Bespoken Word is a monthly fresh new night of wonderful live storytelling & comedy.
Bespoken Word brings together Sydney's most interesting and exciting writers, entertainers and comedians for an evening of hilarious true storytelling!

The first half of the evening, hosted by Kate Iselin, sees our special guests telling short, pre-written stories on a specific theme. The second half of the evening, hosted by John Knowles is a live episode of his successful Comedy Festival show and ABC702 Radio Afternnoon segment 'I Can Top That!'. John and three guests take the stage to tell completely true yet totally unprepared stories inspired by topic suggestions from the audience.

The stories told at Bespoken Word can be shocking, others embarrassing, insightful, sweet or just plain hilarious. It's a smorgasbord of real life adventures and raw revelations with an emphasis on vulnerability, confession and laughter. Staged at the cosy Petersham Bowling Club, known for its welcoming community and artsy offerings, Bespoken Word aims to create a friendly modern version of traditional parlour entertainment.

The Time Machine

Event Date: 12/04/2018, 07:30 pm

A brand-new production of THE TIME MACHINE will be staged in Sydney from Wednesday 11 April 2018
A brand-new production of THE TIME MACHINE will be staged in Sydney from Wednesday 11 April 2018 at the NIDA Playhouse Theatre. Written by Sydney playwright Frank Gauntlett, THE TIME MACHINE is a one-man play based on the novella by HG Wells, the story that heralded a century of science fiction.
Regarded as one of Frank Gauntlett’s finest pieces, THE TIME MACHINE recounts the experiences of the scientist known only as 'Time Traveller', who has spent years perfecting a device which allows him to journey forward in time. When the scientist tests his device, he travels to 802,701 AD and finds humanity seemingly living in balance with nature, but at some cost to itself. With its mix of science fiction and fantasy, this cautionary tale remains a vibrant examination of human kind's place in the bigger scheme of things.
From the producer of the critically-acclaimed productions of Freud’s Last Session and Blonde Poison, this new production sees the incomparable Mark Lee (Gallipoli, A Place To Call Home) reprise the role of ‘Time Traveller’. He follows in the footsteps of a stellar line of Australian actors who have also played the role – Rod Taylor and Guy Pearce. Gareth Boylan directs this irresistible classic.
Travel 800,000 years into an amazing future where horror and wonder mingle in a spectacle not to be missed.
‘From first to last the narrative never lapses’ – Sydney Morning Herald ‘a remarkable work’- The Daily Telegraph
There have been films, TV shows, radio plays, comic books and stage-plays, but this highly anticipated new production of THE TIME MACHINE will show why this is a must see, timeless masterpiece.

Alison's House

Event Date: 04/04/2018, 08:00 pm

Inspired by the life and work of the American poet Emily Dickinson
It is 18 years since Alison Stanhope, the country's foremost poet, died. Now the house she lived in must be sold, but it holds secrets. Does the private life of a public figure belong to the world? It is a question of our time, yet ALISON’S HOUSE, a play from 1930 set on New Year’s Eve in 1899, starts with this very question.

Inspired by the life and work of the American poet Emily Dickinson, in a classic example of life imitating art imitating life, Dickinson’s estate denied Glaspell the use of her name and work.

Motivated by a desire to bring iconic, but neglected plays written by women into contemporary consciousness, ALISON’S HOUSE is an integral part of The Depot Theatre’s 2018 Season.

Short, Sweet And Film

Event Date: 27/03/2018, 07:30 pm

Hot on the heels of the successful international finals in Hollywood last year, the second Sydney ..
Hot on the heels of the successful international finals in Hollywood last year, the second Sydney season is about to get underway.

Since its inception last year, the Short+Sweet Film Festival has attracted record numbers of entries
from filmmakers all over Australia and the world offering a range of genres for films - all under ten minutes.
This year the film festival runs parallel with the theatre festival (see week 5 release attached)
and will showcase a range of local and international movies across four heats running every Tuesday night from 6 March 7.30pm at the Tom Mann Theatre, Surry Hills - culminating in a Finals series over the Easter weekend.

Short+Sweet Founder Mark Cleary said he was committed to delivering “a world class film festival with an A-List Hollywood finale”.
“Over the past year we have presented Short+Sweet Film Festivals in Australia, India, SE Asia
and the Middle East with the winning films presented in LA at a Gala Final,” Cleary said.
The Hollywood screening was partnered by the world-renowned Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre in LA that boasts such Hollywood heavyweights such as Mark Ruffallo, Brad Fisher and Benicio del Toro.

According to its Sydney-based festival director Greg Dolgopolov, the most important aspect of Short+Sweet is to bring local filmmakers together and in direct contact with their audiences.

Short+Sweet Film Sydney screens weekly Tues nights from 6 March 7.30pm
