Tang Xianzu The Playwright In Concert - Melbou...

Known as the Shakespeare of the East, TangXianzu is considered China’s greatest playwright.
Over 100 talented musicians from the Symphony Orchestra and Opera of Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SHCM) will make their Australian debut in Tang Xianzu the Playwright in Concert on Sunday 7 April in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall.

Known as the Shakespeare of the East, TangXianzu is considered China’s greatest playwright. Tang is most famous for the Four Dreams—four works originally adapted to be performed as traditional Chinese operas (known as kunqu).

TWO HIP-HOP ARTISTS SPIN STORIES OF CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIA
Two trailblazing stars of the Australian music scene, Joelistics and James Mangohig, will present a vibrant, contemporary portrayal of the Asian Australian experience in their critically-acclaimed production, In Between Two.

The show is being presented at Riverside Theatres from 28th to 30th March and by Monkey Baa at the ARA Darling Quarter Theatre from 4th to 5th April.

Written, composed and performed by Joelistics and James Mangohig, In Between Two tells their respective stories of being half-Asian, growing up in Australia, and feeling stuck between two cultural worlds.

The pair lovingly paint a canvas of their family histories which are as complex and layered as their lyrics – filled with failed proposals and religious strictures, casual racism and empowerment. Their sharp and provocative hip-hop, rap and instrumental music is combined with compelling storytelling and projected image, to explore the forces that have helped shape their way.

Two icons of the Australian hip-hop scene, James Mangohig is an ARIA-nominated producer, and Joelistics is best known as the founder of award-winning hip-hop group, TZU.

Produced by Contemporary Asian Australian Performance, In Between Two is directed by Suzanne Chaundy and developed with master storyteller William Yang and writer Annette Shun Wah (co-directors of Life Giving Stories, Stories East & West and Riverside’s National Theatre of Parramatta’s Who Speaks for Me?).

Chaundy said, "What has struck me most in the discussion around the development of this work is that this is an Australian story so far away from any other Australian story I’ve seen on our stages, and is a true reflection of the multitude of diverse histories that make up our country in the 21st Century."

One of Australia’s premier chamber ensembles, the STREETON TRIO, present a delightful afternoon
From Beethoven’s good-natured piano trio in E flat to the broad B major trio of Brahms, this program (which includes the theatre’s famously scrumptious afternoon tea) explores the many moods of summer.
Book-ending the hearty classics are Kats-Chernin’s Butterflying, Sculthorpe’s evocative Night Song and Piazzola’s Buenos Aires Summer.

The trio’s namesake, Arthur Streeton’s ‘Golden Summer, Eaglemont’ has become one of
the defining images of Australian art and the Streetons explore the many facets of summer in this evocative program.
Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E flat is one of his most good-natured chamber works, while the Brahms opus 8 trio,
written early in his life and later extensively revised, is hugely popular for its broad lyricism and sweeping romantic gestures.
Elena Kats-Chernin’s Butterflying, originally for children’s choir, is heard here in a delightful trio arrangement.
Sculthorpe’s Night Song, in his own words, “is concerned with solitary thoughts at night, while becalmed on a distant sea”.
And finally, Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons, are a homage to Buenos Aires, Piazzola’s hometown, and the city that gave tango to the world. "Summer" (Verana Porteno) depicts the hot, lazy summer days Piazzolla spent in Buenos Aires and is infused with the melodic yearning and rhythmic vitality of the tango.

Up Close and Personal
Melbourne, Sydney & Southern Highlands (NSW) audiences have the opportunity hear some of Australia’s
finest international musicians in intimate chamber music performances this March.

Seven soloists of the magnificent Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra – gathered from interstate and overseas for their Madness & Confrontation and Voyage of Musical Discovery orchestral concerts on 24 and 27 March in Sydney – will also perform a special chamber program in three mouth-watering recitals.
The three performances – at Monash University in Melbourne on Thur 28 March at 1.10pm,
in the Recital Hall West of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music on Fri 29 March at 6.30pm,
and at St Jude’s Church as part of the Bowral Autumn Music Festival on Sat 30 March at 6.30pm –
feature members of the orchestra, based in Queensland, Victoria, NSW, England and Belgium!

