Three Sisters

Event Date: 24/10/2015, 08:00 pm

A landmark of modern drama not to be missed!
First performed at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1901, Three Sisters probes the lives and dreams of Olga, Masha, and Irina, former Muscovites now living in a provincial town from which they long to escape.

Their hopes for a life more suited to their cultivated tastes and sensibilities provide a touching counterpoint to the relentless flow of compromising events in the real world.

In this powerful play, a landmark of modern drama, Chekhov masterfully interweaves character and theme in subtle ways that make the work's climax seem as inevitable as it is deeply moving.

For this Genesian production, our very experienced director Timothy Bennett has chosen to use Brian Friel's highly regarded 1981 translation of Chekhov's play. This beautifully lyrical translation brings the piece to life for a modern English speaking audience, with Friel's deft touch and intelligent use of language highlighting Chekhov's wonderful writing.

A strong cast and expert production team will together make this a very exciting production.

Free champagne and nibbles before the show!

GYPSY The Musical

Event Date: 23/10/2015, 07:30 pm

Proudly presented by Hornsby Musical Society
Hornsby Musical Society INC has been operating since 1958 and provides an avenue for our extremely talented (Sydneysider) cast to polish and display their acting, dancing and singing skills to the public.

There is another story that sits behind Gypsy. One that is close to my own heart. This is the story of theatre and the stage. This is a musical about the last years of Vaudeville.
It is about a theatre form that had thrived during the 1920s and early 1930s. Vaudeville allowed a variety of performers to showcase their talents and make a decent living. It is this story that has always fascinated me.
It is from the stages and acts of Vaudeville where Musical Theatre found its origins to become one of the most popular and engaging theatre styles today.

This production of Gypsy is a salute to Vaudeville, and all theatre that has come before us and to the performers who have left a wonderful legacy on the stage. Our aim was to create a show that will entertain our audiences. Gypsy Rose Lee and Mama Rose would be proud of what the production team, cast and crew have worked so hard to create on our very own stage here at Hornsby RSL.

GYPSY a Musical Fable. BOOK BY Arthur Laurents MUSIC BY Jule Styne, LYRICS BY Stephen Sondheim (Suggested by memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee.

Original Production by David Merrick & Leylan Hayward. Entire production originally directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins

Concert - Coming to America
This is a Prelude in T concert A lush afternoon tea is included in the ticket price.

The composers featured in this concert all had two important things in common: they are all known for composing both film scores as well as "serious" music, and they all spent part of their career composing in the United States of America.

Film music may well be the dominant classical form of the 20th and 21st centuries and each of these composers viewed it as an equally serious and important medium.
This concert surveys some of their equally glorious chamber music.
