Dresden By Justin Fleming

Event Date: 15/06/2018, 07:30 pm

“That was the hour it all began!”
1838: Richard Wagner writes Rienzi. Seventy years later, a 17-year-old Adolf Hitler witnesses the composer’s extraordinary first opera in performance - and is struck dumb.
For Wagner, it was one of the greatest creative acts known to us. For Hitler, it set in motion the greatest wave of human destruction we have ever seen.
For both, the city of Dresden is their stage.

Justin Fleming’s explosive new play puts passion and power under the microscope through the lens of history and our own horrifying hindsight.
Starring Yalin Ozucelik as Adolf, Jeremy Waters as Richard and Renee Lim as Cosima Wagner,
Dresden is a story of creativity and destruction and the dark side of human inspiration. Of the fork in the road and how far you might travel along it before you are stopped. It is the story of Hitler and Wagner and the woman who connected them through time.
Following sold-out seasons of The Laden Table and Jatinga in 2017, and Visiting Hours in 2018,
bAKEHOUSE Theatre Company is proud to present the world premiere of Justin Fleming's DRESDEN.
Plays 15-30 June

Spretzzatura! Early Italian Baroque Songs...

Event Date: 10/06/2018, 02:30 pm

A Prelude in Tea Concert at the Independent Theatre
In the latest of the popular Prelude in Tea series, The Muffat Collective with guest Anna Sandstrom, soprano
present a mouth-watering Sunday afternoon concert of music by Montiverdi, Caccini, Peri & Rasi.

Featuring the sublime soprano Anna Sandstrom, this program of early Italian Baroque songs & sonatas
explores the Italian concept of Spretzzatura. And, as always in this series, the concert includes a delicious selection of cakes & refreshments with every ticket.

Translated as 'effortless mastery', Spretzzatura encompassed almost all areas of early 17th Century Italian courtly life.
The Grove Music Dictionary describes it as “the true source of grace... revealed in the effortless resolution of all difficulties."
Spretzzatura developed into such a desirable character trait and had infiltrated so many aspects of the Italian court
that by the beginning of the 17th century, the concept informed every arts discipline of the time.

This program features the music of the musical pioneers Montiverdi, Caccini, Peri and Rasi.
Anna Sandstom will sing - with Spretzzatura - popular madrigals of the time, accompanied by the Muffat Project’s strings.
This concert is a rare opportunity to enjoy a special form of music-making, led by 17th century experts,
and to “strike into the very heart of human emotion and awake the passions"!

The Muffat Collective comprises four period instrument specialists: Matthew Greco, Rafael Font-Viera (violins), Anton Baba (cello) and Anthony Abouhamad (harpsichord) who are extremely passionate about performing chamber music from the 17th and 18th century.
All top graduates from The Royale Conservatoire of The Hague and Utrecht, the four have returned to Australia after extensive experience playing with some of Europe's leading Baroque orchestras.
The Collective offers music lovers a genuine and moving experience by sharing incredibly rare
and often unperformed works by forgotten masters.
