A Baroque Christmas - Sydney

Event Date: 24/11/2018, 02:30 pm

Magnificent! Transporting! Phenomenal!” - Schwäbische Zeitung
The Australian Chamber Choir is set to thrill audiences in Sydney and Melbourne this Christmas season
with a program of Baroque ‘hits’ to bring seasonal joy to music lovers of all tastes.

Starting in Sydney 24 November in the atmospheric locale and spectacular acoustic of St Mary’s Cathedral Crypt,
the choir continues with four performances in Victoria. At St Andrew’s in Brighton on 8 December,
the audience can experience the results of an acoustic refurbishment that makes heavenly voices sound truly celestial!

In Europe across the centuries, Christmas has been a time when serious composers would compete
to write music with the maximum popular appeal for adults and children alike.
This program represents a “pick of the pops” by the Australian Chamber Choir’s director, Douglas Lawrence:
Bach (In dulci jubilo, Singet dem Herren, O Jesulein süss), Gabrieli, Praetorius, Sweelinck, Schütz and Scheidt.
Douglas Lawrence OAM, a world-class organist, established the ACC in 2007. In its young life, the Choir has already toured Europe six times, giving some hundred concerts to rapturous sell-out audiences and winning unqualified critical acclaim.
With a reputation for its “lucidly articulated” performances of Bach’s Motets, the choir has performed several times in Bach’s church, St Thomas’, Leipzig, including in the Bach Organ Festival.
In 2015, it was hailed in the Danish press under the heading “Australian Choir in the Super League”
and recognized as an honorary life member of Denmark’s oldest classical music festival, the Sorø International.

Australia's ultimate comedy smack-down!
For over thirty years, the start of the Sydney summer has been marked by the biggest improvised comedy show in Australia.
Six teams of the fastest, finest and funniest improvisers in the country, pit their wits against each other to get their hands on the biggest, ugliest, most prized trophy in competitive comedy… the two metre-high Cranston Cup. This is the first of 2 semi-finals before it comes to a head on Sunday 2 December at the Enmore Theatre for the Grand Final.

Born of humble beginnings in 1985, this wildly popular ‘cult’ impro-comedy show now attracts performers from around the nation and has helped launch the careers of a multitude of well-known actors, comics and comedy writer including Julia Zemiro, Shaun Micallef,
Andrew Denton, Susie Youssef, Steen Raskopoulos, Andrew O’Keefe, Adam Spencer, Ed Kavalee and Rob Carlton.

This year is no different, and features both veteran players and the freshest of comedy faces
including champion high school and university teams who have fought their way through the qualifying rounds!

Already confirmed for the final are Mission Improvable 3 (Elliot Ulm, Jestika Chand & Rachael Colquhoun-Fairweather) and PG13, the intermediate high school team from Newington College – the first ever school team to make a Cranston Grand!

The final play in Neil Simon’s quasi-autobiographical trilogy
“Maybe I don’t have to become a writer. I’ll just set up seats in the living room.”

The final play in Neil Simon’s quasi-autobiographical trilogy (preceded by Brighton Beach Memoirs and Biloxi Blues) continues the story of young Eugene Jerome, an aspiring comedy writer with dreams of a career in radio.

It’s 1949 and Eugene and his brother-cum-writing partner are stuck in the wilds of Brooklyn, with their increasingly remote father, disillusioned mother, and unreconstructed socialist grandfather. Meanwhile, their mother’s sister, who has ‘married well’ and now lives the good live on Park Avenue – a betrayal of her working-class roots in the eyes of her father – is attempting to reconcile her and Kate’s parents.

Life in this hard-scrabble, working-class Jewish household is an incessant round of baiting and bickering. But when the boys use their family as fodder for their comedy scripts, they learn early lessons in compassion and artistic integrity.

Simon’s reverie is bittersweet and nostalgic, but never sentimental. He chart’s Eugene’s coming-of-age and the family dynamics with truth, humanity and great humour.

“Simon may be the greatest comedy writer of the 20th century” Chicago Critic

Plays 13 Nov - 15 Dec

Calendar Girls By Tim Firth

Event Date: 16/11/2018, 07:30 pm

A Hunters Hill Theatre production that'll knock your socks off!
A ‘maturing’ group of ladies from the local Women's Institute is desperately looking to raise money for leukaemia awareness.

They come up with the idea of posing for an ‘alternative’ calendar – with just a little help from strategically placed cupcakes and flower pots!

This sentimental play, based on a true story, is full of heart and, well, just a little bare-faced cheek.

***Don't miss this limited run of only 8 performances!***

Hunters Hill Theatre is proudly supporting the Australian Cancer Research Foundation and The Concord Hospital Survivorship Centre with this production of Calendar Girls.
