The Screwtape - Sydney

Event Date: 22/11/2016, 07:30 pm

C.S. Lewis’ wildly comic yet deadly serious masterpiece – The Screwtape Letters - is coming
After a sell-out preview season last year, Clock & Spiel Productions are bringing The Screwtape Letters back
to Sydney (from Nov 22-10 Dec), Melbourne (13-17 Dec) and Canberra (from 19-23 Dec).

One of the most popular works of C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia, The Space Trilogy), this brilliantly funny literary masterpiece – in a special new adaptation for the stage - provides a humorously accurate insight into the frailties of human nature.

The Screwtape Letters follows the correspondence between a senior demon, Screwtape, and his nephew, a junior tempter named Wormwood – whose task it is to secure the damnation of a young man known as “The Patient”.

CS Lewis was a friend and colleague of JRR Tolkien – both taught in the English Department of Oxford University – and he was, like the author of Lord of the Rings, deeply immersed in his Christian faith.
The Screwtape Letters has universal contemporary appeal as a satirical exploration of evil and temptation.

Directed and adapted by Hailey McQueen, The Screwtape Letters is masterfully performed by Yannick Lawry (Australia: The Story of Us) as Screwtape, while George Zhao (The Family Law) injects a physical comedy element like no other, in his portrayal of Screwtape’s assistant – Toadpipe.

The Jungle Book

Event Date: 18/11/2016, 07:30 pm

IRRESISTIBLE CLASSIC TALE COMES TO LIFE AS MUSICAL The Jungle Book with youth cast
The Jungle Book – Rudyard Kipling’s enthralling tale of the child raised by animals
– comes to Sydney’s North in irresistible musical form from November 18.

Following up its earlier 2016 season hits, Away and The Last Five Years, Lane Cove Theatre Company presents
Kipling's unforgettable tale that has enthralled and delighted young audiences for generations.

Mowgli, the 'wolf-cub child’ and friends Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther and Kaa the python,
transport us to the jungle in a story that has remained a favourite amongst adults and children alike..

Can Mowgli discover the secret of man's red flower? Can he fight off the terrifying tiger, Shere Khan as he awaits his chance to pounce?
Will he be able to overcome the many dangers of the jungle and live there happily?
Or will he leave his wild friends and join the humans in the village?

Faithful to Rudyard Kipling's original beloved story, this beautiful stage adaptation will enchant adults and children alike.
The production evokes the mystery and majesty of the jungle while awakening the wisdom and magic of Kipling's powerful and enchanting tale.

Directed by 18-year-old Bedelia Lowrencev, The Jungle Book features a cast of brilliantly talented – mostly young -
performers (all but four of the 22-strong cast are under the age of 18!) including wonderful newcomer Charlotte Pugh as Mowgli,
Madeleine Biddle as Bagheera, Daniel Timmins as Kaa and Holly Boswell as Shere Khan
as well as seasoned actors Rod Stewart as Baloo, Jeremy Lowrencev as Akela and Jocelyn Chalmers as Raksha.

Lowrencev says The Jungle Book is a real crowd pleaser and ‘the very definition of family fun’!
“You’ll laugh and cry with Mowgli and her friends as they explore the trials and tribulations of growing up, l
earning about the importance of friends, standing up to bullies; really the bare necessities of life!”

Join us for our annual celebration of Spring at Breenhold!
The annual Breenhold Gardens SpringFest is back in 2016, bigger and better than ever. Join us for a day of sun, spring, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Led by the inimitable Roger Benedict, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows will host two, intimate, one-hour concerts, deftly capturing the sounds of spring in their performances. Biber, Brahms, Mozart, and even Lennon and McCartney will provide the perfect “sound-track” for taking in the breathtaking setting that is Breenhold Gardens.

Founded in the mid-1960s by the late Sydney ballet and theatre critic and political journalist-turned-businessman, Thomas Essington Breen Snr, and his wife Charlotte ‘Bill’ Breen,

Breenhold Gardens comprises thousands of exotic and indigenous trees and flowering shrubs. This one-of-a-kind landscape, which more recently provided the backdrop for Baz Luhrmann’s movie, The Great Gatsby, is the perfect union of a Northern Hemisphere-style garden estate and the untamed Australian bush.

There’s plenty to enjoy at Breenhold Gardens SpringFest – whether you’re a classical music aficionado, a green thumb, or a young family, SpringFest is the ultimate Sunday adventure. Let's Talk About You

Event Date: 16/11/2016, 08:00 pm

LET'S TALK ABOUT YOU by Rivka Hartman
Two of Australia’s favourite veteran actors, ANNE TENNEY and ELAINE HUDSON, embody one high-powered character, the two-faced Ernestine, in AFI and GOLD AWGIE award winner Rivka Hartman’s new play LET’S TALK ABOUT YOU, a black comic love story about and between women. A character piece with a fast-moving storyline, LET’S TALK ABOUT YOU takes a witty and penetrating look at love and friendship – what makes it work, and what makes it fall ridiculously apart. Sexually charged, emotionally raw, the play sparkles with humour and insight.

Summer Rain

Event Date: 16/11/2016, 07:30 pm

A light-hearted yet bittersweet story.
Christmas Eve, 1945. Harold Slocum, proprietor of Slocum’s Travelling Family Tent Show, has a love of the horses, an intimate relationship with bookies and no money to pay his troupe.

After the performers walk out, the Slocum family finds itself in the drought-blighted NSW outback town of Turnaround Creek. Deciding to put on a show, they muster the enthusiasm of the townsfolk, despite the hostility shown by local publican Barry Doyle, who remembers the last time Harold was in town, 16 years previously.

Then the drought breaks and the Slocums are stranded. Over nine days of rain, dormant memories of an illicit affair resurface and emotions run high, new life is breathed into the town, love blossoms and a feeling of rejuvenation and optimism for the future after the long years of war, beings to take hold.

Nick Enright and Terence Clarke’s charming musical celebrates the vaudeville troupes which travelled outback Australia in the 1930s and 40s and the tight-knit rural communities they entertained.

A light-hearted yet bittersweet story, delightful songs and lively dance numbers makes Summer Rain is the perfect way to end the year.
