A 600lbs gay recluse tries to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.
BIG-HEARTED AND FIERCELY FUNNY THE WHALE MAKES ITS AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE AT THE OLD FITZ FOR MARDI GRAS

Red Line Productions at the Old Fitz Theatre is pleased to be partnering with the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras again to present the Australian Premiere of The Whale by Samuel D. Hunter.

On the outskirts of Mormon Country, Idaho, a six hundred pound gay recluse hides away in his apartment and slowly eats himself to death. Desperate to reconnect with his long-estranged daughter, he reaches out to her only to find a viciously sharp-tongued and wildly unhappy teen. Big-hearted and fiercely funny, The Whale tells the story of a man's last chance at redemption and of finding beauty in the most unexpected places.

Director Shane Anthony (Songs for the Fallen) has complied an impressive cast including Keith Agius (Henry V, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead), Chloe Bayliss (The Good Doctor, Charitable Intent), Alex Beauman (On the Shore of the Wide World), Meredith Penman (Boys Will Be Boys, Blood Bank) and Hannah Waterman (Eastenders, Love Letters).

Having won the 2013 Drama Desk Award and the 2013 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, The Whale has solidified Samuel D. Hunter as one of Broadway’s most promising young playwrights. Hunter first drew attention for A Bright New Boise that won him a 2011 Obie Award for Playwriting.

Opera At The Independent Theatre

Event Date: 24/01/2016, 02:30 pm

Charming Opera double bill for Sydney!
Operatics, the vibrant young company, returns in January with a mouth-watering double bill at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney:

GENTLEMAN’S ISLAND by Joseph Horowitz (1958)
and
THE TELEPHONE by Gian Carlo Menotti (1946)

Gentleman’s Island – inspired by a ‘Bab Ballad’ of WS Gilbert (of Gilbert & Sullivan fame) - is a drily comic tale of two very British shipwreck survivors who, because they have not been formally introduced, are unable to start any form of conversation!

When - by chance - they discover, however, they have a mutual acquaintance, they quickly become bosom buddies.
That is until a most unexpected twist… This production features Hayden Barrington and Ryan O’Donnell as Messrs Gray and Somers respectively.

The Telephone is a hilarious two-hander where in Ben’s attempts to propose marriage to Lucy are frustrated by her interminable
conversations on the telephone. Can you guess his ingenious solution? Samanta Lestavel and Ian Warwick star.

Operantics is a new independent opera company run for and by young artists who are dedicated to pursuing careers in opera.
Artistic Director Katie Miller-Crispe said the company combines a passion for music with a flair for storytelling.
“Our enterprising group of singers produces fresh new productions of classic favourites and lesser known gems - at an affordable price.”

Later in the year Operantics will perform the Australian premiere of Jonathan Dove’s contemporary operatic setting of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park (three performances from 20-24 April) and Bellini’s timeless romantic favourite La Sonnambula (three performances from 29 Sept to 2 Oct).

Last Dance At Dum Dum

Event Date: 21/01/2016, 07:30 pm

A serious comedy with message to take home
Last Dance at Dum Dum is a play about the dying breed of Anglo-Indians living in Calcutta.

Set in early 80s, this is a serious comedy about a vividly memorable gang of eccentrics and exotics who are attempting to come to terms with their pasts and their fears for the future.

Their world is filled with Violet’s hilarious obsession with all things British, Elliot’s questionable dress sense, Daphne’s weakness for French records and the confrontational outbursts of Muriel Marsh who in spite of her ill health would do anything to defend their territory against the religious fundamentalists looming just behind the garden wall.
