Bespoken Word is a monthly fresh new night of wonderful live storytelling & comedy.
Bespoken Word brings together Sydney's most interesting and exciting writers, entertainers and comedians for an evening of hilarious true storytelling!

The first half of the evening, hosted by Kate Iselin, sees our special guests telling short, pre-written stories on a specific theme. The second half of the evening, hosted by John Knowles is a live episode of his successful Comedy Festival show and ABC702 Radio Afternnoon segment 'I Can Top That!'. John and three guests take the stage to tell completely true yet totally unprepared stories inspired by topic suggestions from the audience.

The stories told at Bespoken Word can be shocking, others embarrassing, insightful, sweet or just plain hilarious. CRANSTON CUP Semi Final

Event Date: 11/11/2018, 05:00 pm

Australia's ultimate comedy smack-down!
For over thirty years, the start of the Sydney summer has been marked by the biggest improvised comedy show in Australia.
Six teams of the fastest, finest and funniest improvisers in the country, pit their wits against each other to get their hands on the biggest, ugliest, most prized trophy in competitive comedy… the two metre-high Cranston Cup. This is the first of 2 semi-finals before it comes to a head on Sunday 2 December at the Enmore Theatre for the Grand Final.

Born of humble beginnings in 1985, this wildly popular ‘cult’ impro-comedy show now attracts performers from around the nation and has helped launch the careers of a multitude of well-known actors, comics and comedy writer including Julia Zemiro, Shaun Micallef,
Andrew Denton, Susie Youssef, Steen Raskopoulos, Andrew O’Keefe, Adam Spencer, Ed Kavalee and Rob Carlton.

This year is no different, and features both veteran players and the freshest of comedy faces
including champion high school and university teams who have fought their way through the qualifying rounds!

Already confirmed for the final are Mission Improvable 3 (Elliot Ulm, Jestika Chand & Rachael Colquhoun-Fairweather) and PG13, the intermediate high school team from Newington College – the first ever school team to make a Cranston Grand!

Lake Honghu In Concert - Melbourne

Event Date: 08/11/2018, 07:30 pm

A CLASSIC OPERA ‘THE RED GUARDS ON LAKE HONGHU’
After 60 years of success and more than 3000 shows and now performing for the first time out of China in an Australian first, Hubei Symphony Orchestra of Hubei Provincial Opera and Dance Drama Theatre presents a modern concert production of the classic Chinese opera, Lake Honghu featuring seven principal singers and a chorus of forty.

These milestone concerts will take place at the Sydney Opera House on November 4 with celebrated Australian guest conductor Vanessa Scammell (My Fair Lady, The Merry Widow, South Pacific) and Melbourne Recital Centre led by resident conductor Luo Yilin on November 7 & 8.

The original opera was first performed in 1958 in Wuhan and was staged in Beijing in October 1959. Based on the true story, Han Ying and Liu Chuang led a team of guardians defending their homeland in the scenic Lake Honghu area in the summer of 1930. Interesting to note by means of its famous lake, Honghu City produces forty kinds of fish and an abundance of plants, such as the lotus, reed and a type of lack algae.

Blending western style opera with traditional Chinese and Hubei folk songs and lyrical ballad, the melody is cheerful, full of passion and shows the revolutionary pioneer’s love of the hometown and hope for the happy lives and future. The music structure contains both strength of the Chinese traditional opera and English Opera. The lyrics and the music tell the story and focus on emphasising the character’s internal emotions.

Music from the intimate to the expansive
The widely appreciated Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra is spreading its wings to deliver a concert in the marvellous acoustic of The Concourse which will not fail to leave audiences with a glow of awe and inspiration. The Concourse allows audiences to be part of the full scale orchestral and choral sound experience but up close and personal.

In this concert, four works will be presented by the KPO ranging from the newly minted to the familiar classics. eggshell by local composer and participant in the 2016 KPO Young Composers' Workshops, Kezia Yap, is a beautiful, delicate piece which will touch your emotions. The familiar and virtuosic Variations on a Rococo Theme by Tchaikovsky will be performed by phenomenal prodigy, 13 year old Benett Tsai on cello. Benett takes his place beside many other now famous performers as Outstanding Performer in KPO's 2017 Secondary Schools Concerto Competition, playing the artistically demanding Elgar Cello Concerto.

You will also be immersed in the impressionistic seascapes of Debussy's La Mer, together with Prokofiev's vast epic based on the life of 13th century legendary Russian prince, Alexander Nevsky in which local acclaimed mezzo soprano, Barbara Jin, joins the full choral force of the Willoughby Choir, with an expanded KPO filling the stage, all under the direction of conductor Peter Ellis.
