Shopfront’s flagship Emerging Artist Residency once again culminates in a two-week long festival with works from eight emerging artists. Featuring an array of new works across theatre, interdisciplinary work, soundscapes, film, sculpture and music, artists will explore themes of friendship, adulthood, the female body, aloneness, the capitalisation of wellness, and social constructs.

Sydney - Mozart Clarinet Quintet, Schubert & Hummel
Witness a musical revolution! In the late 1700s, Vienna was seized by enthusiasm for the clarinet. Mozart fell in love with the sound of this fashionable new instrument, considering it the closest to the human voice, especially in the hands of the brilliant virtuoso Anton Stadler. He was moved by Stadler and clarinet builder Theodor Lotz’ latest invention, the basset clarinet, to compose his Clarinet Quintet, with its perfect proportions and melodic invention making it one of his best-loved pieces to this day.
Mozart’s repertoire for the clarinet put it on the map as a solo instrument, and inspired his former student and protégé Johann Nepomuk Hummel, a celebrated musician and composer in his own right. Hummel’s Clarinet Quartet is a beautifully balanced work of chamber music, and highlights his importance as a bridge between the Classical and Romantic eras.
We will also hear from Hummel’s friend and colleague Franz Schubert, and his unfinished String Trio D.471. Written at the start of one of the happiest and most creatively productive periods of his life, you can hear Schubert’s brilliance unfolding before your eyes in this lyrical gem.

The Alliance Française French Film Festival 2023 has revealed its complete crème-de-la-crème
programme of contemporary French films. The 34th edition of the largest celebration of French film
outside of France, arrives across Australia from 7th March – 23rd April. The culturally curious will once
again venture to the cinema and be seduced by a season of electrifying French storytelling.
Setting the scene with a heady dose of glamour, lust and manipulation, Nicolas Bedos’ Masquerade
opens the festival. An official selection of Cannes Film Festival 2022, the sexy and oh-so-French
drama starring Pierre Niney, Isabelle Adjani and Marine Vacth transports cinemagoers to the dreamy
shores of Côte d’Azur. Closing the festival on a bittersweet high, is a road trip of sublime joy and
tears in Didier Barcelo’s Freestyle, featuring rising star Benjamin Voisin and the enchanting Marina
Foïs.
