The Culture

Event Date: 03/05/2023, 07:30 pm

The Culture comes to Sydney
"A spunky, fast-talking, take no prisoners twosome…Wonderful, timely, and poignant." The Front Row Centre, NYC
Katie’s cheeky, brave and sensitive. Will is witty and warm with a huge heart. They’re single and maybe a little co-dependant. Together they host a podcast ‘Don’t Even Get Me Started’, where they bitch about the fact that they’re straight up done.
When they’re home together, they’re safe, they’re happy, no-one can hurt them. They have everything they need. Almost.
What happens when you put yourself out there, and try to find love as a woman or a gay man? Is their friendship enough to keep them safe?
"Mina Asfour and playwright Laura Jackson are wonderful as Will and Katie."
The Advertiser
Upcoming playwright, Laura Jackson has penned a touching and relevant two hander play called The Culture. Set in Sydney Australia, the play is a story about deep and enduring friendship, and the pitfalls… and sometimes dangers of finding love in a modern world. Audiences are welcomed into Will and Katie’s living room and into an important wider conversation.

"This piece moves me. The Culture is not to be missed."

The Disappearance

Event Date: 03/05/2023, 08:00 pm

Sydney - The play-reading of a new work based on the Kin Platt book and the Reginald Rose script
The Disappearance is an emotional story about a young American teenager facing the combined challenge of his parents’ disintegrating marriage, relocation to Australia and his ongoing attempt to overcome a debilitating speech impediment.
His uncaring, insensitive mother adds to his problems and as things begin to explode for him, he decides to ‘disappear’.
Three people — a loving neighbour and her French boyfriend and an equally caring speech therapist/analyst give hope that his future may be more positive.

Sympathetic, moving and intensely concerned with at the problems of mental health, the play is often humorous but never sentimental.
As with all previous LHE readings, the performance will raise money for the wonderful Actors Benevolent Fund
– with the added aim of showcasing the piece and its cast for a potential later full season of this remarkable work.

Directed by Les Solomon, the reading features some of Sydney’s finest established actors and young performers - and introduces a major new talent in Gordon Vignelles (picture by David Hooley above and attached) in the central role of “Roger”.

Proceeds to Actors Benevolent Fund NSW

Well Worth The Chemo

Event Date: 04/05/2023, 08:00 pm

Sydney Comedy Festival
You might know Michael Shafar from his appearances on Network 10's The Project and Studio 10, or ABC's Comedy Bites, or his debut special (A)LIVE on Amazon Prime. You might even be one of the 70+ million people who has seen his videos online.

It's also entirely possible that you don't know Michael at all. Either way, you'll enjoy his show, because this Jewish, testicular cancer survivor, lawyer-turned-comedian has solutions to all of the world's problems.

Michael receives rave reviews everywhere he performs, but his favourite review came from his oncologist who saw his patient perform and afterwards said: "Great show, Michael. You were well worth the chemo".

Below are some reviews from less significant sources:

'Shafar circumnavigates the line between edgy and offensive with beautiful finesse. ★★★★½' The Age

'A brand of comedian that is getting rarer to come by... if you’re among those who fear comedy has gotten too politically correct, this show will put those fears to rest. ★★★★' Time Out

Value For Money

Event Date: 05/05/2023, 07:00 pm

Presented by FORM Dance Projects and Riverside Theatres (Parramatta))
With Australia’s current uncertain economy, it’s rising costs and elevated inflation, Value For Money is a timely named contemporary dance work by GUTS Dance from Mparntwe (Alice Springs) Central Australia, in their first FORM Dance Projects Dance Bites season at Riverside Theatres.

For GUTS Dance it's the rift between the calculable economic value of life and the intangible emotional and physi-cal value of a person that the work investigates, as shaped by each culture and context. It looks at how relationships,

community, proximity and place change our perception of a life’s worth.
Sara Black and Jasmin Sheppard are the choreographers and concept creators. Sara, who works in Australia and overseas, choreographed Double Beat, which was premiered by FORM in the 2022 May Dance Bites season.
Jasmin Sheppard is a contemporary dancer, choreographer and director who studied at NAISDA and is a former Bangarra Dance Senior dancer, a Tagalaka Aboriginal woman with Irish, Chinese and Hungarian ancestry.
Performance contains nudity.

Driftwood The Musical

Event Date: 03/05/2023, 07:30 pm

Australian musical returns to Chapel Off Chapel, Prahan
Driftwood the Musical, the moving and enthralling story of a family surviving the ravages of war has been nominated for a ‘Green Room Award’ for “New Australian Music Theatre Writing”.
This new Australian musical had its world premiere in Melbourne last year and is now being reworked by director and acclaimed theatre-maker Gary Abrahams along with Anthony Barnhill and Jane Bodie and returns to Chapel Off Chapel from 3 – 20 May.
At the conclusion of last year’s season venue manager, Cate Crowley said “Driftwood - The Musical was one of the most successful new Australian works we have ever seen here at Chapel in our 27-year history. Houses were full and audiences were absolutely thrilled and heartened to see an original story so beautifully portrayed.”
Driftwood The Musical tells the inspirational story of the renowned Austrian/ Australian sculptor Karl Duldig and his artist-inventor wife, Slawa Horowitz-Duldig. We follow their lives in pre-war Vienna, the family’s narrow escape from Nazi Austria, Slawa’s ingenious invention of the foldable umbrella, and the incredible chain of events that took place after miraculously escaping the Holocaust and rebuilding their careers as artists in Melbourne.

This epic story that covers three continents and three generations is based on an original stage play by award-winning playwright Jane Bodie, based on the original memoir by Eva de Jong-Duldig. Lyrics by Anthony Barnhill with additional lyrics by Jane Bodie and Tania De Jong. The show will be directed by Gary Abrahams.
“It is so timely, that it’s both poetical and painful. The stagecraft is mesmerising. The music is sublime. The acting and singing are superlative. This story and stunningly crafted musical deserves to tour the world as a beacon of hope, and a reminder to avoid history repeating itself.” Australian Stage
