Opera, Wine & Dine Series -

Event Date: 14/09/2018, 07:00 pm

Fully costumed comic opera and a superb bespoke meal in a stunning hidden-Sydney venue.
Enjoy a night of hilarity with Opera Bites and Rossini's "The Barber of Seville". Following sold-out performances in 2017, Opera Bites has once again partnered with The Castlereagh Boutique Hotel to bring you an unforgettable evening of fully costumed popular opera complete with a bespoke menu and select fine wines to match. As you step through the doors of this breath-taking heritage listed dining room you’ll find yourself immersed in the world of operatic splendour.

Count Almaviva has fallen in love with Rosina – he has come to Seville in disguise as the student Lindoro to win her hand and to see if she will love him for who he is and not his rank. First, however, he must get her away from the clutches of her protector Dr Bartolo who wants to marry her himself. Almaviva enlists the help of Figaro, the barber and general factotum, who is always ready (for a price) to come up with a brilliant idea. Rosina is indeed in love with Lindoro (although she has no idea who he really is) but Dr Bartolo’s accomplices, Berta and Don Basilio try their best to thwart the Count’s plans. Figaro makes the Count disguise himself as a soldier as a way of getting into Bartolo’s house but will Rosina want ‘Lindoro’ when she finds out about his deception...?

Double pass includes entertainment, 3-course bespoke menu and matching wines.

Next Lesson by Chris Woodley
“Children who need be taught to respect traditional moral values are being taught that they have an inalienable right to be gay. All of those children are being cheated of a sound start in life – yes, cheated.” Margaret Thatcher, October 1987.

In 1988, Michael, a gay student at a South London high school, comes out to his mother. That same year, at the height of the AIDS crisis, Thatcher’s Tory government introduces Section 28 of the Local Government Act, which forbids ‘the promotion of homosexuality’ in British schools, including supporting or encouraging the view that gay relationships are ‘normal’ or equal to heterosexual ones. The legislation will not be repealed until 2003.

Spanning two decades, Chris Woodley’s semi-autobiographical play looks at the enduring impact of Section 28 on that boy, the man he becomes, and the school he attends and subsequently returns to as a teacher.

Along the way, teachers and students – male and female – debate, flirt, mourn, argue, and strive for acceptance within the school and its community, as the years pass and opinions around homosexuality change.

The Elements Of An Offence

Event Date: 10/09/2018, 08:00 pm

The Elements of an Offence by James Gefell
Detective Sergeant Christine Anderson is a smart cop, but her new case is a bit of a problem. Her witness is hostile, her suspect’s an idiot, and this time she doesn’t agree with the book.

Making things difficult is her boss, Detective Inspector Rachel Marks, who also happens to be her lover.

The thin blue line just got thick as s**t.

Based on the writer’s experiences as a serving police officer, this is a biting ‘bureaucratic comedy’ about law and order and the danger of mixing the personal and the professional.
