The Royal Opera House’s Live Cinema Season returns to screens across Australia with a brand-new program featuring twelve breathtaking live performances of world-class opera and ballet direct from London’s 2019/2020 season.

Audiences in Australia are never far from the action at the Royal Opera House, with select filmed live performances coming to the big screen at 20 Event Cinemas nationwide and 5 Village Cinemas in Victoria and Launceston from November 2019 to August 2020.

The 2019/20 program includes: Peter Wright’s beloved Christmas classic The Nutcracker (recorded from 2016); Ludwig van Beethoven’s uplifting masterpiece Fidelio; a glorious production of iconic classical ballet Swan Lake; and the Opera Australia co-produced Cavelleria Rusticana/Pagliacci, which combines two opera classics in a resplendent re-creation of life in a south Italian village.

This is the second screen program, winners can choose the date they would like to attend.

The Nutcracker (recorded 2016) – 23 December (Christmas themed morning tea to be served) and 24 December 2019

It is Christmas Eve and Herr Drosselmeyer the magician sweeps young Clara away on a fantasy adventure in which time is suspended, the family living-room becomes a great battlefield, and a magical journey takes them through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets. Tchaikovsky's glittering score, the gorgeous festive stage designs, and The Royal Ballet's captivating dancing bring together this glorious production of Peter Wright’s Christmas classic.

A Choral Christmas Celebration at St. Mary’s Cathedral
In two concerts on Friday 13 December, St Mary’s Cathedral will resound with exquisite Christmas music performed by the St. Mary’s Cathedral Choir and Sinfonia Australis. With choral works by Bach, Handel and Rutter, and a feast of favourite Christmas Carols, this concert is the ideal introduction to the Christmas Season.

Year after year sell-out crowds have been delighted by this traditional Christmas experience which sees the world-famous Choir, orchestra and celebrity readers offer glorious music and verse sure to fill every heart with Christmas cheer.

Celebrating its 201st anniversary this year, St Mary’s Cathedral Choir is acknowledged as the oldest musical ensemble in Australia, tracing its origins to 1818. Twenty-four boy choristers sing with twelve professional adult singers to make up Australia’s only fully- professional Cathedral Choir.

At both concerts the Choir and Orchestra will be joined by celebrities and prominent public figures who will deliver seasonal readings throughout the concert.

At 80 years old, Polidoro decides to demolish the stability of his comfortable life as a retired judge and becomes businesses partner in a strip club. These dark desires astonish his family. Beatriz, his daughter, decides to officially interdict in court, claiming that her father is loosing his mental health. Subpoenaed to testify, his son Paulo declares himself incapable to give an opinion because he hasn't been in touch with his father for years. The judge sentences both father and son to spend time with each other and then he will ask Paulo what he thinks of his father's health. In the unusual setting of the strip club, both of them will have their lives turned upside down.

Presented by Willoughby Symphony Orchestra.

Pacific Opera is a non-profit arts organisation that exists to provide training and performance opportunities to the young stars of tomorrow's opera stage, both within Australia and across the world. More than 100 of Pacific Opera's young artists throughout the years have gone on to find employment within the profession, gracing stages in Australasia, the UK, the USA and across Europe. Led by artistic director Simon Kenway, Pacific Opera's young artists enjoy an annual program of rigorous training in musical, professional and industry skills to further develop them into successful operatic artists.
