Castle Hill Players present Dark Voyager by John Misto
Hollywood, 1962. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are at war.
Between them they’ve terrorized movie studios for over three decades, married nine husbands,
made two hundred films and guzzled enough booze to fill the Hoover Dam.
Now their careers are on the skids and Bette and Joan are locked in a titanic struggle for top-billing on their latest movie.
When America’s most feared columnist, Hedda Hopper, invites them to supper, they call an uneasy truce.
But the evening turns chaotic when an unexpected guest arrives – Marilyn Monroe, drunk, drugged, disheveled, the face of “new” Hollywood.
Soon Marilyn is drawn into the Davis-Crawford war, and what begins as a game becomes a battle for survival.
Will old age and treachery defeat youth and courage? Or is there more to Marilyn Monroe than anyone could have guessed?
You are cordially invited to join these legendary ladies for the ultimate show-biz feast when
Castle Hill Players continue their delicious 2019 season with this tasty theatrical treat: DARK VOYAGER.
On the menu is something for everyone’s taste: singing, dancing, party-games… and just a little bit of murder!

John Misto is a multi-award-winning Australian stage and screen writer whose other plays include
Harp on the Willow, Shoe-horn Sonata, Gossamer and Sky.
His many TV credits include the acclaimed Heroes’ Mountain – The Rescue of Stuart Diver,
which won the Gold Plaque Award for Best Feature Length Telefilm Drama at the 2002 Chicago International Film Festival
and was the first Australian telemovie ever to be purchased by the US Cable Network, Showtime.
John’s awards include the Rodney Seaborn Playwrights' Award, the NSW Premier’s Literary Award and several AFI and AWGIE awards.

Directed by Annette van Roden (The Sum of Us, Proof, Calendar Girls), DARK VOYAGER stars Leigh Scanlon as Joan, Faith Jessel as Bette, Annette Emerton as Hedda, Jacqui Wilson as Marilyn and Adam Garden as Skip.

"The Play grips, Steel's grim vision of the future is both detailed and compelling." DAILY TELEGRAPH
"The Play grips... Steel's grim vision of the future is both detailed and compelling." DAILY TELEGRAPH

Britain - the near future: a country ravaged by environmental destruction, living under a fascist regime. On a remote security outpost in the Peak District, stands the last semblance of humanity, trying to find some hope in their shattered world. An uncompromising production, that looks at where our world could end up in a few years time, if we don't get our act together.

In Between Two

Event Date: 04/04/2019, 07:00 pm

TWO HIP-HOP ARTISTS SPIN STORIES OF CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIA
Two trailblazing stars of the Australian music scene, Joelistics and James Mangohig, will present a vibrant, contemporary portrayal of the Asian Australian experience in their critically-acclaimed production, In Between Two.

The show is being presented at Riverside Theatres from 28th to 30th March and by Monkey Baa at the ARA Darling Quarter Theatre from 4th to 5th April.

Written, composed and performed by Joelistics and James Mangohig, In Between Two tells their respective stories of being half-Asian, growing up in Australia, and feeling stuck between two cultural worlds.

The pair lovingly paint a canvas of their family histories which are as complex and layered as their lyrics – filled with failed proposals and religious strictures, casual racism and empowerment. Their sharp and provocative hip-hop, rap and instrumental music is combined with compelling storytelling and projected image, to explore the forces that have helped shape their way.

Two icons of the Australian hip-hop scene, James Mangohig is an ARIA-nominated producer, and Joelistics is best known as the founder of award-winning hip-hop group, TZU.

Produced by Contemporary Asian Australian Performance, In Between Two is directed by Suzanne Chaundy and developed with master storyteller William Yang and writer Annette Shun Wah (co-directors of Life Giving Stories, Stories East & West and Riverside’s National Theatre of Parramatta’s Who Speaks for Me?).

Chaundy said, "What has struck me most in the discussion around the development of this work is that this is an Australian story so far away from any other Australian story I’ve seen on our stages, and is a true reflection of the multitude of diverse histories that make up our country in the 21st Century."

Streeton Trio: Golden Summer

Event Date: 31/03/2019, 02:30 pm

One of Australia’s premier chamber ensembles, the STREETON TRIO, present a delightful afternoon
From Beethoven’s good-natured piano trio in E flat to the broad B major trio of Brahms, this program (which includes the theatre’s famously scrumptious afternoon tea) explores the many moods of summer.
Book-ending the hearty classics are Kats-Chernin’s Butterflying, Sculthorpe’s evocative Night Song and Piazzola’s Buenos Aires Summer.

The trio’s namesake, Arthur Streeton’s ‘Golden Summer, Eaglemont’ has become one of
the defining images of Australian art and the Streetons explore the many facets of summer in this evocative program.
Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E flat is one of his most good-natured chamber works, while the Brahms opus 8 trio,
written early in his life and later extensively revised, is hugely popular for its broad lyricism and sweeping romantic gestures.
Elena Kats-Chernin’s Butterflying, originally for children’s choir, is heard here in a delightful trio arrangement.
Sculthorpe’s Night Song, in his own words, “is concerned with solitary thoughts at night, while becalmed on a distant sea”.
And finally, Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons, are a homage to Buenos Aires, Piazzola’s hometown, and the city that gave tango to the world. "Summer" (Verana Porteno) depicts the hot, lazy summer days Piazzolla spent in Buenos Aires and is infused with the melodic yearning and rhythmic vitality of the tango.
