Sydney Harmony Men's Chorus at the Independent Theatre
Sydney Harmony Men's Chorus present two holiday concerts at the Independent Theatre, North Sydney on Saturday 5 Dec.
And among their special guest performers are Australia's own young international stars, Blindside quartet!

This 20-something foursome are just back from the Barbershop Harmony Society's (BHS) International Convention in Pittsburgh mwhere they claimed a 2015 International Collegiate Quartet Bronze Medal.

Sydney Harmony's own 40-strong men's chorus will be joined by the all-women's group Circular Keys
and combine for a 90+ massed chorus performance.
Plus performances by Alouette the former National Silver Medallist all-girl quartet!

Hansel and Gretel - as scary as a nightmare, as enchanting as a dream!
Amanda Muggleton tells the story of Hansel and Gretel, whose starving parents abandon them in the forest. They discover a gingerbread cottage: a trap laid for them by an evil old hag who plans to eat them. Scary as a nightmare, enchanting as a dream – this is a story that’s a joy to be told.

It is a dark tale of hardship and hunger, of children abandoned by their parents and of an evil old woman who preys on the young. But, as writer Neil Gaiman says: “If you are protected from dark things, then you are unprepared to deal with dark things if ever they show up. I think it’s important to show dark things to kids—and in the showing of them, to also demonstrate that dark things can be beaten, that you have the power to fight back, that you can win.”

The obvious lesson to be learned from Hansel and Gretel is to “never take candy from a stranger”. But, in truth, this unsettling story - collected by the Grimm brothers in 1812 – was never designed as a moral tale but rather as a reflection on the fact that in medieval times - during periods of famine - many families were forced to abandon their children.

Now re-imagined by director, Rodney Fisher AM, to encompass both its historical basis and its current relevance, the story is being told at the Opera House by the wonderfully charismatic Amanda Muggleton. The outstanding duo - violinist Victoria Jacono-Gilmovich and pianist, John Martin – provide the dazzling musical accompaniment, which is the work of the brilliant Australian composer, Elena Kats-Chernin.

The Schools Spectacular is an outstanding showcase of the talent in NSW public schools.
In terms of sheer size, scale and scope, the Schools Spectacular is unequaled in the world.
The cast of the Schools Spectacular is comprised of 3,600 of the state’s most talented singers, dancers and musicians.
An extensive audition process is carried out across the state to bring together the 1,300 voice choir, 80 piece orchestra, 2,000 dancers and talented soloists from ages 5 to 18 who will feature in this dazzling display of music, dance and pageantry.

Students from more than 400 public schools across NSW rehearse for months in preparation for four fantastic shows over two days and nights.
