Opera At The Independent Theatre

Event Date: 24/01/2016, 02:30 pm

Charming Opera double bill for Sydney!
Operatics, the vibrant young company, returns in January with a mouth-watering double bill at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney:

GENTLEMAN’S ISLAND by Joseph Horowitz (1958)
and
THE TELEPHONE by Gian Carlo Menotti (1946)

Gentleman’s Island – inspired by a ‘Bab Ballad’ of WS Gilbert (of Gilbert & Sullivan fame) - is a drily comic tale of two very British shipwreck survivors who, because they have not been formally introduced, are unable to start any form of conversation!

When - by chance - they discover, however, they have a mutual acquaintance, they quickly become bosom buddies.
That is until a most unexpected twist… This production features Hayden Barrington and Ryan O’Donnell as Messrs Gray and Somers respectively.

The Telephone is a hilarious two-hander where in Ben’s attempts to propose marriage to Lucy are frustrated by her interminable
conversations on the telephone. Can you guess his ingenious solution? Samanta Lestavel and Ian Warwick star.

Operantics is a new independent opera company run for and by young artists who are dedicated to pursuing careers in opera.
Artistic Director Katie Miller-Crispe said the company combines a passion for music with a flair for storytelling.
“Our enterprising group of singers produces fresh new productions of classic favourites and lesser known gems - at an affordable price.”

Later in the year Operantics will perform the Australian premiere of Jonathan Dove’s contemporary operatic setting of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park (three performances from 20-24 April) and Bellini’s timeless romantic favourite La Sonnambula (three performances from 29 Sept to 2 Oct).

Last Dance At Dum Dum

Event Date: 21/01/2016, 07:30 pm

A serious comedy with message to take home
Last Dance at Dum Dum is a play about the dying breed of Anglo-Indians living in Calcutta.

Set in early 80s, this is a serious comedy about a vividly memorable gang of eccentrics and exotics who are attempting to come to terms with their pasts and their fears for the future.

Their world is filled with Violet’s hilarious obsession with all things British, Elliot’s questionable dress sense, Daphne’s weakness for French records and the confrontational outbursts of Muriel Marsh who in spite of her ill health would do anything to defend their territory against the religious fundamentalists looming just behind the garden wall.

The Fantasticks

Event Date: 11/01/2016, 07:30 pm

The World's Longest Running Musical Finally Arrives in Sydney!
What is the world’s longest-running musical theatre production? Cats? The Phantom of the Opera? Chicago? The Lion King? No, it’s a boutique musical with a poetic book and a breezy, inventive score which has been performed all around the globe - The Fantasticks. The show's original off- Broadway production ran a total of 42 years and 17,162 performances, making it the world's longest-running musical.
Whimsical, poignant and romantic, The Fantasticks focuses on two young lovers, their meddling fathers, and the journey we all must take through adolescent thrills, the growing pains of hurt and betrayal, the highs of passion, the challenges of distance and the agonies of heartbreak to discover how to truly love.
In a theatrical and inventive fashion, the gallant and enigmatic narrator - El Gallo - introduces a pair of young lovers - Matt and Luisa - who experience the magical, moonlit phase of falling in love. For a time, romance seems perpetually exciting, and heroics always seem to save the day. El Gallo leads our young protagonists from the romantic moonlight into the harsh sunshine, where the weaknesses in their relationship are exposed and the reality of the struggles and heartache love brings is revealed. With the understanding that “without a hurt the heart is hollow”, Matt and Luisa search to find their own identities, and in turn, to discover their strengths as a couple in times of both darkness and light.

With hit songs such as Try to Remember and Soon It’s Gonna Rain, it’s no wonder The Fantasticks is the longest-running musical in history.

“The best!”
- New York Post

“The Fantasticks is the last word in theatrical sophistication.”
- The New York Times

"The Fantasticks is a dream come true, a total joy.”

Sydney’s all-time favourite summer treat returns
Ticket Wombat is giving away a Family Pass!

"You'll love this production - no matter what age you are" – The Sun Herald

"Pure charm for adults and children alike"
– The Age

Sydney’s favourite family entertainment The Wind in the Willows continues its well-loved summer tradition returning to the beautiful surrounds of Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney, playing from Wednesday 6 to Saturday 23 January 2016.

Kenneth Grahame’s immortal story of life on the riverbank is a rollicking yet gentle adventure, starring the pompous, arrogant, vain, hilarious Toad – a favourite with children everywhere. Toad, along with his better-behaved friends, Ratty, Mole, Otter and Badger, as well as the rascally Weasel, have come to life every summer for the past 14 years providing enchanting and lively entertainment for all the family.

This critically acclaimed outdoor theatre production delivers music, songs and laughs. There is fun for young and old as the Head Chief Rabbit transforms the audience into rabbits with a waggle of the ears and a wiggle of the nose. The young ‘rabbits’ are encouraged to get involved in the action, and are given every opportunity to scream out loud, sing along and become part of the adventure. With laughs and surprises for children and adults, this is interactive theatre at its best.

Over the years tens of thousands have delighted in the simple pleasures of this rollicking promenade production… so this summer pack a picnic, pack the kids... and head on down to the riverbank.
