A double headline theatre extravaganza Back to Back
The worlds of science and theatre will collide at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre with double headline theatre extravaganza Back to Back (15 March – 24 March, 2018). The show will feature How I Saved the Western Black Rhino, an uplifting call to action on wildlife extinction, alongside Everything You Ever Wanted, exploring extreme diet culture.
Presented by Nathan Harrison and Rachel Roberts, the fascinating double bill was produced by Q Theatre, The Joan’s resident theatre program creating unique works for, and from, the heart of Penrith.
“Two shows, one ticket, one great night - what more could you ask for?” said Creative Producer, Nick Atkins. “These fantastic productions blend the best parts of science and theatre into an incredible show that is as entertaining as it is educational.”
How do you save a species from the brink of disappearing forever? How I Saved the Western Black Rhino confronts audiences with a shocking fact: we are in the midst of an extinction crisis rivalling that of the dinosaurs. Featuring an uplifting story of rescuing one of the last Western Black Rhinos in existence, Nathan Harrison’s incredible solo performance explores the complexity of wildlife conservation.
Everything You Ever Wanted is a deeply personal exploration of the touchy subjects of diet culture and disordered eating. Joining the voices of fat activists and scientists before her, future-dietitian-turned-theatre maker Rachel Roberts stars in this captivating show revealing the dark underbelly of dieting.
Tickets are $55 Standard, $50 Concession or $30 for Under 30s.

Comedian Orny Adams is returning to Australia with his new show More Than Loud. Adams first gained the spotlight after co-starring in Jerry Seinfeld’s documentary Comedian, but in the past few years he has become a comedy stand out all his own. A seasoned vet with a fresh voice, Adams has performed on Conan, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and The Late Show With David Letterman multiple times, hosted his own shows for the Travel Channel and has written and performed on two Emmy’s broadcasts. To younger audiences, though, Orny is best known as “Coach Finstock” on the hit MTV show Teen Wolf.

Hot on the heels of the successful international finals in Hollywood last year, the second Sydney ..
Hot on the heels of the successful international finals in Hollywood last year, the second Sydney season is about to get underway.

Since its inception last year, the Short+Sweet Film Festival has attracted record numbers of entries
from filmmakers all over Australia and the world offering a range of genres for films - all under ten minutes.
This year the film festival runs parallel with the theatre festival (see week 5 release attached)
and will showcase a range of local and international movies across four heats running every Tuesday night from 6 March 7.30pm at the Tom Mann Theatre, Surry Hills - culminating in a Finals series over the Easter weekend.

Short+Sweet Founder Mark Cleary said he was committed to delivering “a world class film festival with an A-List Hollywood finale”.
“Over the past year we have presented Short+Sweet Film Festivals in Australia, India, SE Asia
and the Middle East with the winning films presented in LA at a Gala Final,” Cleary said.
The Hollywood screening was partnered by the world-renowned Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre in LA that boasts such Hollywood heavyweights such as Mark Ruffallo, Brad Fisher and Benicio del Toro.

According to its Sydney-based festival director Greg Dolgopolov, the most important aspect of Short+Sweet is to bring local filmmakers together and in direct contact with their audiences.

Week Seven – with 10 short plays nightly
Short+Sweet has spread the popular 10-minute format in theatre, dance, cabaret & comedy across Australia and the globe – with festivals now as far afield as Hollywood, India, Malaysia, Dubai and NZ.
Its Hollywood festival is one of the world’s go-to showcases for new talent on stage and screen.
But the original Sydney theatre festival is now in its 17th year and has a new home in Surry Hills’ Tom Mann Theatre.

Festival director Pete Malicki is a Short+Sweet legend, having written and directed for the fest for well over a decade.
This year S+S will again feature not only the judges’ voting and the People’s Choice audience votes,
but his director’s picks – all heading for the April Gala Finals.

Short+Sweet Week 7 – Thur 15 to Sun 18 March

The short, sharp comedy, romance and drama keeps coming asShort+Sweet enters the penultimate week of heats from 15 March…all heading towards the Finals week from Tues 27 March to Sun 1 April - and the ultimate Gala Awards Finals 5-7 April.

Bespoken Word is a monthly fresh new night of wonderful live storytelling & comedy.
Bespoken Word brings together Sydney's most interesting and exciting writers, entertainers and comedians for an evening of hilarious true storytelling!

The first half of the evening, hosted by Kate Iselin, sees our special guests telling short, pre-written stories on a specific theme. The second half of the evening, hosted by John Knowles is a live episode of his successful Comedy Festival show and ABC702 Radio Afternnoon segment 'I Can Top That!'. John and three guests take the stage to tell completely true yet totally unprepared stories inspired by topic suggestions from the audience.

The stories told at Bespoken Word can be shocking, others embarrassing, insightful, sweet or just plain hilarious. It's a smorgasbord of real life adventures and raw revelations with an emphasis on vulnerability, confession and laughter. Staged at the cosy Petersham Bowling Club, known for its welcoming community and artsy offerings, Bespoken Word aims to create a friendly modern version of traditional parlour entertainment.

In a unique and exciting collaboration, Australia’s premier baritone José Carbó joins forces with spectacular emerging classical guitarists Andrew Blanch and Ariel Nurhadi to form The José Carbó Trio.

Their debut recital L’Heure Exquise (The Exquisite Hour), named after Reynaldo Hahn’s masterpiece, features music by Schubert, Faure, Debussy, Verdi and more, reimagined by the trio for the colourful and original musical setting of voice and two guitars.

It is the latest tasty concert in the Independent Theatre’s popular Prelude in Tea series – which always includes afternoon tea with refreshments and a mouth-watering array of cakes and fruits!

‘The Doll’ explores an unconventional relationship between man and android.
This production, brought to Australian shores for the first time from globally acclaimed Croatian playwright, Miro Gavran, challenges the idea of marriage and commitment in an ever-evolving technology-based society.
The main goal of the drama is to depict a near-future society, in an interesting and creative way, one that will intrigue audiences and leave them questioning. A thought-provoking production, playwright Miro Gavran outlines the struggles of modern, everyday relationships, in an unconventional manner.
From award-winning, and critically acclaimed writer, Miro Gavran comes the robotic romance between man and android. His works include, short stories, fiction and dramas, some of which have been translated into 35 different languages making him the most translated Croatian writer. Constantly exploring human connections and relationships, Gavran challenges both himself and the audience as he explores the seemingly perfect relationship that is lacking a connection, a human one.
Gavran plays with gender stereotypes and expectations. A journey for the pair about self-discovery, proving that there is a lot more to healthy relationships than the physical element.
This production will intrigue the audience with something fresh and innovative. It has the potential to evoke a wide response, exploring the sci-fi world, through robotic relationships and lovers.
