FIRE ON - A Prelude In Tea Event

Event Date: 25/08/2019, 02:30 pm

“FIRE’S ON” a passionate program
The Streeton Trio – Emma Jardine, Benjamin Kopp and guest cellist Chris Pidcock - return to the Independent Theatre in North Sydney this August
with “FIRE’S ON” a passionate program consisting of three of the most lyrical and expressive pieces ever written for piano trio.
It’s the latest of the Prelude in Tea series which – as always - includes a mouth-watering afternoon tea!

Arthur Streeton’s ‘Fire’s On’, painted in 1891, depicts a man being stretchered out of the Lapstone tunnel after a botched explosion.
The drama of the scene, almost overshadowed by the heroic landscape, sets the backdrop for this passionate program, featuring music of Aresnky, Babadjanian and Shostakovich.
Arensky’s scintillating and beautiful piece continues the Russian tradition of elegiac piano trios
with his four movement romantic masterpiece, inspired by the death of his friend.
Babadjanian is an Armenian composer known for making use of folk music elements in his work.
His relatively small output contains some masterpieces, including this inspired, lyrical work.

Climax of the concert is the fiery turbulence of Shostakovich’s legendary trio no.2. Shostakovich dedicated his 1944 trio to his recently deceased friend Ivan Sollertinsky and it has become one of the most popular piano trios of the entire 20th century repertoire.
“Australia’s most internationally successful piano trio,” the Streeton Trio was formed in 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland and- after spending several years in Europe - is now based in Sydney.
In 2010, the trio was selected to be a part of the prestigious European Chamber Music Academy, where it was in residence for three years.
Winner of the 2011 Music Viva Chamber Music Competition, the Streeton Trio has been laureate of several prestigious international competitions and in 2012, the trio was featured as Musica Viva’s Rising Stars ensemble.

Event Date: 23/08/2019, 07:30 pm

USU & Flying House Assembly present A DEAL
A DEAL by Zhu Yi, developed as part of "New Text - New Stage", an Ibsen International project for the development of new writing.
After its excerpt was staged at Hålogaland Teater, Norway, the play made its controversial debut off-Broadway in 2017, defying the odds to win international acclaim - and multiple awards.
Its subsequent Mandarin version was at the Jiangnan Theatre, China.

A young actress from China brands herself as an orphan and human rights victim to land a lead role on Broadway, meanwhile her parents smuggle one million dollars in cash from Shanghai to buy her an apartment in Manhattan.

A DEAL is a dark comedy that confronts the issues faced by immigrants as they seek to find their place in a new country; it confronts the clash between the values of Chinese parents and their new world offspring.
Directed by Chinese-born director Shiya Lu for her fledgling Flying House Assembly theatre company
(with support from the University of Sydney), it stars Abigail Coffey, Paul Chambers, Edric Hong, Suzanne James, Simon Lee, Katherine Nheu, Sally Williams, Susan Young and Shi-Kai Zhang. Design by Victor Kalka, sound design by Luna Y. Pan, stage manager Alex Liang, production crew Amy Sole, Simone Wang and Oliver Walton.

Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra
Berlin-based violinist Jakob Lehmann returns to Australia in August to direct the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra on the national tour of its final concert series for 2019.
This outstanding international artist leads an ensemble of specialist local and international chamber musicians through the expansive sounds and pioneering ideas of New Constellations featuring sweeping works by Mendelssohn and Brahms.

The Octet for Strings was written when Mendelssohn was just 16, and is an illustration of how the performance techniques in early-Romantic chamber music were radically transformed.
Brahms destroyed the nonet version of his Serenade, but based on archives and written accounts,
the original chamber version has been brought back to life.

Managing Carmen

Event Date: 16/08/2019, 07:30 pm

Presented by Lane Cove Theatre Company
Brent Lyall is at the top of his game and should be on top of the world: captain of the most powerful football club in Australia, he has two medals and a beautiful girlfriend on his arm; but something is holding him back from being the charismatic hero everyone expects.
Off the field, Brent hides a secret obsession ... a penchant for designer dresses and a preference for stilettos.
Brent's alter ego 'Carmen' is about to go public.
With millions at stake from endorsement deals, Brent's ruthless manager will do anything to keep his private fetish under wraps.

Following the sell-out successes of Bare and The Female of the Species, Lane Cove Theatre Company continues its hit 2019 season by bringing our greatest playwright’s hilarious satire on sport, sex and ‘the Australian way’ back to the Sydney stage.
From 16-31 August at The Performance Space @ St Aidan’s in Longueville, Isaac Downey directs
Cam Ralph, Angelica Madani, Stephen Dula, Kelsey Hunter and Alex Morgan in the award-winning play that has a whole new - more poignant - significance in this era of marriage equality, gender fluidity and transition.

Isaac says Managing Carmen is a play that leaps off the page with humour and fun, its characters farcical, vain, wise, greedy and devious.

“We’ve had a ball rehearsing it (excuse the pun!). But to say it’s only a comedy would be to diminish its intentions. This play delves into issues of femininity in a predominantly masculine world and the ignorance of its characters.
It highlights the social climate around sport and how we deal with the unknown. Expression of oneself is met with distain, ridicule and obstruction. Brett is the game’s darling but what if everyone’s idol was not whom they wanted him to be?”
