Value For Money

Event Date: 05/05/2023, 07:00 pm

Presented by FORM Dance Projects and Riverside Theatres (Parramatta))
With Australia’s current uncertain economy, it’s rising costs and elevated inflation, Value For Money is a timely named contemporary dance work by GUTS Dance from Mparntwe (Alice Springs) Central Australia, in their first FORM Dance Projects Dance Bites season at Riverside Theatres.

For GUTS Dance it's the rift between the calculable economic value of life and the intangible emotional and physi-cal value of a person that the work investigates, as shaped by each culture and context. It looks at how relationships,

community, proximity and place change our perception of a life’s worth.
Sara Black and Jasmin Sheppard are the choreographers and concept creators. Sara, who works in Australia and overseas, choreographed Double Beat, which was premiered by FORM in the 2022 May Dance Bites season.
Jasmin Sheppard is a contemporary dancer, choreographer and director who studied at NAISDA and is a former Bangarra Dance Senior dancer, a Tagalaka Aboriginal woman with Irish, Chinese and Hungarian ancestry.
Performance contains nudity.

Driftwood The Musical

Event Date: 03/05/2023, 07:30 pm

Australian musical returns to Chapel Off Chapel, Prahan
Driftwood the Musical, the moving and enthralling story of a family surviving the ravages of war has been nominated for a ‘Green Room Award’ for “New Australian Music Theatre Writing”.
This new Australian musical had its world premiere in Melbourne last year and is now being reworked by director and acclaimed theatre-maker Gary Abrahams along with Anthony Barnhill and Jane Bodie and returns to Chapel Off Chapel from 3 – 20 May.
At the conclusion of last year’s season venue manager, Cate Crowley said “Driftwood - The Musical was one of the most successful new Australian works we have ever seen here at Chapel in our 27-year history. Houses were full and audiences were absolutely thrilled and heartened to see an original story so beautifully portrayed.”
Driftwood The Musical tells the inspirational story of the renowned Austrian/ Australian sculptor Karl Duldig and his artist-inventor wife, Slawa Horowitz-Duldig. We follow their lives in pre-war Vienna, the family’s narrow escape from Nazi Austria, Slawa’s ingenious invention of the foldable umbrella, and the incredible chain of events that took place after miraculously escaping the Holocaust and rebuilding their careers as artists in Melbourne.

This epic story that covers three continents and three generations is based on an original stage play by award-winning playwright Jane Bodie, based on the original memoir by Eva de Jong-Duldig. Lyrics by Anthony Barnhill with additional lyrics by Jane Bodie and Tania De Jong. The show will be directed by Gary Abrahams.
“It is so timely, that it’s both poetical and painful. The stagecraft is mesmerising. The music is sublime. The acting and singing are superlative. This story and stunningly crafted musical deserves to tour the world as a beacon of hope, and a reminder to avoid history repeating itself.” Australian Stage

Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’, a musical based on the smash hit concept album of the same name.
American Idiot is energetic, angry and politically disenchanted. Just what you would expect from a punk- rock opera about youth in America. Based on the 2004 concept album of the same name, it follows the story of self-proclaimed "Jesus of Suburbia" Johnny and his friends as they attempt to escape the mundanity of their suburban lives. The Briefing

Event Date: 16/04/2023, 07:00 pm

Quick Tix open to all Melbourne Members
You’re invited to be part of the press pack at The Briefing, a send up of right-wing politics that takes aim at the US, only to catch Australia in its crosshairs as well.

Melissa McGlensey is tackling the dumpster fire of news from the USA in the only way she knows how – through comedy. Behind the podium, she transforms into right-wing blowhard Sarah Huckabee Sanders, taking you on a journey of absurd political theatre, partisan nonsense and dark humour, before giving you the right of reply in an improvised Q&A session that promises to yield more laughs than actual answers. You’ve never experienced a presser like this before.

Don't forget to bring your questions!

Melissa McGlensey is an American writer (The Onion, Reductress, The Betoota Advocate) and comedian (Completely Improvised Survivor, The Big HOO-HAA!, Soothplayers). In her debut solo, she’ll show off her signature brand of comedy in a blend of improv, satire and character stand-up.

The Briefing is directed by Alasdair Tremblay-Birchall (Magma, Teleport!), who is a stand-up and sketch comedy performer who writes jokes for TV like Shaun Micallef's Mad as Hell.

Additional game design by Douglas Wilson (RMIT University, Die Gute Fabrik)

Gumbo is played by Felix MacFarlane. Additional design by Douglas Wilson.

'Incredibly funny... quick off the mark and consistently hilarious. ★★★★' ArtsHub

'If you’re interested in US politics and looking for a laugh, this should be in your calendar.' Beat Magazine

'A brilliant example of political comedy. Much better than anything produced by SNL.' Squirrel Comedy

'McGlensey demonstrates great writing and performing talent and provides some light-hearted respite from a very dire political reality.' Stage Whispers

Audience members are encouraged to heckle, challenge and question the comedian during parts of the show including the designated Q&A section, but are not forced to interact if they don't want to.
