Castle Hill Players present Biloxi Blues by Neil Simon
Following the sell-out success of Leading Ladies, Castle Hill Players follows up with one of the world’s great comedies - from the pen of America’s greatest comic writer.
It’s 1943 and Eugene M Jerome is on a hot, smelly train to Biloxi, Mississippi to undergo basic training before shipping out to join the war. Wide-eyed and innocent, Eugene holds 3 wartime goals; to become a writer, stay alive and lose his virginity! His enthusiastic pursuit of all three, mixed with an exhilaration for life makes him a target for teasing and the not-so-friendly attention of the platoon’s crazy Drill Sergeant. But amongst the push-ups, latrine duty and the questionable food, there is Daisy - the charming, well-read convent girl whom Eugene falls for at a USO dance.

This laugh-out-loud comedy even sneaks in some poignant and heartfelt moments as Eugene learns
the power of the written word and the difference between making a stand and simply standing by.

Directing this mouth-watering season is Castle Hill stalwart, Meredith Jacobs. Meredith has directed and acted in numerous Players productions over the years, including directing recent audience favourites, Ladies in Lavender (2017) and Harvey (2018).

ACACIA QUARTET: FRATRES

Event Date: 21/07/2019, 03:30 pm

ACACIA QUARTET return to the Independent Theatre in North Sydney
Internationally acclaimed Australian ensemble the ACACIA QUARTET return to the Independent Theatre in North Sydney with a spectacular Sunday afternoon concert concert that ranges from the romantic to the contemporary with work by Mendelssohn, Arvo Part, Ichmouratov and Australian Lyle Chan!
Mendelssohn wrote his String Quartet No. 2, Op. 13 in 1827, deeply inspired by Beethoven’s last quartets.
Lyle Chan’s new work will be the continuation of Acacia’s close relationship with the Australian composer and Fratres by Estonian Arvo Part
has been described as a “mesmerising set of variations on a six-bar theme combining frantic activity and sublime stillness”.
The climactic work, Airat Ichmouratov’s String Quartet No. 4, Op. 35, ‘Time and Fate’ was composed during the spring of 2012, right after the tragic death of Eleonora Turovsky, who was like a second mother to the composer.

THE INAUGURAL SYDNEY FOLK FESTIVAL

Event Date: 16/07/2019, 07:00 pm

Win a double pass to any day of your choice.
Sydney is set to host its own folk music festival - and no-one’s feet will get wet!

At four great venues in Pitt Street over 2 days and 3 nights, the heart of Sydney will see more than 60 acts
in a massive celebration of the best and most adventurous in today’s new generation of folk.

Timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, top notch musicians aged from 9 to 90
will thrill audiences with a wild rainbow of sounds. You’ll hear fresh young world beats and original voices, traditional music (ballads, shanties, blues, bush music, bluegrass and newgrass) and way, way beyond to Afro funk, Celtic punk and more!

Artistic director, well-known Aussie cultural historian and performer Warren Fahey (Folkways Music, Larrikin Records), says this festival will ‘totally blow away’ any outdated stereotypes of ‘old school’ folk.

“We’ve prepared a joyous celebration of all the musical genres that sit under the big umbrella of ‘folk’.
Storytelling – colonial, indigenous, multicultural – is central… but so is participation.
There’s dance, poetry, theatre, food and drink… and much, much more. The entire line-up is Aussie – in fact all but two acts are from NSW! In the heart of the city – every venue is within 5 minutes’ walk of Sydney Town Hall.”

President of the Folk Federation NSW - presenting the event - Brian Jonathon said a truly urban folk festival was long overdue.
“There are scores of regional folk festivals across the country, where everyone has to ‘go bush’ for a rough (and often soggy!) experience. We thought it was time to bring the rich diversity of contemporary folk to town!”

The festival theme is ‘The next generation of folk’.
With an emphasis on youth, the performers will range from extraordinary talent, ten-year old Allegra Dunning and 2019 Young Folk Award winner Cowra’s Josh Maynard, to legends like internationally-acclaimed singer- songwriter, Eric Bogle – who will sing his much loved hits.

Relative Merits

Event Date: 10/07/2019, 08:30 pm

RELATIVE MERITS at EL ROCCO in KINGS CROSS - 10-25 July
Lambert House Enterprises and LHE Agency are thrilled to announce a ‘lightning’ return season
of the much-loved classic Australian play RELATIVE MERITS by Barry Lowe.

The one-act two-hander has had remarkable success over the years and is set to play at the newly created
EL ROCCO THEATRETTE, Kings Cross – for eight shows only July 10th-25th at 8 30pm.
Relative Merits is the story of a football hero who suddenly and mysteriously retires from the sport.
It is also the story of his homophobic brother and their difficult - but ultimately loving - relationship.

The play, set in 1993, is a historical reflection of the times but is made timely again by the current controversy
surrounding another footballer under different - but equally disturbing - circumstances.
