The Spooky Mens Chorale

Event Date: 10/02/2019, 02:30 pm

Joyous, hilarious and deeply human choral mischief!
The Spooky Men’s Chorale is a vast, rumbling, steam powered and black clad behemoth.
Based on the twin pillars of grand foolishness and the quest for the perfect subwoofer-rattling boofchord,
the Spooky Men seek to commentate on the absurdity and grandeur of the modern male
- armed only with their voices, a sly collection of hats and facial hair, and a twinkle in the eye!

Their audiences are invited to first joyously experience a wall of mansound, then laugh stupidly, then venture into areas of great tenderness.
Not so much comedic as hilarious, not so much shimmeringly perfect as pleasingly and deeply human.

Formed in 2001 by spookmeister Stephen Taberner, the Spooky Men’s Chorale emerged from the Blue Mountains of NSW,
armed with no more than their voices, a nice line in deadpan and an ill-matched set of hats.
A judicious combination of Georgian table songs, pindrop beautiful ballads, highly inappropriate covers,
and immaculate man anthems like “Don’t stand between a man and his tool” and “We Are Not a Men’s Group”
saw the Spooks attract audiences in Australia and internationally.

Now in middle age, the Spooky Men are more masters of their territory than ever before.
For this delicious Prelude in Tea appearance, they will delicately garnish their much-loved black-catalogue
with further incursions into beauty and stupidity, somewhat like a chocolate muffin with extra bits of chocolate in it.
You must see them, really you must!

A Prelude in Tea is a Sunday afternoon concert series featuring a scrumptious afternoon tea served from 2:30
followed by a 3:30 concert performed by some of Australia’s best and most exciting small ensembles.
With the Streeton Trio, the Flinders Quartet, The Seraphim Trio and more, A Prelude in Tea concert is the perfect Sunday afternoon out!

The Female Of The Species

Event Date: 08/02/2019, 07:30 pm

LANE COVE THEATRE COMPANY presents The Female of the Species By Joanna Murray-Smith
The Female of the Species, by Melbourne writer Joanna Murray-Smith, is the first in a season that is shaping to be the ambitious theatre company’s biggest yet! With four mainstage productions – including its popular annual children’s show – Lane Cove will also present a new Aussie musical, the debut staged reading of a new Australian play… AND its first ever short play festival “In a Nutshell”.
Joanna Murray-Smith is a Melbourne based playwright, screenwriter and novelist. Her plays, which include Honour, Rapture, Bombshells, Nightfall, Redemption, Love Child and Flame, have been produced around the world, including on Broadway, London’s National Theatre and the West End.
The Female of the Species deftly walks the tightrope between satire and farce and is inspired by Germaine Greer’s experience of being held captive in her Essex country house in 2000.
Margot Mason (played by Margaret Olive) - pioneer of the 1970s Women’s Liberation movement, fearless academic, author of a ground-breaking book and numerous following best-sellers – has writer’s block. Molly (Lib Campbell), an unannounced visitor and avowed fan, offers a solution. But then she produces a gun and threatens to kill Margot for warping her own mother’s mind and therefore ruining her life with her book “The Cerebral Vagina”.
The hugely in-demand young director of The Female of Species, Jess Davis, says the play is a kind of antidote to the popular plays of male Aussie writers like David Williamson and Louis Nowra. The women carry the action in this story while the men exist to serve the plot and support the women.
“What was originally intended as a serious piece of feminist commentary blooms into modern farce, quick wit, big ideas and ridiculous reveals. When is the right time for feminism to laugh at itself? As Murray-Smith herself says: “feminism is now a big girl”. And as Molly herself quips ‘Men aren’t our problem. Old feminists are.’”
