CORAM BOY - adapted for the stage by Helen Edmundson
Epic, Heart-breaking Tale of Love, Loss & Redemption
bAKEHOUSE Theatre and KXT present CORAM BOY – Nov 22 to Dec 7

“The silk on your back, the sugar in your tea, all of this - all wealth is built on the suffering of others”

From Broadway and London’s West End comes this spell-binding adaptation of Jamila Gavin’s best-selling novel – in its Australian premiere at the Kings Cross Theatre (KXT) from 22 November.

Spanning three generations, Coram Boy is at once a glorious love story and an epic thriller - a heart-breakingly beautiful tale of mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, children lost and found, betrayal and murder. And the redemption that love brings.

On the cusp of the Industrial Revolution, the wealth of England’s aristocracy is built on slavery - and children are its commodities.
Alexander and Meshak yearn for a world of beauty and music, a world they can barely touch before it is snatched away again.
Melissa and Thomas must make the best of their limited options, but friendship with the wealthy Ashbrook family may provide as many dangers as opportunities. Aaron and Toby, abandoned as babies, long to know where they came from.
All will eventually come to know the Coram Man, who takes unwanted children and saves desperate women from ruin… but what does he ask in return?

Co-Director John Harrison says: “We wanted to stage something grand in our intimate theatre, but also something that makes us take stock of how we stand as a community today.
It’s 300 years after the time of the play but child slavery is on the rise.
Coram Boy is also a great play for the end of the year –
it features events around the first public performance of Handel’s Messiah in 1742 and traditionally performed at Christmas – and I think this is a perfect time to come together to share a story that considers how we treat the most vulnerable members of our community.”

Event Date: 27/11/2019, 07:00 pm

A powerful, exclusive, two-night-only premiere performance… not to be missed!
Emanuel Synagogue Woollahra hosts an extraordinary, multi-media event by the Sydney Art Quartet in November:
CROSSROADS – featuring Steve Reich's intensely moving Different Trains – combined with a dramatic theatre & cinema installation and special guest artists.
CROSSROADS poignantly and dramatically explores human rights, the Holocaust & Survivor Syndrome
using music, human movement, archival and art footage & vocal testimony.

Crossroads features a rare performance of the Steve Reich’s Grammy Award-winning Different Trains by one of Australia’s most original music ensembles,
and will also include an oversized cinema installation by Gabriela Sá & Mariana Garcia (Brazil),
choreography by Anton Projects (Bangarra Dance Theatre) and vocals from young singing sensation, Avital Greenberg.
This breathtaking – but ultimately uplifting and life-affirming - premiere event has just two performances.

HUNTERS HILL THEATRE presents – OUR TOWN by THORNTON WILDER
A landmark in American drama, Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Our Town tells the
story of a small town, Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, in order to tell us the story of
every town, the whole world over. Narrated by the “Stage Manager”, we follow the Gibbs
and Webb families, residents of Grover’s Corners, through twelve years of life changes --
from the mundane in Act I, “Daily Life,” to the romantic in Act II, “Love and Marriage,” to the
finale in Act III, “Death and Eternity.”
Through the young lovers Emily and George, their strong and loving parents, and the many
other Grover’s Corners’ locals, Wilder delivers universal truths about what it means to be
human.
“Oh, earth,” Emily Webb exclaims towards the play’s end, “you’re too wonderful for anyone
to realize you.” With humour, wit, and exceptionally powerful storytelling, Our Town offers
a unique opportunity for audience members to make precisely that realization.
Directed by Kaye Lopez who has directed the HHT production of BRIEF ENCOUNTER, this
play is a hymn to the ordinary yet rich lives of a community.
