WILD SWANS - Quick Tix

Event Date: 19/07/2015, 06:00 pm

Hans Christian Anderson's Wild Swans
The stunning Wild Swans music - so evocative, beautiful and spine-tingling - was written by the brilliant Australian composer, Elena Kats-Chernin, for the ballet, Wild Swans – choreographed by Meryl Tankard and staged by the Australian Ballet at the Sydney Opera House in 2003. Later, as an orchestral suite, the music was successfully recorded

Now Wild Swans returns to the Opera House – to the Utzon Room - where violinist, Victoria Jacono-Gilmovich, and pianist, John Martin – in a highly dramatic and haunting re-arrangement of the score – provide a dazzling accompaniment to the original story - Wild Swans – told in the words of the legendary Danish storyteller, Hans Andersen, adapted by director, Rodney Fisher AM.

The narrator is Amanda Muggleton, the much loved Australian actress – star of Master Class, Shirley Valentine, Steaming, The Female of the Species, David Mamet’s Boston Marriage and The Book Club (soon at the Ensemble).

In Wild Swans, Amanda Muggleton tells the story of the sadly neglected princess, Elise, and her lonely search for her eleven brothers who have been driven into exile by their spiteful stepmother. Rescued by eleven magnificent white swans and carried across storm-tossed seas, Elise’s adventures grow ever more magical and mysterious and build to an enthralling climax.

For audiences - young and old – Wild Swans is an exciting, scary, poignant, unforgettable experience.

Australian Premiere!
Set amidst a crumbling suburban dream, Lisa D’Amour’s award-winning Detroit is an ecstatic and dangerous comedy that brilliantly captures our precarious economic times. Darlinghurst Theatre Company presents the Australian premiere of Detroit on 21 July at Eternity Playhouse.

Stage and screen director Ross McGregor (Neighbours, Speaking in Tongues) has assembled a stellar cast including Logie Award-winning actress Lisa Chappell (McLeod’s Daughters The Cult), Ronald Falk (Winners and Losers, The Doctor Blake Mysteries), Claire Lovering (San Andreas, The Graduate), James O’Connell (Gallipoli, The Secret River) and Ed Wightman (The Lion King, Superman Returns).

Ben and Mary live in a decaying suburb hard hit by economic downturn. Ben’s lost his job and Mary’s discovered alcohol. They fire up the barbeque to welcome the arrival of new neighbours; a couple broke and fresh out of rehab.

As the night wears on confessions are shared, inhibitions are shed and bacchanalia ensues.
Ross McGregor is thrilled to bring Detroit to Australian audiences for the first time.
“It’s not often I come across a play that is so well written, with great dialogue, that’s still relevant today,” he said. “Detroit is about dreams, self-respect, employment and community, and how quickly these can be destroyed. But sometimes they need to be for new growth to appear.”

The Cherry Orchard

Event Date: 16/07/2015, 08:00 pm

A play about transition that itself transitioned theatre into a new age
A noblewoman returns home to her family estate in provincial Russia after a five‐year absence in France to escape the haunting memories her son's death.

The enormous cherry orchard on the estate is in full and glorious bloom. But, the estate itself is in dire financial trouble and is about to be sold to pay debts.
On the verge of ruin, the estate owners procrastinate and helplessly cling to their aimless gentility amidst a climate of huge social and economic transition. A classic of world drama, THE CHERRY ORCHARD showcases Chekhov’s rich sensitivities as an observer of human nature.

THE CHERRY ORCHARD was first produced at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1904 under the direction of Konstantin Stanislavsky. The Depot Theatre’s production features the 1916 Julius West translation and is directed by Julie Baz (co‐ artistic director of The Depot Theatre), designed by David Jeffrey (also co‐artistic director), with costumes by new design graduate Lisa Washburn.

The large ensemble cast is made up of a range Sydney’s emerging and seasoned performers: Jane Angharad, Anne Brito, Myles Burgin, Leo Domigan, David Jeffrey, Justine Kacir, Theo Kokkinidis, Dave Kirkham, Emily McGowan, Roger Smith, James Smithers and Cherrie Whalen‐David.

Russian writer, Anton Chekhov is recognized as a master and leading playwright and modern short story writer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His plays are still staged worldwide, and his overall body of work influenced writers such as James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams and Henry Miller.

