Lane Cove Theatre Company presents the season from 18 March to 9 April at The Performance Space, St Aidan’s in Longueville.
Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, AWAY is a nostalgic look at Australia and Australians separated by diversity and
drawn together by conflict. Audiences will be inspired by Gow’s story of three different families on Christmas vacation in 1967.
Immigrants Harry and Vic love their adopted country but are faced with their son Tom’s terminal illness.
Jim and Gwen fret over their daughter Meg’s blossoming independence and her friendship with the socially unsuitable Tom.
Roy is unable to console a grief-stricken Coral over the death of their only son.
But with the help of some Shakespearean fairies and a spectacular storm, these families are reconciled and face the future anew.
Perhaps AWAY’s greatest strength is as a tale of redemption: tragedy can be overcome; the human spirit can triumph in the darkest of times.
From despair finally emerges the bright dawn of a new day. It’s a message rarely seen in modern theatre – a play of hope.
AWAY is directed by Peter Farmer and stars Rowena McNicol, Claire Guiffre, Wills Burke,
Katherine Stewart, Dimitri Armatas, Kevin Weir, Nicola Read and Trent Gardiner.
