet, frames his ideas in such beautiful imagery that you can’t help but see into the human soul.
"The fact that this insight is over 400 years old – yet both timeless and universal - makes it all the more intriguing.
"I’m so very excited and can’t wait to share it with our audiences,” Susan adds.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is outwardly about the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, Duke of Athens to Hippolyta,
Queen of the Amazons. Into this ceremonial period come two other pairs of lovers - each young, silly… and ripe for adventure.
They stumble into a parallel world of mischievous fairies and wood sprites with a quarreling king and queen of their own.
Add a troupe of bumbling tradies (“rough mechanicals”) looking to court favour by presenting a play at the royal wedding… and you have all the ingredients for a thrilling, mystical, romantic and hysterical adventure - all in one!

The Dream is Shakespeare’s funniest and most accessible play and will delight both devotees of The Bard and audience members less familiar with his works.
The cast are a wonderful combination of young and more senior members of the Guild Theatre (from 18 to 82!) all brim-full of energy to capture the playful wit and fantasy of the play.

Step into the forest be swept up in a dreamy world of rousing medieval music, mysterious, atmospheric sets and elaborately costumed performers.

The Guild Theatre’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream from 18 May.

Classical Melodies: Timeless And Thrilling

Event Date: 18/05/2018, 07:30 pm

The AUSTRALIAN ROMANTIC & CLASSICAL ORCHESTRA continues its 2018 season in May.
The Classical Melodies tour invites listeners to discover the distinctive colours of 18th and 19th century instruments in a chamber music setting. The ARCO Chamber Soloists present two works for strings – Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik and Beethoven’s ‘Storm’ Quintet – and introduce two lesser-known works from the same period – an octet for winds and strings by German opera composer Peter von Winter and a wind quartet by Italian Vincenzo Gambaro. This program is a wonderful opportunity to hear up-close how the delicate qualities of the earlier wind instruments – flute,
clarinet, bassoon, horn – enhance the tonal breadth of the gut strings.
To bring this music to life with these instruments, the ARCO Chamber Soloists comprises specialist
musicians from around the world. Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra’s concertmaster
Rachael Beesley is joined by principal violinist Jakob Lehmann from Berlin, and Paris-based Deirdre
Dowling teams up with Simon Oswell on violas, along
with cellist Natasha Kraemer and double-bassist Kirsty
McCahon. Flautist Pablo Sosa del Rosario and bassoonist Takako Kunugi – both based in The Hague – join the orchestra’s principal clarinettist Nicole van Bruggen, augmented by natural horn specialists Anneke Scott from London and Graham Nichols.
There will be a pre-concert talk at 6:45 pm
