Backtrack Boys

Event Date: 24/10/2018, 06:30 pm

This observational documentary, filmed over two years, follows boys in a youth program.
NOTE: winners will be asked to nominate the date and time they would like to see the film.

A group of troubled boys are on a perilous course towards jail until they meet up with the rough talking, free-wheeling jackaroo, Bernie Shakeshaft, and hit the road with his legendary dog jumping team.

This observational documentary, filmed over two years, follows boys in a youth program that Bernie runs from a shed on the outskirts of Armidale, a rural town in Australia. On the road, the boys find their voice, make great friendships and the dogs become national champions. But as the boy’s sleep under the stars at night the trauma is never too far away. With their survival and futures at stake they must constantly step up, push themselves, support each other and some days can be hard. This inspiring coming of age story reveals the challenges and triumphs these boys face as they try to find their place in the world, and the dogs that help tame their wild ways.

A life-affirming documentary, Backtrack Boys explores Bernie’s philosophy in action and through the journey of the kids in his care. It reveals how he helps them to navigate their relationships, deal with personal trauma, take responsibility for their own decisions and gain practical job skills so they can eventually create a sustainable future for themselves.

Midnight Oil Armistice Day: Live From The...

Event Date: 24/10/2018, 07:30 pm

Don’t miss Midnight Oil at their explosive, uncompromising best
NOTE winner will pick their tickets up from the box office on the day, so we will ask that you let us know which cinema you will attend and which film showing 24/10 at 7:30 pm or 27/10 at 3 pm.
In February 2017 Midnight Oil embarked on a global journey to circle the globe playing in 16 countries across 5 continents.

Eventually they returned to Australia - the land that shaped the Oils and their music. The tour rolled across the country where this band first cut their teeth, rekindling old memories and creating new ones with every song, and every show.

Finally this epic tour circled back to the city where it all began. The venue? Sydney’s Domain - a place that encapsulates a nation’s history.

And so after 77 gigs to over half a million people around the world this is where The Great Circle would finally come to a close. Two hometown shows in this special place. The first date? November 11. Known to some as Armistice Day.

Don’t miss Midnight Oil at their explosive, uncompromising best on the big screen for 2 days only on October 24 & 27!

THE DIRECTOR By Nancy Hasty

Event Date: 26/10/2018, 07:30 pm

SEDUCTION, COMPLICITY & WHITE-KNUCKLE SUSPENSE
The Director, by US writer Nancy Hasty, is set to open at the Actors Pulse Playhouse in Redfern.
And it’s bound to create intense debate among performers and theatre lovers alike.
In a run-down rehearsal studio in New York, theatre director Peter now works as a janitor
in exchange for being able to use the rehearsal spaces to conduct his 'research into acting'.
After he meets an award-winning playwright, Annie, he reluctantly agrees to direct her new play
after she expresses dissatisfaction with the existing director and the actors that director has cast.

Peter adopts a highly unconventional and controversial approach as he challenges each actor who auditions
to a series of exercises designed to test their abilities and push them to truly ‘live’ their parts.
But how far should he push before someone slips over the edge?
As the line between reality and fantasy blurs, the director becomes a master manipulator,
pulling strings and pushing his vulnerable young protégés.
Is he a genius or a control freak? The ante keeps rising until the game becomes a matter of life and death.
The original production of The Director – starring Emmy Award-winner John Shea - ran off-Broadway for six months in 2000.
It’s no coincidence that Active Theatre Production’s artistic director Simon Doctor is directing and starring in its Australian premiere.
Simon worked on numerous theatre projects in New York with the playwright, his good friend and sometime housemate, Nancy Hasty.

The Director also features Josephine Bloom, Alex Rowe, Brayden Palmer, Sarah Greenwood and Emilia Hristov.

Fiddler On The Roof

Event Date: 21/10/2018, 05:00 pm

Moriah College presents Fiddler on the Roof - October 2018
Fiddler is one of the greatest and most loved musicals of all time, capturing the hearts and imagination of audiences around the world.
It centres on village milkman Tevye, husband to Golde and father of five daughters, attempting to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences in turn-of-the-century Russia encroach upon the lives of the family and the entire village.

Full of humour, warmth, great characters and spectacular, show-stopping numbers like “Tradition”, “If I Were a Rich Man”, “Matchmaker”, “Sunrise, Sunset” and “To Life!”, its premiere (which featured Zero Mostel, Bette Middler, Julia Migenes and Beatrice Arthur among others!) ran to 3000 shows on Broadway. It won nine Tony Awards and has since been performed in almost every country on earth. The Hollywood adaptation starring Topol won 3 Oscars.

Moriah’s production of Fiddler on the Roof promises to be a breathtaking theatrical experience and the perfect event to crown the school’s 75th Anniversary celebrations.

Renowned for spectacular musicals that showcase its talented musicians, vocalists and actors, the school last staged the iconic show in 1994. Then, as now, it was helmed by indefatigable Director of Music and Co-curricular, Roberta Goot OAM.

“Fiddler is the perfect choice,” Goot explains. “It is a beautifully crafted musical. Every song is memorable and it is full of great music and timeless wisdom. It is steeped in ‘traditions’ as we are at Moriah and, more than anything, is a story of family: it speaks to the challenges we all still face in some way – and highlights the need for balance, just like the fiddler!”

This historic production features current students as young as 9 as well alumni, current parents, parents of alumni, staff members, even grandparents!
Rehearsals have been taking place over many months and the level of professionalism, attention to detail, effort and resources employed point to a definitive production.

Evergreen Ensemble presents a stunning concert of baroque and folk music
Evergreen Ensemble presents a stunning concert of baroque and folk music in North Sydney evocatively titled Snow in Summer.
And, with a delicious afternoon tea included, it also launches its gorgeous new album of the same name into the bargain!
The program features the music of Northern Scotland and Scandinavia with ancient vocal and instrumental melodies interspersed with exciting new compositions, inspired by rugged northern landscapes.
Presented by The Independent as part of its hugely popular “Prelude in Tea” Sunday afternoon concert series, guests will enjoy a scrumptious afternoon tea from 2:30pm followed by the sumptuous sounds of Evergreen from 3:30pm.

Winter is a time of solitude but also of festivity and story-telling. This program gives us the space to reflect on the passing of time, the seasons, memories and loves lost
– as well as powerful connections to the land.
Alongside 18th century sonatas you’ll hear arrangements of folk songs: sparse, ambient string textures, plucked notes resonating like stars in a clear night sky and a voice soaring high above.

Evergreen Ensemble features three female musicians from Melbourne - Shane Lestideau (baroque violin), Samantha Cohen (theorbo and baroque guitar), Claire Patti (Celtic harp and voice) together with Sydney viola da gamba virtuoso Jenny Eriksson.
The October 2018 Snow in Summer tour also launches their CD album of the same name.
