At 80 years old, Polidoro decides to demolish the stability of his comfortable life as a retired judge and becomes businesses partner in a strip club. These dark desires astonish his family. Beatriz, his daughter, decides to officially interdict in court, claiming that her father is loosing his mental health. Subpoenaed to testify, his son Paulo declares himself incapable to give an opinion because he hasn't been in touch with his father for years. The judge sentences both father and son to spend time with each other and then he will ask Paulo what he thinks of his father's health. In the unusual setting of the strip club, both of them will have their lives turned upside down.

The Royal Opera House’s Live Cinema Season returns to screens across Australia with a brand-new program featuring twelve breathtaking live performances of world-class opera and ballet direct from London’s 2019/2020 season.

Audiences in Australia are never far from the action at the Royal Opera House, with select filmed live performances coming to the big screen at 20 Event Cinemas nationwide and 5 Village Cinemas in Victoria and Launceston from November 2019 to August 2020.

The 2019/20 program includes: Peter Wright’s beloved Christmas classic The Nutcracker (recorded from 2016); Ludwig van Beethoven’s uplifting masterpiece Fidelio; a glorious production of iconic classical ballet Swan Lake; and the Opera Australia co-produced Cavelleria Rusticana/Pagliacci, which combines two opera classics in a resplendent re-creation of life in a south Italian village.

Royal Opera favourite Bryn Terfel heads the cast for this new production of Donizetti’s comedy of domestic drama across two generations. Join us in celebrating the Magic of Christmas.

Presented by Willoughby Symphony Orchestra.

Performers:
Pacific Opera is a non-profit arts organisation that exists to provide training and performance opportunities to the young stars of tomorrow's opera stage, both within Australia and across the world. More than 100 of Pacific Opera's young artists throughout the years have gone on to find employment within the profession, gracing stages in Australasia, the UK, the USA and across Europe. Led by artistic director Simon Kenway, Pacific Opera's young artists enjoy an annual program of rigorous training in musical, professional and industry skills to further develop them into successful operatic artists.

This powerful and seductive program, bursting with sumptuous and rousing works, includes the passion, longing and grace of Bizet’s L’Arlesienne Suite and the pure elegance of Kuhlau’s Concerto for two French Horns.

And what tale of love is complete without a telling of the world’s most famous star-cross’d lovers?
In the spectacular setting of St Columbus Church, Woollahra, Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet Suite will share
all the light that breaks from yonder (stained-glass) window in the timeless tale of their romantic, passionate - but tragically short - lives.

The Woollahra Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes conductor Thomas Tsai to direct this final program for the 2019 season and - with great pride and delight - also features its own outstanding French Horn players, Laurie Liskowski and Cindy Sims in this unusual double concerto.

From Broadway and London’s West End comes this spell-binding adaptation of Jamila Gavin’s best-selling novel – in its Australian premiere at the Kings Cross Theatre (KXT) from 22 November.

Spanning three generations, Coram Boy is at once a glorious love story and an epic thriller - a heart-breakingly beautiful tale of mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, children lost and found, betrayal and murder. And the redemption that love brings.

On the cusp of the Industrial Revolution, the wealth of England’s aristocracy is built on slavery - and children are its commodities.
Alexander and Meshak yearn for a world of beauty and music, a world they can barely touch before it is snatched away again.
Melissa and Thomas must make the best of their limited options, but friendship with the wealthy Ashbrook family may provide as many dangers as opportunities. Aaron and Toby, abandoned as babies, long to know where they came from.
All will eventually come to know the Coram Man, who takes unwanted children and saves desperate women from ruin… but what does he ask in return?

Co-Director John Harrison says: “We wanted to stage something grand in our intimate theatre, but also something that makes us take stock of how we stand as a community today.
It’s 300 years after the time of the play but child slavery is on the rise.
Coram Boy is also a great play for the end of the year –
it features events around the first public performance of Handel’s Messiah in 1742 and traditionally performed at Christmas – and I think this is a perfect time to come together to share a story that considers how we treat the most vulnerable members of our community.”
