Fiddler On The Roof

Event Date: 21/10/2018, 05:00 pm

Moriah College presents Fiddler on the Roof - October 2018
Fiddler is one of the greatest and most loved musicals of all time, capturing the hearts and imagination of audiences around the world.
It centres on village milkman Tevye, husband to Golde and father of five daughters, attempting to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences in turn-of-the-century Russia encroach upon the lives of the family and the entire village.

Full of humour, warmth, great characters and spectacular, show-stopping numbers like “Tradition”, “If I Were a Rich Man”, “Matchmaker”, “Sunrise, Sunset” and “To Life!”, its premiere (which featured Zero Mostel, Bette Middler, Julia Migenes and Beatrice Arthur among others!) ran to 3000 shows on Broadway. It won nine Tony Awards and has since been performed in almost every country on earth. The Hollywood adaptation starring Topol won 3 Oscars.

Moriah’s production of Fiddler on the Roof promises to be a breathtaking theatrical experience and the perfect event to crown the school’s 75th Anniversary celebrations.

Renowned for spectacular musicals that showcase its talented musicians, vocalists and actors, the school last staged the iconic show in 1994. Then, as now, it was helmed by indefatigable Director of Music and Co-curricular, Roberta Goot OAM.

“Fiddler is the perfect choice,” Goot explains. “It is a beautifully crafted musical. Every song is memorable and it is full of great music and timeless wisdom. It is steeped in ‘traditions’ as we are at Moriah and, more than anything, is a story of family: it speaks to the challenges we all still face in some way – and highlights the need for balance, just like the fiddler!”

This historic production features current students as young as 9 as well alumni, current parents, parents of alumni, staff members, even grandparents!
Rehearsals have been taking place over many months and the level of professionalism, attention to detail, effort and resources employed point to a definitive production.

Evergreen Ensemble presents a stunning concert of baroque and folk music
Evergreen Ensemble presents a stunning concert of baroque and folk music in North Sydney evocatively titled Snow in Summer.
And, with a delicious afternoon tea included, it also launches its gorgeous new album of the same name into the bargain!
The program features the music of Northern Scotland and Scandinavia with ancient vocal and instrumental melodies interspersed with exciting new compositions, inspired by rugged northern landscapes.
Presented by The Independent as part of its hugely popular “Prelude in Tea” Sunday afternoon concert series, guests will enjoy a scrumptious afternoon tea from 2:30pm followed by the sumptuous sounds of Evergreen from 3:30pm.

Winter is a time of solitude but also of festivity and story-telling. This program gives us the space to reflect on the passing of time, the seasons, memories and loves lost
– as well as powerful connections to the land.
Alongside 18th century sonatas you’ll hear arrangements of folk songs: sparse, ambient string textures, plucked notes resonating like stars in a clear night sky and a voice soaring high above.

Evergreen Ensemble features three female musicians from Melbourne - Shane Lestideau (baroque violin), Samantha Cohen (theorbo and baroque guitar), Claire Patti (Celtic harp and voice) together with Sydney viola da gamba virtuoso Jenny Eriksson.
The October 2018 Snow in Summer tour also launches their CD album of the same name.

The Japanese Film Festival (17 Oct. – 2 Dec.) today announced its full program and first two guests for 2018: Australian-born rising star Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool 2), delivers a stellar performance in highlight indie comedy Oh Lucy! and renowned Japanese auteur Isao Yukisada, for his turbulent coming-of-age drama River’s Edge.

The 2018 Festival will showcase 30 features and one fascinating documentary across Canberra (17 – 21 Oct.), Brisbane (24 – 28 Oct.), Perth (31 Oct. – 4 Nov.), Adelaide (9 – 11 Nov.), Sydney (15 – 25 Nov.) and Melbourne (22 Nov. – 2 Dec.).

Each city features carefully curated programming by The Japan Foundation, Sydney, from star-studded drama Yakiniku Dragon and tear-jerking true story The 8 Year Engagement, to viral genre-bender One Cut of the Dead, and one of the latest works from master filmmakers including Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters – winner of the Cannes Palme d'Or in 2018).

The Festival in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra and Perth kicks off with romantic detective mystery DESTINY: The Tale of Kamakura, touted as the live-action version of the Ghibli classic Spirited Away. An adaptation of Ryohei Saigan’s popular Kamakura Monogatari manga series by Takashi Yamazaki (Always: Sunset on Third Street), this modern fairy tale follows a writer into a netherworld of supernatural creatures to save his wife.

Sydney and Melbourne will open with viral microbudget genre-bender One Cut of the Dead. Direct from sold-out screenings across Japan, this action-packed spectacle is a brilliantly-disguised low-budget, high-concept take on the zombie comedy genre. Flowing seamlessly from monster mayhem, to hilarious satire, into a family comedy-drama, Shinichiro Ueda’s debut follows a film crew shooting a zombie flick, during which they are attacked by real zombies.
