Short And Sweet Semi Finals

Event Date: 21/10/2022, 07:30 pm

Win a double pass to the Semi Final in Sydney
I highly recommend this having judged one of the heats.

The celebratory 20th year of “the biggest little theatre festival in the world” concludes with 4 four performances over three days and nights at the Tom Mann Theatre in Surry Hills.

The Judges’ Semi on Friday night 21 October 7.30pm features eight great plays all under 10 minutes long.
The People’s Choice (audience vote) Semi is Saturday 22 October at 2pm with another eight pieces.
Then the best winning four from each are showcased for audience and industry judges on Saturday night 22 Oct at 7.30pm.
It all climaxes then on Sunday afternoon 23 October at 2pm when the finalists will give their final ‘encore’ performance,
followed immediately by the presentation of awards and prizes in multiple categories.

Among the highlights of finals week are Kate Jirelle’s moving piece To Those I Left Behind - portraying three teachers farewelling their students.
Based on verbatim words and experiences of teachers past and present, we feel their frustrations, passions and sadness.
Jirelle co-stars with Annette van Roden and Trish Youlden.

Flat Meat Society by Tom Coash (US) stars Brooke Ryan (directed by Emma Carolina-Wolf)
as a West Virginia woman on the way to fame and fortune cooking a very unconventional cuisine…

All’s Will That Ends Will is Barry Wood’s hilarious three-hander set in a psychologist’s office.
A man can only converse in Shakespeare quotes which drives his partner mad; will the therapist help or loose her mind?
Lachlan McWilliam directs Erica Nelson, Abbie Love and James Pattison… “Brevity is the soul of wit…”

Multi-award-winning short play by local writer Adam Szudrich Rosa & Leo is a powerful love story of separation and reunion that overcomes war and unspeakable horrors. Grant Wilson directs Olga Tamara and Richard Cotter.

Nicole Smith’s Oh Nanna! Is a hilarious romp through retirement and privilege as a family secret paints Nanna in an entirely new light!

The Briefing

Event Date: 20/10/2022, 09:30 pm

Quick Tix open to all Melbourne Members
Melissa McGlensey is tackling the dumpster fire of news from the USA in the only way she knows how – through comedy.
You’re invited to be part of the press pack at The Briefing – a send-up of right-wing politics that takes
aim at the USA, only to catch Australia in its crosshairs as well.
Behind the podium, McGlensey transforms into right-wing blowhard Sarah Sanders, taking you on a journey of political theatre, partisan nonsense and dark humour, before giving you the right of reply in an improvised Q&A session that promises to yield more laughs than actual answers. You’ve never experienced a presser like this before. Don't forget to bring your questions!
The Briefing is directed by Alasdair Tremblay-Birchall, a stand up and sketch comedy performer ('Magma', 'Teleport') who writes jokes for TV like Shaun Micallef's Mad as Hell and co-hosts the podcast, Two In The
Think Tank.
The Briefing is written and performed by Melissa McGlensey, a writer (The Onion, Reductress, The Betoota Advocate) and improviser/comedian (Completely Improvised Survivor, The Big HooHaa!, Soothplayers) originally from the USA. As an expat and former journalist, McGlensey offers a unique perspective on the important political moment we are living in.

Detox

Event Date: 22/10/2022, 07:45 pm

When does striving for wellness turn into illness …
After being dumped, Genie embarks on a fitness challenge to improve her health. This quest pushes her to be faced with dodgy diets, quacky influencers and swamp juice. The lines between healthy and unhealthy begin to blur. In order to save herself, Genie must uncover the true meaning of health, and cut ties with a toxic friend.

This absurd, dramatic comedy explores the effects of diet and influencer culture on young people. Detox helps viewers understand the beginnings of eating disorders and how diet and influencer culture allow these illnesses to flourish undetected. Audiences will laugh, cry and sing along!

Formerly Bourke & Heather, Minerva Theatre Co. are passionate about talking about uncomfy things through comedy. Premiering at the 2022 Anywhere Festival, Detox was critically acclaimed – many audience members urged Minerva to spread Detox’s message far and wide. Described as “an effective takedown of diet culture” (Theatre Haus, 2022), Detox has been extended and adapted to be relatable to all genders.

Written by: Sophie Heather, Tish Bourke & Anonymous Respondents.
Directed By: Macarra Berthaly-Martyn
Starring: Tyra Pohlman, Téa Gross, Sophie Heather, Lachie Mackie
Featuring: Freya Crema, Amy Callaghan, Trudie Cross, Ashlee McCreanor, Chiang Faye Marvin