KEATING - The Musical

Event Date: 15/07/2015, 08:00 pm

Hi musical and winner of multiple awards!
Keating! The Musical is simply the story of the rise and fall of Paul Keating.
In song. And dance. And swingin’, rockin’ musical fun!

The show debuted in 2005 at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, became a cult hit and went on to tour nationally, become a major commercial hit in theatres such as Belvoir Street and win multiple awards for the script, the production and its actors.

Birdie Productions is proud to bring this production to the former PM’s home town of Bankstown - where he is still considered a local hero.
Paul Keating himself (who attended the original show multiple times) may pop in as the guest of honour at Bankstown’s Bryan Brown Theatre.
He believes the musical is popular because politics and public life today are without humour.
"The game is very dour," he says, "But satire can get a lot across. It can cut out the humbug."

Birdie Productions – which debuted earlier this year with a sell-out hit production of Hot Shoe Shuffle starring Daryl Somers - has again assembled an all-star cast blazing with young talent.

Director Jordy Shea says Keating! is a show that needs to be seen more than ever today. “At a time where politics is lacking panache, presentation and chutzpah, this show will transfer you straight back to when it had all those things!
It's the story of a man who believed and won over Australia.”

With Shea, musical director Philip Eames and choreographer Alex Lewtas at the helm,
Keating! The Musical stars Andy Leonard as Paul Keating, Doron Chester as both Bob Hawke and John Howard, Jonathon Holmes as Alexander Downer and John Hewson, Sean Curran as Cheryl Kernot, Rick Woodhouse as Gareth Evans with Rebecca Morris, Alex Morgan and Claire Mitchell featuring in a range of hilarious ensemble roles.

This enticing story is a delicious mix of sex, death & chocolate!
This enticing story of the famous courtesan is a delicious mix of sex, death and chocolate.

Together the dramatic and comedic twists and turns of plot pose the question: Who is responsible for her destruction? The madam who exploits her, the marquis who breaks her heart, the man who demands too much of her or does Marie herself kill all hope when she makes her choice to be Marguerite the lady of the Camellias?

Award winning playwright Pam Gems creates a modern woman in the framework of the famous novel by Alexandre Dumas, by stripping the notorious courtesan of all sentimentality to make her a strong contemporary figure with impossible choices to make.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)
The brainchild of The Reduced Shakespeare Company and first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1987 this play subsequently transferred to London's West End where it ran for an amazing nine years!

The show is an hilarious tour de force that touches on all of Shakespeare's work with every single one of the one thousand one hundred twenty-two roles in Shakespeare's plays performed by just three actors in 97 mins (the sonnets are thrown in as a DVD extra). The play is notable for holding the (self-proclaimed) world record for the shortest-ever performance of Hamlet, clocking in at 43 seconds, as well as the fastest performance of Hamlet backwards, at 42 seconds!

The Genesian production of course aims to break all these records. We're into MP3's now anyway. The people at Guinness have yet to respond, but do come along and cheer on our record breaking performance of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged).

With an experienced production team and a very exciting cast this production will be great fun!

Ghost Stories

Event Date: 13/07/2015, 08:00 pm

Ask yourself, are you brave enough…
Seen by over 450,000 people worldwide, the smash hit West End play, is now re-invented, re-designed and reborn for its Australian debut.
Ghost Stories - a truly terrifying theatrical experience that is not for the faint hearted will play at the Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House from Wednesday 8 July to Saturday 15 August 2015.

Ghost Stories mixes the very best of theatre with all the thrills of a great horror film, taking you on a chilling journey that you'll never forget. This production has since been spooking theatre goers in Toronto, Moscow and it’s now Sydney’s turn to laugh and scream in equal measures.

One of ‘Ghost Stories’ most remarkable achievements, is that despite nearly half a million people seeing the play, details of its plot and storyline are shrouded in secrecy. There’s only one way to know what it’s about…and that is to see it for yourself.

Warning: Please be advised that whilst free of blood and gore, Ghost Stories contains moments of extreme shock and tension. The play is unsuitable for anyone under the age of 15. We strongly advise those of a nervous disposition and any other medical conditions to carefully consider their decision to attend.