A new era of virtuosity on wind instruments swept through late 18th-century Europe, and Giovanni Punto and François Devienne dazzled listeners with their compositions as well as their playing skill.
In historically informed performances (HIP) on authentic reproductions of instruments of the day, the soloists of the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra invite you to discover these remarkable musical treats, in the company of one of Beethoven’s most beloved chamber works.

The final heat week of Short+Sweet features something for every taste: a resurrection app, two wild friends in a nursing home, a first date with alter egos in-tow… and a trio of out-of-town all-female regional plays. With creatives ranging in age from 15 to 87… this is one not to miss!
Is This a Dream? By Wollongong writer Katina Samaras is an all-Illawarra, all-female presentation directed by Lily Christie Daly starring Lillian Woods, Naoise Champion, Annie Roberts and Olivia Harris. Depressed young Lisa enounters a famous trio of heroines: Joan of Arc, Florence Nightingale… and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz!
Roger Reconstituted, written and directed by Short+Sweet favourite Wendy Crew, sees Nancy (Amanda Lieber) bring back her dead husband Roger (Luke Denny) using a special app! Presented by The Performance Crew, this is Wendy’s 9th Short+Sweet play, the 3rd starring Amanda!
The Last Shuffle is likewise a repeat collaboration – this time between 87yo writer Teresa Plane (left) and director Anthony J Langford – who met when she starred in a play he directed in last year’s festival! A palliative care volunteer for 40 years, Teresa’s play is both hilarious and truthful and tells of two nursing home residents with an eye for adventure… and more mischief than that! Writer and part time nursing home recreational therapist Langford directs Mickey Richards and April Pressler.
UK writer Nicky Donovan’s True to You is about an awkward first date when the couple’s alter egos interfere and reveal much more than they intended. Will they help… or hinder? Harriet Hope Street directs and stars with Sebastien Scott.
In the weekend matinee Wildcards section, Riding the Clutch by Central Coast playwright Sally Batley is a delightful piece about a 17yo and her mother on a driving lesson where the GPS leads them into uncharted waters

Saturday Night Fever, which will premiere in Sydney at the Sydney Lyric Theatre from 27 March 2019.
The coveted lead role of Tony Manero has gone to rising star Euan Doidge, Helpmann Award nominated for his role in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, after performing in Les Miserables, A Chorus Line and the Gordon Frost Organisation’s Grease and Legally Blonde. As Stephanie Mangano, the best dancer at the nightclub, will be Melanie Hawkins. Melanie has previously appeared in Singin’ In The Rain, Strictly Ballroom the Musical, King Kong Live on Stage and Rock of Ages.
Tim “Timomatic” Omaji will join the cast of Saturday Night Fever as Monty, the MC at Disco Odyssey 2001, the nightclub where Tony Manero dances every Saturday night. Tim has starred in the musicals Fame, In the Heights and Madiba the Musical. Tony's older brother, Frank Jr., will be played by Stephen Mahy, recently seen in Mamma Mia!, as well as in Miss Saigon and as Kenicke in Grease. Angelique Cassimatis (Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Mack & Mabel, Strictly Ballroom) will play Annette, a neighbourhood girl who longs for a closer relationship with Tony. The troubled Bobby C will be played by Ryan Morgan, a recent NIDA graduate who has appeared on stage in A Town Named War Boy and Ironbound.
Australia’s original disco diva, Marcia Hines, will play the role of The Diva, who performs at Disco Odyssey 2001. Bobby Fox (Jersey Boys, Assassins, Hot Shoe Shuffle) joins the cast as part of the star vocalists alongside Paulini, Natalie Conway and Nana Matapule. Together they will give voice to the much-loved disco Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.
The cast also includes the best dancers working in Australia today - Justin Anderson, Giuliana Carniato, Lachlan Dearing, Lauren Elton, Mitchell Fistrovic, Gaynor Hicks, Elysha Manik, Kiara McGowan, Coby Njoroge, Maddie Peat, Stephen Perez, Erica Stubbs, Lola Thompson, Benjamin Turland and Chris Van Doren.
