Bel A Cappella Ancient Lands

Event Date: 08/05/2022, 03:00 pm

A concert of contemporary a cappella choral music from Australia and around the world
In ANCIENT LANDS Bel a cappella perform Einojuhani Rautavaara's Missa a cappella, undoubtedly one of Rautavaara’s finest works, alongside Australian composers Kate Moore - Eclipsed Vision and Joseph Twist - Hymn of Ancient Lands.

Also in the concert are works by composers including Ešenvalds (featuring Josh Hill on Marimba), Gesualdo, Whitacre, plus Alice Chance’s setting of Revd Lenore Parker’s prayer God of Holy Dreaming. Many of these works were performed by Bel just a few weeks ago in the Bowral Autumn Music Festival to great acclaim.

The Song Company presents the latest 'Underground' concert tour
THE SONG COMPANY continues its grand tour of European Polyphony with Antoine Brumel's 12-part "Earthquake" Mass The second in The Song Company's 2022 Underground series is the first program presented solely by the dozen SongCo Apprentices, who are recreating the incredible ‘Earthquake’ Mass of Antoine Brumel by learning it from the original choirbook notation written out for a Bavarian performance in the 1570s, led by none other than Lassus.

Singing from the manuscript has been a consistent focus of The Song Company's explorations of early vocal music in recent years and it is now the turn of a new generation of singers to learn these long-lost skills.

The Missa Et ecce terre motus stands at one end of Renaissance polyphony in terms of its 12-part harmonic landscape – which is slow-moving and highly-decorated in the individual singers’ melodic lines around the foundational plainchant.
The final pages of the manuscript are lost to the ravages of time, so in their place it seems appropriate to sing a 12-part homage to Brumel’s Mass from the Missa Tempore Paschali by Nicolas Gombert – himself believed to be a pupil of Josquin.
Reverberating in-between the movements of Brumel’s masterpiece are modern works for six to twelve voices by Alice Chance and Antony Pitts on the themes of loss and resurrection.

ATYP and Shopfront Arts Co-op join forces once again to premiere The Lies We Were Told
"You don't stop laughing because you grow older. You grow older because you stop laughing." Maurice Chevalier-
We grow up being lied to. Often for good reasons - so we can believe in something magical, to believe we can be whoever we want to be, or to shield us from pain. This is about those moments. When a lie is revealed and the truth is learnt and in that moment something is discovered, something that will change you forever, something that cannot be unlearnt. From global conspiracies to childhood memories to the most personal moments of all. This is how we grow up. This is life!

Following their critically acclaimed partnership on 2017's Dignity of Risk, ATYP and Shopfront Arts Co-op join forces once again to premiere The Lies We Were Told. An ensemble of young people aged 8-18 will share personal stories and verbatim texts, investigating the moments when it felt like you grew up in one day, or one hour, or one minute and nothing would ever be the same again.
