She Stoops To Conquer

Event Date: 11/05/2018, 07:30 pm

CLASSIC, BAWDY ROMP FOR NORTH SIDE SEASON
When Marlow mistakes Kate’s house for an inn and treats her father like an inn-keeper, things don’t go so well for him. With her brother causing mischief, her father insulted and her mother plotting a marriage that nobody wants, it’s no wonder Kate has to stoop to conquer!
She Stoops to Conquer belongs to that small group of classic English comedies which not only never go out of fashion, but never fail to delight. Directed by Peter Farmer (Away, The 39 Steps, Shadowlands, Charley’s Aunt), this production is a true delight: a sweet concoction of Goldsmith’s sly language and lovable characters. It’s also a rarity: a comedy that - like Shakespeare’s - has withstood the test of time!

Director Peter Farmer explains why he loves a rarely performed, 250-year-old comedy:

“Simple! She Stoops is full of charm – a quality too seldom seen in theatre today.
Most playwrights turn vanity, egotism and snobbery into bitter social satire but Oliver Goldsmith loves his characters – and so do we.
It’s far more enjoyable to laugh at human frailties without a stern, didactic finger wagged in our faces…
... this play’s infectious fun, happiness and joy echo through the ages.”

Farmer is confident Lane Cove’s “light touch” overcomes the challenge of 18th century language too:
“A charming and spirited performance requires the right balance – and we’ve found it!”

Times change but great characters don’t, he adds.
“They remain lively, real and recognisable: a girl discovering the thrill of independence;
a boy learning from experience that freedom requires courage and self-awareness.
Every complication is resolved and – through the magic of theatre – we share in their triumphs!”

She Stoops to Conquer stars Henry Taylor, Natasha Nogueira, Larissa Turton, Ross Scott, Alison Grace,
Simon Emmerson, Katie Regan, Ross Holohan, Esther Hannan-Moon, Antony Akle & Wills Burke.

It plays at St Aidan’s Performance Space, Longueville Friday to Sunday from 11-26 May.

Kiss Of The Gallery Guard

Event Date: 11/05/2018, 08:00 pm

Amber, you’re famous! Everyone wants to hear more of your plain-speaking, unadorned philosophy of..
Young Amber leaves the outback under a cloud. She makes good in Sydney at the Art Gallery of NSW, then better in London… and even better in New York.
How did she do it? And what happens if she returns to Australia?
This clever new play from the prolific pen of Carol Dance (Future Seekers, Indian Embrace)
breaks the mould of traditional theatre by including piano music, a soirée atmosphere and a most unusual story. Scene Theatre Sydney returns to the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct of Sydney this May with the world premiere of Kiss of the Gallery Guard.
Directed by Murray Lambert with Anna Greig, Kiss of the Gallery Guard stars Cara Severino
(Girls Like That), Eli Saad (Beirut Adrenalin, Asylum, Future Seekers) and Chloe Schwank
(Julius Caesar, Cosi, Comedy of Errors), with pianist Philip Eames.
Kiss of the Gallery Guard is a mystery, a comedy and a romance. This tale of art theft, forgery and the meaning of art is both inspirational and entertaining. Suitable for all ages, it plays Fri-Sun from 11 May to 26 at the Philharmonia Choirs Hall in Walsh Bay.

Troilus and Cressida by William Shakespeare
Set 7 years into the Trojan war, the Greeks are besieging Troy to rescue their beloved Helen. But the war has reached stalemate. The Greeks are quarrelling amongst themselves and the Trojans are debating the value of continuing the war merely for the sake of keeping Helen. Troilus and Cressida deals with the trials of love and war, exploring themes of honour, the gap between myth, legend and reality and ultimately questioning the purpose of our existence. And, of course, there is the thwarted love story of Troilus and Cressida.

Sydney Comedy Festival - Daniel Townes: The...

Event Date: 06/05/2018, 07:15 pm

Daniel Townes returns to Sydney Comedy Festival with a red hot brand new show.
Daniel Townes returns with a brand new show about the current divide in our society, equality, fearmongering, offence, Batman, and a load of other things that sound hilarious when you put the word comedy next to them.

As well as being a regular at Comedy Festivals all over Australia, Townes has performed at the prestigious invite-only Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, and won over audiences worldwide with his disarming delivery, dry wit, and cheeky smile: headlining and hosting at comedy clubs throughout the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, Spain, Ireland, South Africa, Canada, The Netherlands, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha.

As seen on ABC2 Comedy Next Gen and Comedy Up Late, and the Just For Laughs Australia Stand-up Series filmed live at The Sydney Opera House.

“Daniel Townes is a small-name comedian with a big talent. It feels like you’re sitting down with a mate, discussing the ridiculousness of life. Townes is genuinely funny, I highly recommend him to anyone tired of seeing big names coast on their reputations.” - The Age

“Pound for pound, one of the best Australian stand-ups going around. The fact that his name might not be familiar is entirely your fault. He is that good. It’s like spending an hour with a mate who’s funnier, warmer and more intelligent than the ones you’ve already got." - GQ Magazine 2017

“Special mention to Daniel Townes’ laid-back, one-liner comedy for making stand-up look so easy, anyone can do it, right?” - The Music 2016

“This highly personal and honest reflection is a touching journey interspersed with top-mark laughs, clever call-backs and acerbic social commentary.” - Herald Sun 2014

“There wasn’t one joke from Townes that didn’t receive a massive response.” - Midwest Times

“Daniel Townes is a fine example of interesting, intelligent and hilarious stand-up.” - rhum.org.au
