THE RITZ

Event Date: 17/02/2016, 07:30 pm

Stay out of the steam room. It gets pretty wild in there!
“I laughed a lot and who should ask for anything more”
-- The New York Times

On the run from his homicidal mobster brother-in-law, hapless balding middle-aged businessman Gaetano Proclo takes refuge in a seedy, steamy Manhattan bathhouse called ‘The Ritz’ – mistaking it for a hotel.

Amidst the amyl-nitrate-scented clouds he encounters chubby chasers, go-go boys, bumbling detectives, gay orgies and a Bette Midler wannabe with dreams of Broadway fame.

Then his wife tracks him down and jumps to the wrong conclusions about his sexual orientation.

This madcap farce, written at the height of the gay sexual revolution before AIDS changed the world, offers a glimpse of a lifestyle both hedonistic and celebratory, when anything seemed possible.

The Ritz marked Terrence McNally’s Broadway breakthrough and was subsequently adapted into a romp of a movie that quickly earned cult status.

If you loved the film, you’ll adore the play!

GODSPELL

Event Date: 09/02/2016, 07:30 pm

The much-loved rock opera!
The much-loved rock opera GODSPELL - a timeless tale of kindness, tolerance and love will have a one-week season at the Playhouse Theatre, Sydney Opera House from 9 – 14 February 2016 before moving to Melbourne for performances in The Royal Botanical Gardens.

GODSPELL REIMAGINED features a cast of eight multi-talented all singing, all dancing performers who will take the audience on a magical ride of peace, love and joy.

GODSPELL first appeared off Broadway in 1971 and with music by legendary composer Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Wicked) quickly became a favourite amongst lovers of theatre and proved to be one of the most popular musicals ever staged in Australia. GODSPELL opened at The Playbox Theatre in Melbourne in November 1971 and closed after 504 sold-out performances to a riotous crowd of well-wishers in December 1972.

GODSPELL was the brainchild of John-Michael Tebelak, who based the story on the Gospel of St Matthew. He then brought Stephen Schwartz in to write the music and a hit was born.
Day By Day - a power ballad from the show was released as a single (produced by Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum) and gave Colleen Hewett a number 1 hit, earned her a gold record and went on to become the biggest-selling Australian single of the year.

A film and several cast albums have been released and 2011 saw the triumphant Broadway revival of this much loved musical. Featuring songs Day By Day, By My Side, Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord, Save the People, All For the Best and more this vibrant, joyful show is set to once more thrill Australian audiences.

A 600lbs gay recluse tries to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.
BIG-HEARTED AND FIERCELY FUNNY THE WHALE MAKES ITS AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE AT THE OLD FITZ FOR MARDI GRAS

Red Line Productions at the Old Fitz Theatre is pleased to be partnering with the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras again to present the Australian Premiere of The Whale by Samuel D. Hunter.

On the outskirts of Mormon Country, Idaho, a six hundred pound gay recluse hides away in his apartment and slowly eats himself to death. Desperate to reconnect with his long-estranged daughter, he reaches out to her only to find a viciously sharp-tongued and wildly unhappy teen. Big-hearted and fiercely funny, The Whale tells the story of a man's last chance at redemption and of finding beauty in the most unexpected places.

Director Shane Anthony (Songs for the Fallen) has complied an impressive cast including Keith Agius (Henry V, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead), Chloe Bayliss (The Good Doctor, Charitable Intent), Alex Beauman (On the Shore of the Wide World), Meredith Penman (Boys Will Be Boys, Blood Bank) and Hannah Waterman (Eastenders, Love Letters).

Having won the 2013 Drama Desk Award and the 2013 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, The Whale has solidified Samuel D. Hunter as one of Broadway’s most promising young playwrights. Hunter first drew attention for A Bright New Boise that won him a 2011 Obie Award for Playwriting.
