The Laugh Stand at Harold Park Hotel presents John Knowles - Storytiller as part of the SMH Spectrum Now Festival.
Raconteur John Knowles has been hoarding bizarre family stories in his tiny head for half a century. Eg. Why does he have Johnny Carson’s fish? Where’s the $1,000,000 his Dad found? The somewhat eagerly awaited follow up to his Moosehead Comedy Award winning show Saddle Sore.
John Knowles has worked as a comedian, writer and chlorine salesman in Sydney ever since German sailors put him off the Hamburg Sud container ship he had called home for six weeks on the high seas.
John has ‘inadvertently’ sent three people to hospital with stab wounds. He has worked as a professional Kermit the Frog impersonator. His wife Ronelle is one of 16 chidren (plus a foster child). While John was working nights at a dubious family business called Swanky Franky’s, John’s dad was out drinking and deep-sea fishing with Johnny Carson and selling jet-skis to Haiti’s dictator, Baby Doc Duvalier. (The blue fin tuna in the photo above was caught by Carson on that trip - then stuffed and mounted.) John was expelled in grade 11 for sneaking a chainsaw into his high school and surprising a rival by cutting his guitar in two. A proud father himself, John constantly tries to make his four young children laugh, to which they often reply. “Don’t give up your day job Dad”. His day job is being their carer.
John hoards stories. He can’t help it. Name a topic. It’ll remind him of a true story. Most are funny, some are chilling and others just plain odd. The show is directed by George ‘Rev Slim Limits’ Catsi and presented by Dane Hiser and The Laugh Stand.

360 ALLSTARS is a phenomenal physical performance exploring all forms of rotation. Boasting a stellar cast, including world champion athletes, world-class dancers and world renowned musicians, the production connects the street with the elite to deliver a radical urban circus!

A performance like no other, 360 ALLSTARS reinvents the traditional circus by presenting contemporary performance styles instead of conventional circus art forms. Replace acrobats with break dancers, substitute a basketball freestyler in place of a juggler, swap the unicyclist for a BMX flatlander, and exchange the hoop act for a Roue Cyr artist, and you get an exhilarating circus performance like nothing you have seen before!

And with live music from award-winning master musicians and “ringmasters”, Gene Peterson and Sam Perry, 360 ALLSTARS is as aurally exciting as it is visually astounding. Featuring artists from UK, Europe, America, Australia & NZ, the performance is a spectacular, colourful and audibly exciting expression of a generation that has reinvented public performance.

Fusing amazing physical skills with the extraordinary artistry that emerges from urban culture, 360 ALLSTARS is a revolutionary production that will leave you dizzy with excitement!

The 360 ALLSTARS crew will also be running workshops after school on Tuesday March 24 from 4pm-5pm at various local venues. Workshops include BMX Flatlanding, Found Sound, Breakdancing, Freestyle Basketballing, and Circus. Please note different workshops are suitable for different ages and abilities. Workshop sizes are strictly limited, so get in quick.
