Classical Fireworks In Orchestras Spectacular...

Event Date: 12/05/2019, 03:00 pm

“In Celebration” season with a musical ‘rocket’ - amid a firmament of stars! SYDNEY
Mannheim Rocket transports listeners back to the explosive birth of the modern symphonic style of Mannheim in the late 18th century.
The cutting-edge orchestral sinfonias of Stamitz and Richter were simultaneously energetic and sensuous,
and were a significant influence on the young Mozart, who was later at the epicentre of the Classical Viennese scene.
His fifth violin concerto – nicknamed the Turkish – inhabits a hazy world of love and intrigue, and the finale of Mozart’s Symphony No.40 contains the most famous ascending musical rocket of all.

To continue the bold vision of the orchestra’s founding artistic director – the late Richard Gill AO – violinist Rachael Beesley has been appointed as one of the new co-artistic directors.
Audiences will have the chance to see her direct the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra at City Recital Hall and Hills Grammar, and hear her featured as soloist in the Mozart concerto.
In conjunction with the main concerts, The Voyage of Musical Discovery invites exceptional guest musicians
to join the orchestra to reveal and explain some of the similarities between historical and contemporary musical works.
On May 14, the orchestra shares the City Recital Hall stage with Jane Rutter and her Third Culture World Music Ensemble.
Together they demonstrate the many surprising cultural and historical links between the early classical symphony and the world music of today.

Bare - The Musical

Event Date: 10/05/2019, 07:30 pm

Lane Cove Theatre Company
Having receiving an outpouring of support after being the object of a hate crime when it produced Holding the Man last year, Lane Cove Theatre Company follows up this May with Bare - the contemporary cult classic ‘coming of age’ pop opera set at a Catholic boarding school in the early 2000s.

The car tyres of audience and cast members were slashed last year when the company staged the famous Australian play about gay love during the heat of the Marriage Equality plebiscite. In response, the public flocked to support the play and express their solidarity.

Now, their production of the pulsating, electric contemporary LGBT pop-rock musical Bare follows a group of students at a Catholic boarding school as they grapple with issues of sexuality, identity and the future.
The Off-Broadway hit takes audiences on an emotional musical journey.
Peter and Jason have fallen in love, but they struggle with the fears of revealing their true selves to such an unforgiving world.
With a unique sung-through pop score, heart-pounding lyrics and a cast of bright young characters,
Bare rings with the sounds of youthful repression and revolt.
Bare is a provocative, fresh and utterly honest look at the dangers of baring your soul … and the consequences of continuing to hide.
10th-25th May, Fri & Sat 7.30pm, Sun 2pm

JOSEPH K by Tom Basden

"Breathtakingly funny, expertly constructed and dripping with acid wit." EVENING STANDARD

On his thirtieth birthday, Joseph K has his sushi home-delivery intercepted by two unidentified agents who inform him he is under arrest. He has no idea what he's done wrong but he's determined to clear his name.

Inspired by Franz Kafka’s classic novel ‘The Trial’, Joseph K tells the story of a man who is arrested and prosecuted for a crime that is never revealed and his subsequent struggle against an inaccessible authority.

Short And Sweet Gala Finals

Event Date: 27/04/2019, 07:30 pm

Short and Sweet Finals Sydney
Short+Sweet Theatre Festival reaches its thrilling climax for 2019 with the Gala Finals Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 April,
when the very best of the fest face off in a feast of delicious theatrical bites featuring comedy, drama… romance!
This is the pointy end of the 18th year of the international hit short-form theatre festival which boasts its beginnings in inner west Sydney.
Short+Sweet has since spread the popular 10-minute format in theatre, dance,
cabaret & comedy across Australia and the globe with festivals as far afield as India, Malaysia, Dubai & NZ.
Its Hollywood festival is now the world’s go-to showcase for actors, writers and directors for stage and screen.

This year’s festival has been boosted by a host of new talent from Short+Sweet’s New Directors’ Initiative
in which 40 participants were mentored by experienced directors that included a masterclass by Actors Centre Australia legend Dean Carey.

As usual, the 2019 fest featured judges’ voting and the People’s Choice audience votes
and debuting festival director Sarah Purdue also introduced two highly successful themed weeks:
LGBTQIA Week which coincided with Mardi Gras; and Women’s Week - aligned with International Women’s Day.

Sarah said she was excited to have presented a diverse and engaging festival this year.

“We have had artists representing the Indian and Chinese Australian communities, productions
from the Illawarra, Bundanoon, Canberra and as far away as Los Angeles and Chennai.
We’ve had first-time directors who recently completed their HSC, octogenarians…
and some with over 13 years’ experience in Short+Sweet.
The final line-up is a truly exciting mix of the funny, the thrilling, the feel-good and the bizarre!”

Saturday night 27 April’s show will be judged by a panel of industry professionals, whose awards will be announced and presented after the Sunday 28 April performance.
